You guys would all be better to just go play the game more rather than to have an internet forum argument.
So far I dont think this one is much of an arguement. The OP was quite calm and not flame...y.... when making that original post. As such, my own post was calm and unangry as well.
And I for one probably WILL go play the game, but not for about an hour yet, it's gotta wait a little bit.

I think your logic is wrong and fragile! Err.. umm.. ad hominem fallacy! Yeah! Err... You're a troll!
I would also wish for more frequent updates, but he is only 1man, and i understand it takes time and a lot of work.
I dunno if Notch has a job other than MC, IMO if he does he should quit it and only focus on developing MC, he struck gold with this game and i can see ALOT of potential here, imagine what MC is gonna be like in a few years, id have no problem paying for expansions later on and dlc or whatever if the content is good.
Why do people equate more money with instantly faster updates? Money doesn't suddenly change the amount of time it takes to program. Notch is currently doing the most logical thing with the money he's gotten from this game. He's investing it into a company that in turn can help get even more done with the game. The game just got insanely popular basically overnight (I keep seeing topics about 50,000+ purchases or whatever in a 1 day period now.) He hasn't just been sitting on a horde of millions of dollars for months, this kind of large monetary influx is something that he's JUST gotten. And this money is now essentially going right back into the game.
He's not a robot. Development takes time. Instead of going hardcore spending sleepless nights straight developing he's now got the creation of a brand spankin' new company (well, brand new in that it's becoming more of a physical entity instead of a name and a computer) which takes a whole hell of a lot of time.
You get an update a week. He has opened the windows of his development to everyone else to see. Working on a game is not by any stretch of the imagination a smooth process. Bugs abound, ideas that seem great on paper have to be scrapped after their implementation in the game doesn't work out. New code has to be written. Old code has to be rewritten when the new code screws it up. It's a messy process.
Personally the fact that we're getting an update every week is amazing. The best I could have hoped for is once a month for anything decent. If the game was commercially released (for instance an MMO) I'd expect weekly bugfixes but I wouldn't expect anything significant except once in a blue moon. (And for a game still very much in development weekly bugfixes for the community, one could logically conclude, would severely limit the actual development of the game as he has to focus on minor aspects instead of the game at large)
The fan in me agrees, because cmon! We want all these awesome features asap! Or at least bigger updates!
But the realistic part of me doesn't. So far it's just been the one man doing the whole thing. He has life responsibilities which can be hard enough, let alone keeping hundreds of thousands of people happy on a weekly basis. We signed on for an early version of a game under heavy development under his terms, so we just have to deal with that. And now he's having troubles with servers because the game is too popular, and setting up his company to help deal with all the customers, business and all the things that distract him from working on the game.
This is probably THE hardest stage in the whole process for Notch right now. Once things get settled with all that and he can focus mainly on working on the game then we'd have more of a right to expect faster updates. But for now we really shouldn't. This is also a very ambitious game too and he's handling it very well. He could be adding any old stupid idea in the world to this game, but he's spending time thinking of quality features.
Onus, in essence, yes, thats what i meant to say, but in rant form it sounds all negative, and i apologize. And yes, im not one to babble and flame for stupidity's sake. Thanks for the feedback guys. Constructive and is fun to read others viewpoints. Its better than being cut down by people who like to over-analyze your posts. You know who you are.

Fair enough. But, some of the updates are quite small. It wasnt the frequency alone that made me itch, it was the quality of said updates, as in you know, like what they introduced. But again, ive learned much from this thread. So, my views have changed.

