I was just mining through a cave I found and realized I do an odd thing - whenever I find a lava pit, I dig out the walls around it.
This originated from my first encounter with a lava pit in the bottom of a cave. I needed to get around it - meaning digging a walkway around it. Half way through, guess what I found.
So, Minecraftians, what are YOUR mining quirks?
****Also, don't dish out facts about how the game was programmed and how what other people do is incorrect. This would just ruin the whole thing****
When I find lava, I try to dig through it. Make a tunnel. Mine the obsidian. Or, just mine it all out.
I also sometimes and randomly fill in holes left by veins of ore. And everything has to be neat. 8 torches, 7 spaces apart each for each tunnel. (before Halloween Update, now I don't play that.)
I also Mine out the walls around lava pools and lakes, usually by 2 or 3 blocks. It looks nice, and is a bit safer than treading right beside lava.
I also always mine down in a stairstep format. I've never done 2x1 shafts or anything else - just a long staircase to bedrock. I start branching at different levels from there.

I love the smell of burning zombies in the morning.
When digging out an area underground for future building projects (or a strip mine if i did one of those), i mine out the perimiter i want, then continually go around shaving off a side with each pass. Its literally the only way i can stand to mine out large underground areas, id probably kill myself otherwise.

There was a man who feared not the reaper
He dug in the earth ever deeper
Diamonds of his
Were lost, with a hiss
There is a man who now fears the creeper
I'm picky about my mine design, because I feel like I'm underground more than what I'm above. Which could be because of the increasing amount of mobs swarming the surrounding area.
Mostly though, as said above everything has to be smooth stone. I hate having dirt, or gravel dotting the mine walls. To me it looks tacky, and messy. But I've seen some mines with a mixture and it looks fine.

always use stone picks. dont like 2 waste my steel. and always fill/block off already explored areas to save torches and preavent getting lost/confused.
The entrance to my first mine is my first home (ALWAYS, unless I build into the sky).
Because of early lava incidents (all accidents), I don't move at all while mining anything, unless it's a tunnel or I HAVE to move to finish mining.
I mine out almost every non-stone, dirt, or gravel thing I find, with the occasional exception of coal, which I generally collect at a later date. Having dug out an ore patch, I will fill it in COMPLETELY with cobblestone, leaving no gaps. If I find lava, I will dig a walkway on both sides of it. All cave and room ceilings must be at least 3 blocks high, and caves must have level floors. No block may be "unsupported", that is, no structure can proceed for more than about 5 blocks without a support leading to the ground, with the exception of some railways and aerial walkways which look as though they would remain aloft with fewer supports. I place torches at least every 5th or 4th square, and up to every 2nd square, even before the deeper-is-more-dangerous mechanic came in. And finally, no blocks can EVER be connected by an edge; they absolutly must have another block inserted to keep them touched via sides.
I do, what I think is called branch mining. Always. I dig (almost) strait down till I hit admin bricks, then branch out, then those branches are branched off of, until i hit lava on all sides, then I go up a floor.

This.
I wonder if remote-controlled Notches will go on sale after christmas...
I place torches at exact intervals even in irregular caves.
I mine every bit of subterranean dirt I see in case there's another cave behind it.
I have a tendency to label everything with signs.
If I shave dirt off a hill, I smooth it out again by removing more from that row.
If I see a mountain, I climb it. I drop everything I'm doing just to crest the top and place a torch there.
I make super-tall (20-30 block) dirt or wood towers in open areas as a form of navigation, topped with torches.
If I see redstone ore, I leave it unless I'm low on dust. Redstone ore is pretty :biggrin.gif:
I do all of these things too. I also make sure to pour water on every lava lake I find to turn them into obsidian. I also tend to save all my dirt, and use it to patch up natural/artificial land scars.
And, I hate your sig. D: I thought a bug was on my screen!

I do the same thing. Every one of my underground "buildings" I use smooth stone to patch up all the dirt walls and such. Mines are different though.
I also used to dig out all the dirt I found when deep underground because I believed it led to a cave. I don't do that anymore.
I also always mine down in a stairstep format. I've never done 2x1 shafts or anything else - just a long staircase to bedrock. I start branching at different levels from there.

i never leave lava alone
i fill ore gaps
i mine every bit of every resource i see (except coal)
when im working on my 1/2 mile long tunnel (srs) i never use my iron pickaxe, but rather 3 disposable wood ones i make before each session
So basically I mine all dirt or gravel I see and replace it with stone because that's how it should be, dammit.

So you mine every chunk of stone you see?
