I like the new changes so far. I know some folks seem irritated by the increased mob spawning. I think what it has done is add alot of functionality to things that were "somewhat" useless before. Now It is important to consider such things as installing walls, doors, fences, traps, pits, workarounds when exploring areas you intend to occupy (mine, fortify, etc) The more need for construction and fortifications the better (for me) it motivates me to new heights of creativity with the game. I never go out looking for mobs to fight... only fight them when I must in a sort of "survival horror" style of play... I welcome the opportunity to be suprised in my areas by the occasional wandering zombie. (I kinda underlit some areas intentionally actually... just for the occasional scare). However, I can see how trying to do a massive build and getting it hosed by creepers constantly would be irritating. I think the various modes of play available to those who want to 'lego' and those who want 'construction based survival horror' styles already address the issues of mobs spawning...
I think Notch said in the minecraft.net/boo page that the lower you are, the more torches you need to be safe. At bedrock level I think you'd need a torch in every tile xD.. or 1 torch every 2 blocks or so..
--edit
And yes.. on some saves the thing is just screwed up and mobs show up on totally lit rooms like
---
Even then, in the worlds that it is not screwed up, monster spawning is just a li'l bit more agressive. Well.. not little.. it's a bit more agressive. Not unplayable, though. Well.. not unplayable in that way. It's sluggishly slow now (8-15fps)
While the OP is childish as all hell, he sorta has a point. This is at bedrock with torches every 5 blocks (4 squares between each torch):
Those enemies spawned, they didn't migrate in.
Are those redstone torches? They are way too dim to prevent spawns (light output =7, vs. torch = 15).

While OP is far from level-headed, and really has no place bitching so angrily about changes to a game that he knowingly paid for while in ALPHA, he has a point. My caverns and mines that I've excavated and lit, which have had NO instance of spawning prior to now, are now totally infested with mobs. I understand the "survival" aspect, but what attracted me to this game was the feeling that I could create a safe haven in the wilderness. This seems impossible now. I don't want to line every single tunnel I dig with torches. That's not fun at all. I not only have to make way more torches than I should need to, but I need to frequently interrupt my progress to stop and transform my cavern into what looks like a torch factory.
I like mobs, don't get me wrong. If there are no baddies, there's no reason to build safe structures and this game becomes pointless to me. I don't like being kicked in the balls every time I turn around because I didn't meticulously count squares (really, I don't even know what I'm counting to) while lining my tunnel with torches. It's not fun to load up a save and find it all but unplayable because you didn't prepare for something that was impossible to prepare for. It's not fun to be told that all your work is no longer usable.
I appreciate Notch updating the game but, beyond that, I expect it. This is his job. He's made, literally, millions doing this. I'd be bummed if he just decided this was the way it's going to be, leaving a bunch of people out in the dark. And it's going to be a lot of people if all the ***** threads are any indication. I feel like half of these bugs could have been found in ten minutes of actually playing the game. That's just lazy.

Cry me a river, then an ocean. Like you so presisely siad, the game is still in alfa, witch you knew when you bought it. Allso there have been said a few times now----> Dont get to in love with your saves, because they can get corrupted or what not.
I've seen creepers spawn on the surface under trees during the day (relatively sparse trees too) very close to the spawn zone, this was before first nightfall.
With armor not working, items being lost completely on death, and the out of whack mob spawning play on peaceful or don't play until the next patch sorts things out.

