thought i'd share some of the things that i've figured out though the course of getting lost repeatedly in my own mines and killed by whatever decided to come after me in the dark... didn't see anything like this when i searched... maybe it can help someone out
things to bring with you every time you go underground...
at least one full set of torches and sticks... maybe two sets of sticks depending on how long you want to be down... seems like common sense but i've had to go back to the top of my mine several times because i ran out of both... which sucks when you have a 30x30 strip mine that goes down to adminium... it's not good when you get lost in the dark
a workbench... you can always make more picks and shovels... but only if you have something to make them with and on
a few dozen ingots of iron... maybe not that much but at least enough to make three or four iron picks... only use them to mine redstone gold and diamonds... stone is plentiful undergound... use it for everything else
possibly a furnace... if you run out of ingots and you don't want to stop exploring your mine it helps to be able to render more from the ore you'll undoubtedly find
coal... goes without saying... can't run a furnace or make more torches without it... plus you'll find plenty more while you're down there
a bucket of water... keep one with you at all times if you're deep underground... it saves you the trouble of building a bridge over lava or trying to go around it... let it pour over lava and make obsidian... instant walkway... huge time saver
signs... lots of signs or stuff to make signs... if you turn a corner drop a sign to point the way back... keeps you from running in circles trying to find your way out
random tips...
if you find an underground pocket of earth or gravel clear it out... if you don't have a shovel use your hands... takes just as long clearing dirt with your hands as clearing stone with a stone pick... every time i've cleared a pocket i've found something useful... gravel gives you flint for arrow heads and firestarters... the stone surrounding it will almost always have coal which you can never have too much of... if you're deep you may find more... i usually come across iron on any level... deep pockets tend to have redstone... i've found gold and diamonds in quite a few... it's worth a look... plus they could lead into a new cave
listen for water... running water underground usually means a sizable cave with exposed ore... plenty to mine and new caves help to break the monotony of digging mazes of tunnels
listen for mob noises and ominous music to find dungeons... doesn't really work for me... only found one close to the surface under my house... but i keep trying... i want those treasure chests dammit
if you run out of signs carve arrows in the walls... then on the way out you have something pointing you in the right direction... be sure to put a torch in them or refill with cobblestone so you can make them out easily
make use of the extra space in your inventory... the crafting space next to your avatar is perfect for carrying things that you don't want to accidentally drop... i keep a workbench planks ingots and any diamonds i find in them... frees up four more spaces to carry something you might really need later
if you're traveling away from your house to mine leave a good trail back... i build fire pits so i can find my way if i'm out in the dark... way better than torches... build a 3x3 box out anything but wood and put a log in the center... two layer if you're in a winter level and you build on ice... spark it with a firestarter and you won't get lost... easy to spot from a distance at night and can still be seen during the day... i go until they just start to fade when i look back and build another one... that way there's a clear line of sight all the way home... and they light a decent sized area so no baddies can spawn right around them... if your quick you won't be in the dark for long
if you're worried about zombies or what have you outside your house at night make some murder holes... dig out a few spots along your outer walls a block down from the floor... clear a block in the wall along the ground so you can see their feet... they can't see you to attack but you can still hit them... just make sure you only make a one block hole... if it's two blocks wide spiders can get through
hope this stuff helps somebody... i'm sure there's some noobs out there that might find it useful

I like some of these tips. Although, you don't have to end every sentence with a "..." :biggrin.gif:
I disagree about taking down a workbench+furnace though. Sure, I think it would make the things I do underground EASIER, but where's the fun in that? I keep my workbench and furnace up on the surface in my house.
The things i always take down:
One full stack of torches.
8 Stone Picks.
1 Diamond Pick.
6 Shovels.
Iron Sword.
The shovels are for if you get into a tight spot and also to dig out gravel+dirt. That being said, I mine by simply taking my cart to the back of my mine, mining across three blocks and then mining back towards my main shaft so there's not much danger in that.
Good list though.

i usually go to the strip mine i dug a few islands over from my house... if i do take a furnace i usually leave it outside on the bottom with a chest that i keep extra picks and planks in... i take the work bench because when i mine i don't have a set pattern... i just go... even with the signs i still get turned around sometimes so i keep it with me just in case... i don't normally take shovels with me but i have the bench so i can make one if i'm in a tight spot... i have one diamond pick but i only use it for the little obsidian farm i have in my courtyard... i generally use diamonds for swords... everything else is stone or iron... i haven't made a cart yet... i mine until my inventory is full of ore then i go back to my house and fill my chests... it keeps me from staying in the mines all the time... if i had carts and a mine base i'd never leave them... i do enjoy me some digging... and going all the way back with a full inventory give me an excuse to add on to my house
the ellipses are just a bad habit... plus they're slightly annoying... and i strive to be just slightly annoying to see who's paying attention... you both were so you each get a special prize... i'm going to give you my entire factory... with all of my oompa loompas... to share of course... there's only one... what... do you think i'm made of factories

