So, here's my mines. The yellow X blocks are Brightstone (made to look like cobblestone torches or glowing cobblestone)
I made sure to light up any spots only allowing the light to down down to level 12 (I think, since it's 15 inside brightstone, 14 on each face, then 13 and 12 away from the face.) I'll try it out later.
Well we have the old spawning system back until Notch can work a better way around difficulty levels
Well, that kinda sucks. I was just in the middle of recording a video tutorial demonstrating why the new spawn system blows chunks. All that hard work for nuthin'...
On the other hand...HURRAH! The mines are safe again!!! [happy dance]

If you want monsters to stop getting on your lawn you should:
Light up your lawn with torches. No more than 6 blocks in between each torch.
Fence off your front lawn with fences. Add a break here and there so you can pass through.
Maybe add some defenses if you're not picky about aesthetics. Things like cacti and moats.
A more fun solution for me on my first map was to build your base on the side of a mountain overlooking a forest in all directions. Then set the forest on fire. Everlasting fires as far as the eye can see and no mobs can spawn. Even if they could, they wouldnt be able to reach me on my cliff face.
