Portals are rather... unreliable. I journeyed miles from my base, built a portal to the Nether, and spawned in the portal that links back to my home.
And I have to say that, even if Notch decides to fix this to make the Netherworld more useful as a means of fast travel, the way it is now makes a lot of sense and sort of awesome -- like you're trying to use black, evil magic that can't be tamed and wants to screw with you.
I did something like this... but i fixed it, sorta.
I made my first portal, then i was messing with the nether and pouring water into the lava at the bottom. i accidentally fell once, falling down into lava, somehow managing to swim back up... then saved by my water! i swam back up my huge waterfall, and it took a looooong time (stupid water fall...)
A while later... oops, fell again... but instead i became lazy and made a portal down there hoping to just jump back to my world. HA what a joke. I spawned randomly in some cave. when i dug out, i was encountered with a huge cliff... so i climbed up there, not to see my lava tower at my home anywhere around.
So i went back INTO the portal. realized "wow, i have ladders....." and climbed up back to the first portal and went into that one and was back to my normal home.
BUT, here's my tip to you, if you'd like to try it... if you can make it back to one of your old portals in the Nether, re-connect it and go through it. it might work... good luck

Don't take me wrong, I like the concept. Just not with portals. These ought to be predictable and simple to use or the Nether will officially go down as the most aggravating dimension in gaming history -- which wouldn't be so bad if not for the fact it is also largely useless at the present moment.

I was trying to think of a signature and this is what came up.

Indeed. It's not fulfilling the fast transportation purpose at the moment. Hellstone and lightstone are nice, but hellstone is extremely easy to get and you can't really do much with lightstone that you can't with a torch; plus it's very time-consuming to get decent amounts of it.
I figured out where the right position for my counter-portal was and cobbled over the lava lake enough to build a Portal back to the correct spot. With that done, I won't have any problems with unpredictable Portals anymore, because I know where the core spot is. All I need to do now is to turn a big chunk of that lava lake into land, so that I got a BIG part of the real world that will be perfectly portalable.
My first portal bring me right to nice big land with cave scenery, I build it a bit below sea level anyway. When I go back to main world, it return me properly. But after some time I realize it actually create another portal in real world 4 chunks from it. I destroy it and nothing seems to change.
Recently Im taking my nether minetrack to the furthest side of it and put a portal 30 blocks above lava lake (any lava level?), it bring me properly to somewhere far far away. I hasnt try to walk back to the portal, I hope it doesnt put me to some strange lands.
The distance factor is 1:8. Since the counter-Real.Portal of the wrong Nether.Portal is usually built nearly exactly in the right chunk, it's quite easy to figure out the approximate distance you must go to secure a proper spot for the right NP location. So why not just do that, secure a decent area of 10x10 around that spot, then see if you can get it to work properly this time? Much better than wait for silly linked Portals that will make you lose all orientation in the Nether.
For best results, for now, I'd recommend only building portals in the Nether (once you've accessed it, of course); they seem to reliably make new portals in the normal world (and not cross-link oddly like building more portals inthe normal world does).
And I have to say that, even if Notch decides to fix this to make the Netherworld more useful as a means of fast travel, the way it is now makes a lot of sense and sort of awesome -- like you're trying to use black, evil magic that can't be tamed and wants to screw with you.

I can't count how many times I've gone with this method...
