I think creepers should just make noise in daylight, or something. I sure do love dying when I go to collect wood and one sneaks up behind me while I'm chopping!
That said, it does make the game have a bit of a fun-random factor.

Problem is, there is nothing to threaten you at all during the day if you nerf the creepers. I prefer the way they are, at least until we get more mobs.