It seems you have been afflicted by the same problem as many others in this thread-- you have forgotten how to read. Alternately, you could just be unassailably stupid, which is a possibility that I will not rule out as yet. I fully understand that the game is in Alpha. That does not make my opinions about changes invalid. On the contrary, it makes them all the more valid, seeing as how alpha testers pave the way for beta testers who make sure the game is ready to launch. That said, alpha testers do not normally pay to alpha test a product. It is considered a service to the developer. I have paid $15 for this game and so have a vested interest in it not being something that I don't like playing.
It would seem that you and most like-minded individuals cannot see beyond their own noses and so are not sensitive to people who don't play exactly like they do. If you like the idea of lining every other block of your tunnel with torches, that's great. You can do that. I don't want to be forced to. I'm not "in love" with my saves. I like my save and it's a shame to see it unplayable. Fortunately, this being my favorite save, I have a copy of it which I will not access until either these problems have been rectified in some way or there is a method of downgrading to the previous version of the game. The problem is that this will happen in any new game, it seems, as well. The new mechanic for spawns is not conducive for my having fun with this game. Spamming torches is not fun. I can't imagine how much "fun" I'll have once the burn out mechanic is implemented.
yeah i feel bad for bashing you a lil bit and said that i would adapt...which i did my fortifications work well but if you look at this picture you can see that mob spawn rate has gotten a lil crazy check this out might be hard to see sorry but look at the amount of creepers its crazy lol
I don't know why you are telling us this, I know I certainly don't give a ****.
Anyway you are obviously doing something wrong, and if not (Unlikely) - gen a new world - it might be something to do with the Halloween update applying to an old world.
If THAT doesn't work (Now we are getting into the realm of absurd) delete your minecraft.jar and all other minecraft related files and redownload it, because I know mine is working pretty much as it always has.
Oh yeah, fyi - YOU SEEM TO BE ACTING LIKE A **** - RECTIFY THIS.
Guess what?
That works both ways.
I don't know why you, UberaDpmn , are telling us this, I know I certainly don't give a ****.
You may want to read the other posts in this thread and possibly stay out of it if you are unable to communicate as a civilized person. Did anyone force you to reply to this thread? Did anyone force you to read this thread?
This is meant to be communication between people that have experienced similar and would like to inform the developers of this change and see if it is how it was planned or if its simply another bug.
Guys, don't be rude; read the rules of the forum.
That said, this annoys me too.
I'm not crying or anything, but it is a bit of a pain when I peep over the edge of my walls just to be served 20 arrows for breakfast.
If you really wish to avoid mobs, construct aerial walkways between bases, light with torches every 3 or so meters. Make sure that your rooms have a sufficient number of torches, if unsure, err on the side of caution. Placing a torch on every block is unessecary, but you can still have a large number of torches and keep the room asthetically pleasing. Make use of non-spawn blocks (glass, half-blocks, etc), and construct your base in such a way as to prevent anything entering. (Useful trick, Mobs don't seem to A: Swim underwater, and B: Be able to fight against currents very well. Thus, hiding your doorway behind a waterfall is often an excellent solution, and looks neat to boot.)
If you wish to make use of shadow for design/atomosphere purposes, either ensure that shadowed tiles do not have their tops exposed (Eg, A large hall, 27x19x20, torches placed 3 meters off the ground around the edges of the room. For bonus points, make the room larger and create gigantic iron and diamond staligtites hanging out of the dark above.), or ensure the tiles are the non-spawners.
If you really get irritated by mobs, play on Peaceful. Thats what it's there for. I cannot understand why anyone wish to play other difficulties without mobs; do you want to die from magma and falling, but nothing else? Seems kinda... well, odd. I could possibly understand if you wanted a more realistic minecraft experiance, but then, real life doesn't involve punching trees down... often. >.> Choosing areas for mobs to spawn defeats the purpose of the mobs, turning them into simple mob-trap fuel.
Finally, recall that all mobs are quite easy to defeat, even on hard. The only time you are at any risk is when they surprise you, and if you're in a dark area, and NOT checking behind you at least every 3 seconds, you're doing something wrong. If you are not in a perfectly flat plain with no cover, then assume unsafe by default, lighted or no.
If mobs are spawning in fully (one torch on every block) lit areas, then something is probably going wrong. But as of yet, I am yet to have any issues with mobs being where they shouldn't, apart from some minor scares in the deepest (and most terribly lit) bits of the map.
What a bunch of whiners. You guys are lucky he even made light matter. In any other game it wouldn't matter if it was day night or purple. Stuff still spawns in and you have to deal with it. This game is about survival. That means monsters. And its only going to get harder. Soon your torches will go out and you will have to build lanterns, you going to cry some more? Play on peaceful if you don't like the game how its intended to be. If it still bothers you, play classic. And if that bothers you, play something else.
Notch isn't making a game for you. He is making a game for himself and allowing you to play it. If you don't like what he does, tough.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Certainly don't look like redstone torches from here, and I'm sure that he would know that.

You're stupid. I have the exact same problem- I had three creepers and a skeleton in my walled-off area that was normally safe.
I literally had to put it on Easy because if it was on Hard Mode, I would be gone in a matter of seconds.
