So, i don't know what's wrong with my underground tree farm.
This is after about 10 days.
I planted them all at the same time and that one tree that has grown only took i think around 4 days.
None of the others seem to be growing, is this due to something with my lighting or what? Probably something simple i am missing or not thinking of but someone may know.

It could be where you are for the majority of the time. The first tree is always the fastest (obvious statement is obvious). But if you're too far, much like mobs, the game won't process the growth. I'm currently growing a massive amount of trees, luckily almost done but I've had them growing for easily 2 weeks in game.
I'm not a minecraft botanist... but from what I know... trees grow very fickle-ly... I once had a patch of 4 trees that didn't grow for a VERY long time, then all sprouted at once.
Since the one tree grew, you know that the height requirement is met... they don't need water... there's plenty of light. Just gotta leave it up to fate I guess?
I am not at all sure about this, but I think trees "like" to have a few empty tiles next to them. One torch per tree is already plenty enough light for them to grow; maybe try removing a few and see if that works any better.
The only other thing I can think of is to make the ceiling a little higher. Trees vary in height, so maybe you're keeping anything but the shortest from growing.
You have to plant trees on grass blocks, not just regular dirt blocks.
Actually, dirt works just fine.
Your trees seem to be too close. If I recall, trees need to have a 5x5x5 area to grow in, centered on themselves. you have 5x5x5 areas that are overlapping, which won't work, I think.
I've never made an underground tree farm though, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

i dont think its their proximity to each other either, i plant trees in a checkered pattern and have had clumps of ten right up all over each other. I really think its the height, but maybe they just need more time, i know that the ones underneath my mess always take longer to grow than the first ones to pop up.
have a look at my vid to see how well they grow all over each other: although its not underground, the ones underneath other trees always come up last, but it seems to make those ones grow REALLY tall, almost as if they grow up and over the ones above them, which makes me think they might want more height.

From the looks of your screenshot, your ceiling height is 5 blocks. A tree WILL grow with a 4 block high ceiling, but will take longer than usual. Make your ceiling 6 blocks high (as far as you can reach while standing on the ground) and your trees will grow faster.
You need about 2 or 3 blocks of free space on the same level of the sapling cleared. So move all those torches lto like the sides, or make the walls out of lightstone for light. It's the torches preventing it from growing.
actually, trees dont need any area around them to grow, they require only 4 blocks above the block the sapling occupies to grow, this has been proven by extensive testing by multiple parties, you only need vertical area to grow the trees, the rest is just due to how much time you give the trees, can be 1 MC day, could be 30, you just never know with some of the wierder things weve found in MC, but really all you need is 4 open blocks above your sapling and the tree will grow, even in a 1x1 pit, as longa as it has vertical room, of course no one has proven they grow faster with/without the horizontal area around them, so its always best to be sure, but always have open room above your trees

its not. i used to grow my tree farms like this:
where = sappling
and they grew very well. then i found out that we dont need so many torches for them to grow, ive since stopped using so many, but they never stopped them from growing. I always had a hard time getting the torches out after all the tree had grown lol.
All is fine with the OP trees. irongeist post may have nailed it. However, I noticed some issues with trees when building the maze you see on that post. And this much I can tell you: Some saplings took me 3 days of real-time to sprout into a tree. Your 10 days however seems excessive. At that point I would probably just replant the sapling, assuming a bug stopped their internal counter.

I was trying to think of a signature and this is what came up.
Just for the record. Trees grow fine when crowded. It just takes longer and with stuff beside them they want to be tall trees. I had to clear branches above to get the last few to fill in. (Yes the treehouse is lame.)
That took many many game days of being in the general area. (I mostly spent it chopping down small trees and replanting until they grew as huge ones.)

I'd guess that there's not enough space above for yours to grow.
In my tree farms I have the trees planted on a block of soil ABOVE the level of the torches, like this:
[sapling]
[torch] [torch]
The sapling should be centered above the soil in the second line, of course. The idea, however, is that it's one level above the torches, thereby giving it at least three empty spaces in every direction. I know trees don't require space around them to grow but it seems to encourage growth.

I'd expand the ceiling for when they do grow. The solution is to wait; I have a tree farm almost exactly like this and just before I posted a thread like this they started sprouting like mad. Just me, though.
you can grow tree's in tubes...the ceiling is too low is what i think is wrong IMO to me in my findings it seems the tree randomly picks what its gonna look like when its big and if there isnt room for what it picked it will stay a sapling...all those trees want to be taller then what your ceiling is allowing if those saplings wanna be big tree's your gonna have to make the ceiling way higher
trees will merge with other trees as long as there is no wood over the top of where the new sapling is placed i dont have any problems getting trees to merge above ground with open sky so i would guess its the ceiling
only other thing i could think of is a lighting problem ive never grown trees underground i must admit but i would think it takes longer with only torch light as a source
this is a person that had trouble growing trees inside a closed area and he took the roof out and his trees turned into big branching ones....i bet the rest of his trees did too...if they decide to be big and theres no room they wont grow...replant saplings until you get small ones is also an option

Mein kraft!
not true at all
i would try raising the ceiling maybe one block or two if you can? I can see that one tree has grown with that height, buts its probably not optimal.

My trees have a 3x3x7 space and they grow well.
Also if torches were preventing the growth the first one wouldn't of grown :s