He is but a single man forming a new company. Many game developers are slower for smaller patches for what Notch brings out. For a game still in Alpha testing, it is still fast development and most games don't even have that. The game was only $13.50 or so in American dollars. I can say that is a very little amount for a game that I will be playing for probably years to come. Notch is doing everything right and I love the way Minecraft is turning out.
I guess I can agree to disagree, because every one is entitled to their opinions.
A) A one-man team can't produce massive updates constantly, that's an unrealistic expectation.
:cool.gif: Adding Devs would possibly SLOW DOWN things at first as they would need to be brought up to speed (using up Notch's time) and then every time they did something they'd need to explain it to Notch (more time) etc etc... Differences of opinion on design would need to be discussed and decided on. A benevolent dictator is the most effective form of government and that's what we have now, lets not rock the boat. (VERY benevolent, who else would provide a 5day free 'weekend')
C) Weekly updates is actually *really fast* !! We should all be happy with that. I understand that desire for 'something new' because it's like opening presents: super fun! But lets all get a hold of ourselves and appreciate what comes (sneak was awesome, I'm quite happy with the last update).
D) The whole 'he's got millions now so we deserve more' argument is going to stir up lots of annoyance from the community. It's not like YOU gave him a million dollars, you gave him $10... and got a game out of it, end of transaction/entitlement. After a year of hard work he deserves the money and shouldn't feel pressured to put it all back into development (I know I wouldn't!).
So, notch is god. Confirmed, seen in real life, true facts etc etc. Thats all good fine and dandy now, but i have a small problem with it. Hes making tons of money off of this game. Its amazing really. He has done what blizzard did only on a smaller scale which is, make a great game, rake in the cash and satisfy its fan base. What i dont understand is, this game is making him loads of cash, yet the rate at which its being updated and the rate at which features are being implemented is extremely slow imho. I know you all are going to disagree, but come on, one small update a week? We are giving this guy millions of dollars for a great game, but i think and im sure other people do that it needs to be updated much faster. I think he needs to spend some of that hard earned cash on a pro Dev team or something. I really am starving for some good updates and ground breaking features, but each Friday i come home from work and see a useless fish pole and a semi useful crouching feature. I know he tried to do biomes and i know hes got his work cut out for him, but im sure we could all overlook simple bugs in favor of major updates and expansions and deal with bugs later.
Dont flame, its just my opinion. Feedback please, i wanna know what others think.
tl;dr: Notch needs to add stuff to the game alot quicker and in bigger quantities. Cus we want that.
Blizzard is far, far worse. They pull in monthly subscriptions from up 11,000,000 accounts but only release a content update once or twice per year.
The only thing Blizzard did which other MMORPGs failed at was responsive controls and minimal lag.
Holy hell people, i was not comparing him to blizzard for the third time, i was simply saying he has done something similar to blizzard in terms of his games popularity. Please, read >.<

Far be it from me to feel any extreme entitlement here, but I think that saying that the transaction is over with at this point is short-sighted.
People are buying this game because it is fun, and because it will someday be made into something more. I'm not saying people should be banging down Notch's door for updates, but he's selling people early access to a game that is in alpha - that means that the game should grow and turn into something much greater before beta, and absolutely before the game is "complete".
As I said before, I'm not the type to feel any great sense of entitlement, but I can say with some certainty that I would feel just a little cheated if Notch decided tomorrow that he's done working on the game and it is finished. It's a fun game and all, but it's not nearly what I would call complete.
Quote from Stardog »
Minecraft is probably the most often-updated game I've ever owned.
Indeed, it is. But that's because it is in alpha and is not yet complete. It should be updated frequently.
I think it's pretty disrespectful (I know you didn't mean it to be) to say to someone who has taken a lot of their own time to make this game that you love so much that he's not doing it fast enough. He doesn't have to do it at all. He doesn't owe anyone anything. You've probably gotten a hell of a lot more entertainment out of Minecraft than you would most other things you could get for the same amount of money.
I sincerely doubt there are programmers banging down Notch's door to come work on Minecraft. Who knows how long interest in this thing is going to last? Any reasonable person would be hesitant to take a job working for such a new company. If I were Notch, I'd be hesitant to hire too many people at once as well. If you get too big too quickly and then interest in the game decreases, you end up having to fire people because the income is no longer there to pay them.
You think people would be happy if Notch released major patches with bugs? No they wouldn't. Have you ever been around the forums of an MMO on patch day? It's not pretty. People will say they want it out sooner but when the time comes and it's full of bugs they'll do a 180 and start demanding that the devs get it right before they release it.
I get wanting more frequent updates. Who doesn't want to get what they want sooner rather than later? However, IMO it's not reasonable to criticize someone for not doing what you want when they've already done more than anyone has a right to expect of them.

This is a characteristic that many people in the world fail to achieve - humbleness. I commend you for being open and not stubborn.

First wave - It was the crafting system, finite water, paintings, crafting recipes, total shitload of stuff.
Second wave - Secret Friday updates. Boats, minecarts, redstone, boats, doors, snow, cacti, reed/books, slimes, cows, chickens, milk, eggs, clay, bricks, MULTIPLAYER, powered minecarts, storage minecarts, *breath*, and jukeboxes. And I've missed some.
Third wave - What now?