16+ (Usually 64, I grow alot of trees outside my front door)
32+
10+
16+
64+
64+
5 Pickaxe
1 or Pickaxe (Unless it's my first mine of the map)
5 Shovels
1 Bucket of Water
1 , , or Sword
and one or two cooked pork.
I use the logs to make planks, Which I use to make a workbench at the bottom of every major staircase instead of taking up an entire inventory slot. I use the workbench to create two chests of the planks, a furnace, and to restock on any low levels of tools. I smelt new ores with the furnace (Duh), after I place the furnace and chests by the workbench. Soil is for scaffolding as I mine, Stone is for tools. I waste diamond on a pickaxe, because to me, it lasts so much longer than an iron pickaxe it's worth it. Using it only on ore, I tend to find enough diamond for armor before on it breaks.
The only thing I would suggest to change in your strategy would be to remove the furnace and workbench, and replace it with 16-64 :log:, because 64 wood is enough to make 4 stacks of planks, which means:
1 = 4 = 8 OR 16 = 64 = 128 OR 64 = 256 = 512
Simply put, you don't have to come up near as often.
I try to use redstone as a breadcrumb trail. It's plentiful, easy to see, and stacks - which signs do not. I have a small workspace at the bottom of major staircases/just outside major mining areas and run back to drop off ore when I get that "time to save" spider sense tingle. The instinct has served me well over the years. Almost without fail I die within 5 minutes if I ignore it!
Nice post, thanks for sharing.
PS - I will find you and hurt you if you don't stop using the ellipses. I say that from a place of love.

that's actually a really good idea... but i still think i'd get lost... i get lost going from my front door to the mailbox sometimes... i try not to save unless i'm at my house... if i saved underground it would take me an hour just to figure out where i am... i've got so many mines interconnected that i'm still not sure where i'll pop out of the ground when i do reach an opening
and since you took notice of the ellipses too you get a prize... i've already given away my factory... but you get all the chocolate you could ever eat... unless you're diabetic... then i'll give you all the carob you could ever eat... and i'll take you for one ride in my glass elevator... just don't wear cleats... it could break... then we'd fall and die... that's not a good thing

Excellent post Coatney... I wish that some youtube "lets play minecraft" noobs would read this... they do so much ridiculous stuff... like try to close doors with a full bucket of lava when they're on the surface... (badfatstorymode) and try to block in a skeleton mob spawner with cobblestone and no torches... (spartankiller) or just plain dig straight down with a full inventory of diamond tools... even I knew never to do that when I started...

Here's another tip for stocking up for long trips: inventory efficiency.
One log = 4 planks = 8 sticks. So if you're planning to carry around a lot of wood, one stack of logs would take the place of 4 stacks of planks / 8 stacks of sticks, saving you 3 or 7 inventory slots. When I'm in lumberjack mode, I keep all the wood as raw logs until I need them.
If you take along a crafting table, you can do the same for tools and bread. Instead of filling inventory slots with a half-dozen each of picks / shovels / axes / bread (which don't stack), bring along the raw materials (which do stack).
You can store items in your inventory's four-block crafting area if space gets really tight.
I just brings:
64
64
32 for quick patching stuffs and easy to destroy again
32 for precaution if somehow I only found few coals
64 [>>-i>]
1 sword
1 pickaxe
8 pickaxes so I don't have to build them for awhile
1
3
One compass
I don't bring buckets since I don't want to lose 3-6 irons. If I locate a dungeon, I close it, mark it, then go back up to take lava bucket. Water bucket if I want to turn it into farm.
I wouldn't advise carrying anything valuable in those 4 crafting spaces. When you die, whatever that was in them disappears. At least everytime I've died, whatever was in them was not there when I came back.

that's true but if you die you lose whatever you have in your inventory anyway... i really only use them because i occasionally miss the w key and hit q... it just seems a bit easier for me to have the things that i really don't want to drop up there... i fill my inventory with ores and head back to my house to drop them off... i do my best not to die... it's not quite as much fun as not dying... though it does happen on occasion... but i always take a few of those bastards with me

I don't think I'll be putting anything in there honestly, because if I drop it I have chance of getting it back. Most of the time it's quite a large chance. If I put it in there, it's deleted upon death..

that's cool... it's not like you really have to it's just something i do... i'm just a bit paranoid i guess... i was walking up to an obsidian edge over a pool of lava and accidentally hit q with a diamond in my hand... the first diamond i found... noob mistake i know... but one i don't intend to repeat... especially since i don't have one cave or tunnel that doesn't have at least one huge pool of lava in it... i like using the natural light... saves on torches... though i'm fairly certain that it will be my downfall on several more occasions

I've yet to try the lava way.. Seems more of a pain to me, I also don't have a lot of lava.
Trying to make that GIANT mob trap that gets like 11k items an hour and I spent 3 days exploring a cave for lava, it went to bedrock and still no lava x.x lol OR diamond :[

lol seems like when you look you never find what you want... i've given up on looking for diamonds... i just get really happy when i stumble across them... every time i found lava i was really looking for dungeons... follow the sounds break a block and run like hell when orange stuff starts pouring out lol... tends to happen about 10 or 15 blocks above bedrock... though i have found the rare lava waterfall way up near the surface... literally back to back with a regular waterfall... and yet no obsidian... i'd like to build a mob trap... if i can ever find a damn dungeon... seems it would be a little bit easier than hunting every night... i want to kill hundreds... possibly thousands... millions... that might be a little genocidal... what the hell... i want to kill millions of the little bastards... and steal their stuff

lol seems like when you look you never find what you want... i've given up on looking for diamonds... i just get really happy when i stumble across them... every time i found lava i was really looking for dungeons... follow the sounds break a block and run like hell when orange stuff starts pouring out lol... tends to happen about 10 or 15 blocks above bedrock... though i have found the rare lava waterfall way up near the surface... literally back to back with a regular waterfall... and yet no obsidian... i'd like to build a mob trap... if i can ever find a damn dungeon... seems it would be a little bit easier than hunting every night... i want to kill hundreds... possibly thousands... millions... that might be a little genocidal... what the hell... i want to kill millions of the little bastards... and steal their stuff
