I have a fully functional house, windows, doors, etc.
I don't much care for seeing ANY monster outside my window if I have my property lit up so as to prevent spawning.
If I wanted to be confined to my house, or rather if I wanted to ensure wandering around my property was as hazardous as possible, I wouldn't have lit the place up.
I don't think you understand, a large surrounding area is also lit up, and as I've mentioned in the past, it was FAR more effective, this has been changed, it blows goats.
Simply put.
NO MONSTERS ON MY PROPERTY.
NONE.
There is no reason whatsoever why I shouldn't be able to demarcate certain areas as "no spawn" zones.
If I can get minecraft to run I'll take some screenshots, but honestly, if you have to have torches every three blocks or so just to prevent a monster from spawning above ground, that's ****ing stupid.
I don't want to play in peaceful mode.
I simply want to have control over where I do and do NOT want monsters to spawn.
My surrounding property should not look like some kind of lamp post farm just to stop a few monsters.
Without some kind of diagram of how your torches are laid out, I don't know if I feel sorry for you.
I'm working on a huge area that I want to be monster-free while I build, and I've had to face many challenges to pull it off. First, it was a matter of establishing a torch grid leaving no space dark enough for a monster to spawn (I believe if a square is no farther than 7 spaces from any torch, it is bright enough. Then, I had to deal with monsters that spawn outside my torch grid and come wandering in. Right now the solution is I dug a trench around the perimeter 3 blocks wide and deep; it's a good foundation for the walls I'm building later. After doing this, I never saw any monsters encroach on my worksite. It turns out monsters *really* like to wander, so anything that could be an entrance to your safe area is a liability. (Example of monsters' wanderlust: I've got a grassy floor near the entrance to a mineshaft. Chickens routinely wander down to the bedrock level of my mine.)
Interiors are a little different. I had a 29x29 space to light and didn't want to use a torch grid or lava floor for aesthetic reasons. Turns out the best choice I had was to use half-steps for the floor; monsters don't spawn on that and I valued sticking to my floorplan more than having the exact floor I wanted.
So I feel like it's possible that your interior isn't lit as well as you think, and monsters wander a little farther than you might have expected. You need to account for both of these if you want a monster-free zone. I'm not sure what you're looking for if you don't want Peaceful and you don't want monsters; the notion of using some magic "no monsters here" spell seems quite silly.
I assure you that a torch every 7 blocks is sufficient to scare away monsters; I've never seen one spawn in my worksite save for the brief time when my castle courtyard wasn't lit properly.
Its a bug.
Its happening with me too.
My cave is lighted up, and its still spawning a lot of mobs, i'm dying a lot, lost all my stuff because there is a bug where you lose everything when you die (really lose, you cant get it back).
After around 6 deaths i quited, i hope it get fixed, otherwise i can't really see fun anymore, beucase i can't even get materials back to craft another good weapons.
The last picture is not sufficient lighting at all, not even before the update. You have dark areas very close by, and if a monster spawns there, they WILL come after you.
As for the underground pictures, how deep are you? Looks sufficient for before the update, but now the deeper you go, more light is needed to prevent spawns.
Nobody else has complained about this "problem" so far; therefore, you must be the one doing something wrong.

No, most people are willing to just put up with it. and those "dark spaces" toward the right of the image is over a cliff, they're not getting over that.
Regardless, the overall frequency of monsters spawning has gone up, not to mention the fact that they intentionally wander into lit areas which I assure you they didn't before.
It was one thing to lure one into an area such as that, but I'm encountering them without them even seeing me.
And yes, I can distinctly recall three months ago it being a perfectly acceptable level of lighting to prevent monsters from appearing.
Youre such a god damned crier. Put more torches down or deal with it.

man even before the update I didnt' even let shadows get that dark.
+1 to both
It's not like torches are hard to make. You don't even need lanterns yet.

This statement is completely incorrect.
However, I do agree with you that the change has generally affected things a bit too much. There's a certain level of aesthetics in this game where if you need too many torches, it's just annoying to even look at what you've built.
It's not like torches are hard to make. You don't even need lanterns yet.
Obviously he had those torches there before and monsters didn't spawn or show up so frequently. ANd on top of all, at surface level. That is surely annoying. I'm not in the mood to turn my house into a Christmas tree, thank you.

I was trying to think of a signature and this is what came up.

If that's truly the case (which I doubt), he got lucky until now.
But I haven't heard anyone else mention this issue, none whatsoever. There's quite a few issues with this update (surprise, surprise) but until someone else reports this problem, this isn't one of them.

It does, in general - sort of prevent them from spawning just anywhere.
Here's the alarming part. I found two dungeons very near each other and had 'deactivated them, with not two, but 4 torches around the mob spawner in each dungeon.
Today, the torches are still in place, but the mobs are spawning anyway. I came very close to being spider bait.
Outside of the dungeons, I had a few more nasties spawn than usual, in relatively light conditions. So I'm going to venture to say that torches no longer deactivate spawners, and it is pretty likely that the level of light intensity for mobs to spawn near you is higher than it was before today.
(Meaning caves must be brighter to be safe)
I'm not sure how much is part of the Halloween update.
I've started carrying fences with me, so I can turn my back, after blocking off access to my work area.
Youre such a god damned crier. Put more torches down or deal with it.
Are you joking?
Why don't I put them down on every square, I suppose you have no problem with something being that ineffably queer but it seems ridiculously excessive.
Even a moderate amount of light used to discourage monsters from wandering toward it, it clearly doesn't now.
I would like to develop properties that don't involve a ludicrous amount of torches, not because they're a rare commodity, but because it looks absolutely retarded putting them down in that quantity.
And you're crying about me supposedly "crying" about Notch fagging up the game.
It was suggested to me to put up light sources in order to prevent monsters from spawning.
I did, and it worked.
It doesn't -work- anymore.
Or rather it's far less effective, and that makes things extremely annoying.
Honestly, to preserve the enjoyment of the game there should be certain environmental variables that are under the direct control of the player.
First and foremost should be the ability to determine (by placing lights) where monsters are not allowed to spawn.
If I wanted them to spawn somewhere, I'd leave that area dark.
I DON'T want creepers showing up at my front door even though I've gotten my whole property lit up like times ****ing square.
Furthermore, I believe this should extend as well into underground areas.
How are you supposed to build an subterranean dwelling if you can't ensure monsters won't spawn and start ruining everything?
With the exception of being unable to allocate the resources to do so, it should be the players choice where and when they encounter monsters.
This is not fun, this is annoying.
Change it.
Furthermore, make glass by burning sand in a furnace. Windows. Let's you see if there is a creeper waiting outside your door.
Just because your property is lit up doesn't mean that the outside, beyond the light, is going to be safe.
Post some pics if you want more information.
