I never use peaceful. I'd say that peaceful is fine if you feel you hate the monster aspect, but I wouldn't say that accomplishments are exactly worth as much as if you played on another difficulty...
I like the idea of building stuff that you have to earn. Because of this, I play with peaceful on. This is mainly because I had a bad experience MANY TiMES and I just don't to explore the caves when I know there are monsters. Gives you a scare.
Of course, it is survival, but I like to be more creative and build a nice system to play around with. Self-efficient. Currently making a cactus farm... because I can.
Having worked in development environments before ...
... you might want to consider that Peaceful is a necessary option during development, so Notch can test various elements of the game/environment without having to deal with spawning monsters. On the project/product I worked on, we routinely had things switched off in development mode, so we could see what we were working on both from a user viewpoint, but in terms of internal logging/messaging.
Also consider that just about everything in Minecraft has a purpose or planned purpose. Peaceful is also a great option for younger children - a point-and-click game where they can engage their imaginations without being chased by monsters.
In the final version, I'd be open to being able to start on Peaceful and switch to any higher difficulty level, but if you start at a higher level, bumping all the way down to Peaceful affects scoring or some other element of play.
Ultimately, if the mode bothers you, don't play at that level. Nobody's forcing you to do it.
For me peaceful is just a tool. I use it when I don't want to be harassed by monsters, because I'm building something, exploring a really really scary cave or for some other reason. I don't think I've ever really used peaceful to save my behind from death when I was facing insurmountable odds, that would kind of feel like cheating to me personally, but I couldn't care less if somebody else wants to do it. I don't really care if using peaceful will affect your score or whatnot later on either, I just hope that you will still be able to use it and switch between difficulties when you want to.

How can it be cheating if there are no rules? It is only cheating in your head. It's not like we are playing the same game together (multiplayer).
There is a culture on these forums that peaceful or INVedit or whatever is cheating. But it only exists in those peoples heads.
I play on normal, I like the challenge of mobs but my views don't make normal "truth".
What he said. The only cheating that counts is stealing the game from a torrent-type site. Once you pay, you play the way you have fun with it. It's your dime, and it's just a game (an incredibly fun game, but still a game).
I <3 how everyone says how bad-ass they are. "YEAH, I PLAY ON HARDCORE NORMAL MODE ALL THE TIME, BECAUSE I'M REAL EPIC WITH A SWORD." And yet it's a tie between "Just don't play it..." and "I <3 peaceful!!"
I'm going to admit it. I play on peaceful, most of the time. I do it so if i'm building something creative or decent looking for my first night, I won't be bombarded with arrows.
You know what else?
Sometimes i don't even turn it off. i just keep building. Because.. guess what.. I paid for this game, and i can play it however i want to, really.
If you don't like peaceful, don't complain about it and say how pro you are for playing on Normal mode.
Maybe you enjoy it, some people don't. Right now it looks like the majority doesn't.
Mine craft survival has Peaceful mode for those who just started the game, and for those that are experienced builders, but want to actually -do- something for they're build materials.
Jesus Christ on a high horse, you need a set of rules before you are able to cheat. Hacking your inventory or changing the difficulty in SP is not cheating, since Minecraft have no rules. Anyone who disagrees should reconsider their values in life.
On MP, however, the server administrator should be able to change the difficulty for the whole server, which will most likely be implemented before too long.
But on smp when pvp is put out then peaceful will kinda be cheating because of heart Regen...
Except you can't change difficulty in multiplayer mode. Notch could easily make it so that only the owner of the server can change the entire server's difficulty. Not the players.
That would give players the ability to grief by flicking from normal to peaceful constantly.
I use peaceful when mining, it's to effing scary down there.
When I'm on the surface, I turn it onto normal.
If I have valuable things with me and I'm about to die, quick pause and put it on peaceful.
Same here in regards to being underground. Trying to keep my bearings and locate ore is tricky enough without having to spend extra time clearing out mobs. (Although sometimes I want the extra challenge... just depends on my mood.) As for being near death, in those cases I just live with the risk of dying because, 95% of the time, I probably did something unwise that put me in that predicament in the first place. LOL I usually carry some emergency food for those moments and hope that it's enough to get me by until I can get to safety and restock.
I also sometimes turn on Peaceful mode if I'm working on a building project where I need to be outdoors and don't want to stop during the nighttime. Any other time, I play on "Normal".
However, if you don't play on peaceful, and you build great stuff / survive for a long time / etc. you sure get some bragging rights!
Also, those who fight monsters seem to know a lot of tricks, and I for one appreciate reading about them.
This.
People like to post their constructions and all on the forums, which is great.
But to me, if said construction is done on normal/hard, yeah, it can be impressive.
If it was made on peaceful (even just temporarily), then I've already lost interest and am not impressed.

