Why are you guys so viral about this? If you want to cut Notch a break don't complain. The correct mode of fan love isn't to viscously go ballistic on those disappointed on the progress.
I've taken part in quite a few Alpha's and Beta's - think my first one was Myth:TFL. Updates were made twice a week if not once a day in some cases during these stages. Even getting to test the game out for free we would have been pretty vocal if suddenly no updates were heard of for weeks on end.
There are a few reasons for discourse here - one being lack of communication in the forums. I've never seen an alpha where the lead designer doesn't hob nob in the forums.
Second one is a pure dolor amount issue - Notch is currently making a lot of money here - he has bragged as such on his blog. This money came from people who love the game or were very interested in it. Not only is it in his best interest to speed up production here but people have spent money, Notch has received a lot of money - there is no excuse as to why things aren't progressing.
Once money exchange is taking place you expect a certain level of professionalism - Notch now has a full time job with this as long as it lasts. If this means staying up late - cutting back on your gaming - hammering down for a few weeks to work on sed game then that's what he is expected to do. When I started my company I was forced to not only perform normal day to day obligations but also setup an office, get licensed, get an accountant ect. Joys of doing good is working twice as hard till the dust settles (hell hasn't settled yet for me unfortunately).
So long rant there - people have every right to complain since even Notch reminds us weekly updates should be done (hence the constant apologies for not doing it every week). It's in his best interest to do them and quite frankly this game will never reach it's potential unless he starts treating it like a real business opportunity.
1. Notch promises regular updates and smp&beta soon
Really? Where'd you read that?

You have no idea to what extent things are progressing, to be honest. He appears to be making progress with the company. But I s'pose since the game isn't updating it's hurrr no progress qq time.
T' be honest with ye all, I'm normally on th' side of th' "Notch Lovers". Arcon's post above me, though kin'a opened my eyes a bit. I un'erstand that Notch is jus' a nerd who want's t' play his videogames, but he needs t' start kickin' ass on gettin' this thing out o' alpha.
Now, back on topic, I think tha' th' update should include fish! Fishin' is a lot o' fun fer me, and I'd love t' be able t' fish in game. Givin' use t' a lot o' th' useless items would be nice, too!

That's ridiculous. Notch has a blog that he updates near daily, and he has a twitter (which he routinely responds to tweets directly.)

Do you understand the concept of "hiring developers", "creating a business", etc? Why do you think he is doing this?

No, actually, your customers don't define your hours. Your boss does. You know who Notchs boss is? Notch. And Notch has decided that this last couple of weeks was better served creating an infrastructure to better facilitate development. That takes time. And I would definitely prefer a couple developers with a schedule to a single guy who has to manage not only development, but accounting, servers, etc.

Except when he is actually setting up the business. THAT DOESN'T COUNT YOU GUYS!!!
And frankly, if you consider Friday updates to be the only gauge as to if things are progressing, well, you are a pretty amateur businessman and you know jack all about software development.
Doesn't notch have 3 other people to help him, now?
I'd hate to imagine that notch is sitting between a computer and a desk of paper work, and has to decide which he wants to work on, while 3 other guys are standing over him, doing nothing but watching.

And yes, fish would be a grand meal, and a health alternative to the all pork diet.

Point by point--
I've taken part in an alpha or two as well, and content updates weren't made weekly, or even on a regular schedule.
On the community page next to the link to these forums it saids "Notch reads these"
One of the keys to professionalism is knowing balance. Knowing when to take some R&R is part of that balance. Likewise, what do you think he's doing in lieu of updating? That's right, making a company.
Both the community and Notch may want to have weekly updates, but things get done when they get done. There can and will be setbacks, and we have no choice but to roll with them. If it turns out that weekly updates are too overwhelming for Notch, then perhaps he should switch to bi-weekly updates or goal-oriented updates.
Frankly, people have no right to whine if they don't understand at least some part of the development process.
Man, this entire thread is complete ********. The only way for any of you to redeem yourselves is for you to understand the phrase "It's done when it's done." Nobody owes you ANYTHING, unless it's in the goddamned contract:

Q: What do I get when I buy the game?
A: A flag gets set on your account on minecraft.net, allowing you to download the full game as many times you want, from any computer in the world. Note that nothing physical gets sent to you, the game is distributed digitally only.
Fans of notch: keep loving the game, droogs.
EDIT: as for people who are complaining about the right to complain about other people's right to complain, SOMEBODY has to point out how ridiculous this entire argument even is. I mean how HIGH do you have to BE to even POST something like that?
Doesn't notch have 3 other people to help him, now?

Notch, you have people under you, now. Delegate.
See, this is where people get confused between in-game updates, and infrastructure. Notch has been posting (pretty much daily) on his blog and twitter about exactly what he's spent the last two weeks doing. Hiring is a part of it, yes. But do you think you just say "work for me on this game" and they start working immediately? He is still in the process of forming a company, which means first he needs to get whoever his financial guy is to figure out how are they going to pay these guys, setup payrolls, get the appropriate tax forms generated, make sure your following all the many laws about such things. While some of these things are just done by whoever his finance guy is, he *still* has to decide how he wants to do it, do sit-down meetings, fill out mass tons of probably pretty scary paperwork all with his signature on it.
This is all so he can *GET BACK TO DEVELOPING*. Go find a friend somewhere who has started a small business, and ask how long the process took. It's not as simple as "rent building, ask people to work for me, Minecraft Updates?".
Frankly, if I was a developer and I saw "well why doesn't he take an hour or two and code us "x feature that actually requires many many hours of code writing, testing, and implementing", I mean, coding is easy right?
If you think it's so simple, go ahead and tear apart the .jar, and make all the features you want as an mod, and then hey, send him the code you've done so you can see it in game faster.

Unless he's promised about 20 times in his blog that "Updates are coming soon." "Updates ARE coming soon! Keep giving me mah moneyz!"
THEN he says : "Sorry, couldn't give you that update I promised you three times because I was too busy playing Civ5. I need a week to wind down by drinking beer!" *three weeks later* "I'm almost done with this giant beer cup, updates ARE coming soon."

He hangs himself from all of the pressure you're putting on him?
I personally don't care if Notch has spent all week playing Civ 5 or is busy working on getting staff to make the game more epic. It is his game and he can do with it as he wants.
I can tolerate when people are fine with very little updates being released. What I can not tolerate is when people flame me when I voice my opinion about notch pushing back his ANNOUNCED update schedule by 5 months or more.
Once again, this is an Alpha, there can and will be setbacks. If the announced schedule has to be reworked, then it has to be reworked. Remember, "The best-laid plans of mice and men / Often go awry"
What I don't tolerate is that you think people can't have the belief that you're opinion is much to harsh.
