i was exploring VERY deep and i jst got lost in all my finds i was COMPLETELY lost so i jst said **** it, i knew which direction i came from so i decided to dig STRIGHT UP, well i was doin that and i got pretty high, then all of a sudden my screen got kinda pixelated with this green thing and i kept taking health. is it a glitch?

No, its gravel or sand. Suffocating you to death.

Yeah that's like the golden rule in Minecraft, never dig above, never dig below

Always dig staircases if you need to dig up, cause yes, sand and gravel will kill you.

It does work you need only one square (your head) to not take damage. And the sand/gravel must fall from some where leaving at least one square. If this does not work for some reason (which it will) then just look up and dig one square then jump.
