I love this game because I'm normally not a patient person, but building large things takes a long time, and that helps me be more patient.
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to happen to some people here**cough**Whinybitches**cough**
I generally respond to what I deem silly questions with sarcasm.
Yes, he plays Civ5 on his off time. He also has a lot of business crap to deal with thanks to all this extra income. Believe it or not, business stuff IS working on Minecraft. Most people don't see this as a direct benefit to them, either because of ignorance, short-sightedness, or the need for instant gratification.
It is rather irritating. Just because you don't see a direct benefit from in-game updates, doesn't mean that progress is not being made.
I see where you're coming from. A lot of the effort that goes into Minecraft are things that the consumer will never see. Considering Notch's initial enthusiasm for his project, and the success it has experienced, I find it doubtful that this delay is completely to be blamed on laziness on Notch's behalf. Considering the catalyst that seemed to set off this delay, that being the unstable server issues experienced recently, I find it likely that Notch is trying to solidify the foundations of Minecraft before continuing to improve it. However, making such an assumption is just as flawed as making the assumption that Notch is sitting around laughing at our posts while Civ V loads. The lack of information from Notch is the most frustrating part of this ordeal.

That is actually less of an assumption, if you keep up with his blog, which generally tells you of his progress / what he's working on and such. Actually. It isn't an assumption at all.
oh boy, another week of "notch hates us, he's never going to update this game, total ripoff" threads
and equally retarded "notch loves us, all hail notch, i want notch's babies, most games don't even get updated" threads
i can hardly wait

I wonder when he's just going to announce that he's abandoned the game.
I mean - really. If you're a programmer, then you ****ing program. I don't care how busy you are. It's his ****ing job now. The fact that two weeks have passed with absolutely no progress is rather pathetic. You're telling me that in 14 full days, he was unable to do ANYTHING?
I work full time and have two children... I work ****ing hard. I still find time to do other things that I love... Even if it's minimal at times, it's still something.
This is ALPHA... Implement ideas already so we can test them - that's the whole point of releasing this ****.
I be pretty disappointed...Can't he just hire another programmer? Then he can just direct where he wants the game to go and still have updates come-through if he gets "busy" or truely busy. Maybe even hire yet-another programmer to go back through the game and focus on fixing any bugs that crop up.
I feel like has forsaken me!
..But I know how game dev turns out most of the time...It's a rough winding road of success and failure...
Also-- to hire any programmers he needs to get his company settled down...
Maybe we should be criticizing his partners for not trying to get his company all set-up faster?
Does it really take a month of lawyer-ing to get a small company set up?
That is actually less of an assumption, if you keep up with his blog, which generally tells you of his progress / what he's working on and such. Actually. It isn't an assumption at all.
Most my time these days is taken up by meetings and lawyers, accountants, banks, potential partners, potential employees, and the occasional interview. The few hours I do have to develop the game every now and then are mostly spent on looking into bugs and replying to emails.
All this non-development work will result in a much nicer working environment, with talented people helping out with development, an actual office, and a much better way to deal with support issues, bug reports and feature requests.
It’s a good thing I didn’t know how much work setting up a company would be when I started doing it..
The status right now is that we’re up to four people confirmed, and we’re talking to several people. We almost got an office, but they wanted us to sign up for three years, which seems a bit like a gamble for a startup. So we’re still looking for an office.
I know some people feel let down by the lack of updates. I’m sorry.
But I am working. Hard. =)
This = a perfectly good excuse to not update this week. Had I read this before, I certainly wouldn't have accused him of wasting time. He's in a phase right now where the best work he can do for the game isn't the work we can see directly, but I'm confident that he knows what he's doing and will have Seecret Friday Updates back on track soon. And honestly, with his new devs, I'd be willing to put some money on the next update we get seriously kicking ass.
He did, actually. But I mean, think about it. He can play 5 hours of Civ a night, but maybe he was doing office, hiring, or lawyer related stuff for 8 hours that day. I feel like its pretty unfair to think he should spend 24 hours a day programming for our amusement.
IMHO, he should be able to squeeze in at least a bug fix. I know the guy is busy, but so busy that he can't sit down for 5 minutes and write us up a quickie?
Come on, Notch! We're counting on you!
I love how people in this thread are citing games that are rolling out updates lately that have massive budgets and developing staffs and then complaining that notch (who has few, if any yet, people working with him regularly) isn't rolling out a ton of updates while he's simultaneously trying to get a business off the ground. Grow up people, and enjoy the updates you get. Notch has a lot on his plate lately, and the idea that he's not strapping himself to his computer coding 24/7 is perfectly acceptable. Starting a business takes a lot of time and resources, particularly at the stage in the process that Notch is in. Besides, you're playing a game that's still, for all intents and purposes, in early development. No dev. process is 100% steady. It comes in spurts. There were a lot of updates launched in the last couple months, so it's perfectly normal for there to be a couple week slow period every now and then in the process.
Man, another week without an update? That makes me a sad panda. I want more awesome stuff to keep the game exciting. I understand why he might not have an update tomorrow being super busy and all. So don't take this as complaining. Just disappointed.
Some of you guys are despicable, Notch is a VERY busy man. He is stalling the updates to spend time on his new company.
HE is creating the company for US, so we can play a better minecraft!

We don't require 24/7 updates, but he did have a schedule going there, and he broke it twice. No major biggie, but NOTHING?
Not one measly bug fix?

'one measly bug fix' in the programming world is often a time-consuming process. If you had any experience in the field, you'd know that. Further, past trends do not predict future outcomes. So what? He had a few good weeks where he was able to churn out a lot of stuff. Not every week is the same, and lately he's been working on the logistics/business aspect of the company/development. That's not an easy task and it takes a lot of time. While knuckleheads sit here bawwwing about there not being any immediate updates to sate their desire for instant gratification, Notch is working to make sure that the long term situation is improved and viable. I can't fault him for that.
Bug fix =/= measly
programming = time consuming
setting up a business = hard
setting up a business = frustrating
Playing Civ 5 = relaxing
sleeping = a must
little =/= nothing
hating on notch for this = dumb
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to happen to some people here**cough**Whinybitches**cough**
To be honest, it isn't that hard, especially with this side of the forum.

Business negotiations suck!
Yep, that pretty much sums it up.
Enlightening.

who said he was spending days playing Civ 5?
Notch.

Notch will make up for it in the end.
