After spending *hours* of time (and still not finished) on my project, trying to refine, remake, restyle the setup of the storage cart facility so that it becomes flawless whilst efficient and beautiful, I've become dissatisfied with our possibilities outside of lame-o autocart modding.
It is common knowledge, at least I hope it is by now, that in order to increase a minecart's speed you use a booster, another cart on a track beside the minecart that speeds along with Cart A till a certain point where Cart B stops and Cart A continues on at a fast pace.
The issue with these over a larger period of time when you, say, want to have a cart waiting in a booster loop and then with the switch of a lever have it zip off to destination, is that most boosters are prone to glitching right up.
So I made a world and tested all the different boosters, my results will be reported momentarily.
tl;dr: Nerdrage on boosters, gimme something better.
First, the boosters that I know of, look, setup, pros and cons.
Number one, the non-resetting booster. I did a mock up of one, thus the weird spinning circles at the end, it emulates a massive track going in one side out the other and then eventually coming back around for some reason, great for going one way then back the same way. Cons: Prone to glitching, the booster cart every 5-10 minutes will bounce off the wall it is supposed to stop at and get stuck in the middle, when the cart comes in next it will not boost. Resulting in manual reset.
Number two, I think everyone's seen this terrible model by now. A 3x3 square with an 8 piece track in it with 5 carts merged into one another resulting in max speed for an infinitely long amount of time. My model has another track around it, the cart goes in, gets boosted and goes out the other side controlled by a switch. Or stays in the loop till the switch is flicked.
Issues with this is it doesn't support more than a few seconds of waiting, the carts will either a) stop moving entirely, :cool.gif: glitch back and forth in split seconds of the two tracks just sitting there flashing, or lastly c) the carts will randomly hop onto the other track.
One of my favorites, the sloping booster, great for areas that you're cramped for space, top side only requires a 3x3 square. Pros: very small and efficient gives max power infinitely, easy track transferring at top OR bottom of the booster, in the course of my 45 minutes I had the world running didn't glitch once. Cons: more effort to make, if you cover it up and it glitches is a pain to fix.
Fourthly is the resetting booster, used on one way tracks where no cart will EVER go back that way. If you wish to send a cart back that way it will NOT work. Pros: It's a booster, I am not at all fond of this style. Cons: Quite often glitches, carts stop moving midway through the track, I've even had them fly off randomly once or twice, takes up far too much space. A pain to use to transfer carts to different tracks and back.
And lastly, the momentum booster. Starting to become rather fond of this but having issues with switching the cart being boosted off of the track, if anyone can offer assistance/world saves/screen shots of how to use this to store a minecart and then call on the minecart at a later time to zip it along and then send it back and still have the booster work, please do tell.
Lots of text, eh? So my question comes down to this: in your experiences, fellow Minecrafters, what is your best booster, do you know of different setups, tweaks for the ones I've shown, advice etc?
The project of mine I was referring to, for anyone interested, can be seen here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=62977 I would gladly welcome any advice, suggestions or comments on that thread as well.

From OP: "I've become dissatisfied with our possibilities outside of lame-o autocart modding."
I don't delete my Physics. That's just not right to me. In a (Minecraft) world without physics, leaves are diamond ores and the trunks, diamond blocks. No sir, I shall not get autocart.
i prefer the last one, the way to make it call with switch is kinda tricky though
should look kinda like this (gold is ramp, silver is track, glass is where it switches)
i put a line to seperate the two in the example
[] [] [] [] (loop back to gold here)

actually, that diagram fails, i shall try to make something like it myself with screenshot

It looks smart - but it's late and I don't understand, would it be too much of a pain to ask if you could maybe throw down a test world and make that plus an actual thing that it would switch off to and post save/screenies? It looks interesting and if I can have working momentum boosters it will make my day :tongue.gif:
I have to agree with those insisting on minecart. Sorry, I understand that's not what you want to hear. But neither boosters were something Notch wanted to code in. If he considers that a feature now is because players found it fun.
But I don't try to find excuses. Autocart is cheating, but you bet I will damn cheat by installing it. Carts in Minecraft are stupid. Without boosters they would be even more stupid. Autocart is what carts should have been from day 0 and boosters are just an annoyance (exactly as you have been experiencing).

I find the challenge exciting, what would Alpha Survival be without challenges?
Autocart is not what minecarts should have been from day one, they're not subways. They just need to be more realistic is all.
As for the Booster shown by Dark One, I thought that was an old booster that was fixed, and could only be hacked in these days?
I may be confused.
you can use AutoCart, which basically removes friction for minecarts allowing them to slide at max speed as long as something doesn't stop them from going forward.

I didn't explain myself well. The game game was pre-alpha and is now Alpha. Notch introduced the basic of minecarts. And that part of the code is there as we can see it. He should have then made minecarts behave in a similar manner to Autocart, while he completes the code and eventually finishes it. Without Autocart or without boosters (a bug, remember) minecarts would be used by no one today.
And boosters, for all they represent are also a source of annoyance. Both because they are hard to hide under many circumstances, but also because they glitch badly.

That booster type is just what I was looking for in the momentum booster - how to be able to switch it off, also your roller coaster is MASSIVE! Nice work, I'll definitely be favoriting the page for future reference.
Boosters never glitch out if you make sure neither cart is in a loop... if there's any loop - like in each of the first 4 examples in the OP's post - they will glitch eventually.
I know I'm not a great MC idea guy, so I hope other people come up with some new booster ideas. But I don't see where the automatic "autocart!!!1!!" mentality is coming from... If you don't want to build then why play at all?

Thank you HerrJoeBob for understanding my issue with Autocart, lol.
But yeah that's just the thing, I NEED my carts to loop.
If you look at my other thread (link in OP) then you'll see why. Unless you know of another way to do that?
Open to suggestions =]

Oh sure, that's no problem. You don't need your carts to loop, you just need them at maximum speed when they escape. Just set up a non-reset booster that rocks your travel cart back and forth, and let the travel cart escape when someone calls it.
Here's my save that shows one way. This world overall is sloppy and unfinished, but in this case you're standing at the solution to your problem. The cart goes back and forth forever without generating infinite momentum (i.e., glitching). You can adapt the pressure plate that allows the cart to escape into your call mechanism.
I use the boosters in KonigTX's video. That said, I like this () video better - it explains a lot about minecart behavior.
The glitching is caused by momentum buildup - if a cart hits a booster over and over again without ever stopping it will keep accumulating momentum until it becomes too much for the game and it glitches. The video shows how to "hold" a cart in a glitch-less booster and launch it via redstone.

the one turn section should be powered by redstone to make the cart go where you want when you press a switch
Mein kraft!
Basically a minecart will automatically jump onto a sloped track so:
[] [] [] [] []
[] [] [] [] []
[] [] [] []
[] [] [] :Iron:<-------Cart goes this way
The cart will snap onto the taller track giving it more momentum, boosting it along.
I'll try to find that thread that explains it better...

I've had this world running for over 15 hours, and have never had them glitch out in any way at all. I highly recommend using this booster design.
Don't worry about watching all 8 minutes, the good stuff that you wanna see is all packed right into the beginning of the video.
Lemme know what you think.

Agree, Autocart is how Mine carts should work in this game by default.
I will never play without it again, Boosters are awful.