Survival ? challenge ?
What? You seem to play some other game than me.
After 2 minutes in the game you can have place which is secure from any mob.
I play on hard and still most of my respawns are caused by splattering from an miscalculation at edging.
The last time a mob killed me, was after i fell from an structure and landed on its head.
me: Damn ! Missed the edge - gonna die. again.
dozen feet later:
me: Oh, cool, still one heart :smile.gif:!
SSSSsssssssssssa-BOOOM !!
me: ...... Oo
game: < Ya wanna respawn and look for your scattered parts?>.
I never ever met mobs in my mine thanks the overkill of light given by torches and
those in caves fall everytime for the allmighty "wait at the edge and hit them with stick"-tactic.
The most challenging moment in the game thus far was after i found a vein of diamonds
half submerged in lava. < fun.
This again is partially just difference of opinion, as well as player differences.
Some people are going to find games like this to be easier than others might find it. I tend to say this about fighting games; gimme GG or BB or Tekken, and I generally dont have to try very hard (in high level play mind you) in order to pull off a win. And I play alot of shmups, particularly danmaku types. Alot of people cant handle those at all, but I can. However, give me something like a competetive team FPS, and I'm more likely to blow myself up than help the team out any; I'm totally worthless in a team situation and I have NO sense of tactics, at least as far as that genre goes. Or Starcraft 2.... I like the game, but BOY do I have a long way to go, and Im having more trouble learning it than many players do.
It also has to do with how kind/not kind the game's random generator is being. If you enter a wide, dark cavern that's got 5 skellies, 4 spiders, 3 creepers (which are the closest to you), 6 zombies, and those are only the ones THAT HAVE NOTICED YOU (and thus are close... more in the back of the cavern!), and they just.... keep.... coming.... how easy do you think this is going to be? Particularly when you suddenly find out that 300 accurately fired arrows isnt enough? This is what happened in my game when I found my 2nd major cave system. SO many monsters. So. Very. Many. I think I took screenshots of them (but they're not uploaded right now, and I dont care enough to re-post them; I only took them to show to a friend). There were no dungeons down there; just a trazillion monsters. And the further I went into the cave (which turned out to be huge) the more there were.
Obviously if you're strip-mining, yeah, you're not gonna find monsters. but I dont do that at all; always spelunking for me.
And finally, my current map is a mountainous mess. There tend to be monsters everywhere at night, and it's SO easy for them to get dangerously close to me due to the screwball terrain.
(and I'm on Hard, mind you).
Some people just dont seem to get quite so many monsters spawning at once. While some get hordes of the things. The game can be a little strange about this, I think.
ALL THIS BEING SAID, I'll say one more thing: I personally dont really give a rat's ass wether anyone plays on peaceful or not. I think it's a good idea for Notch to have put it in there. But AT THE SAME TIME I completely dont see the point of it, and would not have bought the game if it didnt include monsters/danger. That's just me though. I'm the type that, when I get a new game, instantly puts the difficulty up to however high it can possibly go, and refuses to drop it any lower for any concievable reason.
Others have their own style, and that's great. Whatever. I dont care. At all.
Heck, I'm only getting this ranty now due to having too much energy; dont take it as me being angered or something, cause I'm not.
It's like a whole different game. I don't really like playing with monster's because I have a pretty bad fear of spiders, so playing peaceful makes the game more fun for me. (although I still fear theres something out there)
If you enjoy playing peaceful, play peaceful. If you enjoy playing hard, play hard. that's how i see it.
Simply because of the ease of building. Until now, I have built everything on normal, including my semi-expansive castle, as well as mined on normal. But now I'm building a HUGE tower, and my progress has been severely hampered by spiders, skeletons, and the occasional Creeper setback. When I'm finished I'll go back to Normal and continue on from there, including building many future projects on Normal.

So... I was building my HUGE dickbridge across the universe, when I stopped to get some more wood.
