I'm actually in the process of building a castle atm. It's nothing too special, 3 layers and working on a dungeon/portal room. One of my main recommendations is if you are making it large make sure it is properly lit with torches or whatever you decide to use as light. If you don't do this the game (haha you lost the game) will consider your castle to be a cave and will spawn all sorts of nasties

Hello there.
For a couple of days now I have been thinking on building a castle.
I already could develop some ideas on paper, and started to build something as a prelude, or as a prototype to be more accurate. That way I believe I will be able to test out my ideas, which are plently, but probably in vain :smile.gif:
Like outer castle walls, adorned with towers. I have designed several towers on paper; from small to large. Finally, I decided in a large one, which is 15 blocks in diamater (outer), has a one-block wide full wall (which means no diagonal placement. so in order to move to next diagonal square, you use three stones instead of two..like

it is very difficult to share such ideas in here though, maybe after actually building them it will be easier to do.
So considering I wanted such a tower, which needed 56 blocks per unit height and was designed to be 26 block high would require serious cobblestone. I thought. Then I designed a five block wide castle wall and saw a stupid amount of required cobblestone. (I hate using any form of cheat, console command or editor, no matter how large a thing I want to build. Every single block in a creation I make will have to be mined, or otherwise gathered or crafted by me with very natural ways... probably that will be the reason I won't be able to build anything, but if I do... it will be magnificant.)
Here are some ideas in quick succession.
-Five block wide castle walls, hallow inside, filled with lava. When intruders try to break your wall, they will be burned by lava. If you are unable to find that much lava, you can instead use water to push your intruders away... more humanitation... you will get a medal.. yeah..
-Five block wide castle wall; because on the upper walkway, you don't want to fall down. Considering you will make the outer wall like
[] [] [] [] [] []
you will already have a four block width available. If you do the same thing to inner side, so that your archers can keep fighting relatively safely if by some miracle your enemies fill into inner yard, you will have three block wide space to move around. That is barely enough.
-instead of the standard castle wall design given up, I would advice a more practical approach like
[] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
The reason is simple... you dont want anyone alone in a war. In a most basic form, everyone shall fight with a buddy. so your castle wall will be guarded by archer teams of TWO at the very least. If you make only one block extensions like the first example, only one of them willl be able take cover, and not a very safe cover at that. And given the fact that you can push anything a little bit by walking towards it, it is quite possible your archers will be pushing eachother out of protection in the middle of war, when enemy archers begin shooting...
(by the way, I keep talking like an actual battle will someday happen in minecraft... It's my right to dream on, right? maybe capture the flag, one day, and you wlil want to protect your flag... yeah... I will be laughing when the day comes... because I will be prepared... and you will be prepared too, if you take my wise advices... teh he hee... teh heheh hehehe ahem.. yeah... right..)
-For design, there are tons of historical castles out there you can copy. But one important thing is WHERE you choose to build you castle. You can make use of a very nice mountain in "U" shape to make use of as natural walls on three sides of your castle... and thus you will be able to mine the required material faster... but do not forget; natural walls will not be as protective as your walls... well, maybe they will be thicker, but you will not be able to make use of them in any way other than that... YET; if you work hard and clever, you can fill the mountains and their insides with creative, devilish, deadly, bizzare traps. Or make other tactical uses of these mountains. (such places are very good for hiding tnt barrels)
-Chests, filled with required things, in various places of the castle.
In towers and on castle walls, you will be doing archery works (until it's too late) so place some chests there and fill them with arrows, spare bows, some cooked steak. One idea I have in mind is the "eggbaskets and a great omelet welcome tactic." What? It sounds funny? wait until you hear it!
Enemies are running towards your castle walls, ready to stick their dirty ladders on them, or mine through them. and your archers, instead of shooting arrows, start by dropping literally hundreds of eggs down below. Just "q spam" in turns. Which, your enemies will gather, even if they dont want to!
Still funny?
You will be laughing when their inventory is full and they have hard time looting, swapping items, or crafting en route.
-By the way, it might become a commong tactic to have "ladder guys" which carry lots of ladders in their quickbars, run to your wall and begin sticking them as they climb up. So please do something like this
(side view of your wall)
this way, they will at least have to stop for breaking the outward stones before going on, giving you time. You can also extend this idea to place traps over the... extensions... like
They won't see the lava... until they break the cobblestone... teh heh heeee.. TEHH HEHEHEHEHEHH! ahem..
By the way, here is the wall with lava, side view
Urgent got to go situation! I will keep rambling on later... Maybe...
Thanks anymore!!!
