Just explore cave systems near you and when you hear zombie, skeleton, spider sounds, (alot of sounds) - follow the sound and you'll probably end up hitting a dungeon with the appropriate spawner of whatever sound you were hearing.
EDIT:
Anyways, it isn't fun to find dungeons using cheating (well not cheating, to me it is) software like McEdit. Chances are you'll find it legitly then unlegitly.

Just listen while exploring caves, you will hear alot of noises just before coming near one (depending on the monster)
then just dig towards the sounds.
damn ninjad.
note; do not use cartograph, its cheating >:sad.gif:

I REFUSE TO GO INTO CAVES...
The noises are scary...
Most dungeons are found in or near caves, turn the difficulty to normal (the easiest one is normal sadly)
and its not that bad, just make sure you have alot of torches

Erm... I don't have much fighting experience, so I guess that I should just use a bow and arrow, bring some torches, and turn my music off?
Kill Creepers, skeletons with bows, meele zombies. Spiders can be killed both ways. I just meele stuff and I have never actually used a bow in minecraft before lulz.

Used the search function and primarily registered for forums to get an answer to this: The sounds that come up when you're in caves (not from monsters, just the random bits of background sounds/music), are those in relation to a nearby dungeon, or do they just randomly play when you're in some kind of cave?

Yeah, I believe the spooky sounds play when a dungeons is somewhere around you.
Not always dungeons, usually it just means a cave is nearby.

Generate a normal map, then generate one that only shows block 48 (mossy cobblestone).
Put one over the other in photoshop/paint.net/gimp, and viola- a map showing you where dungeons are.

Play iTunes or some other music program while going into caves then. It's not that scary though without music.
I invite the ambient sounds.

The cave ambient, etc, is on the Music Side of the program, I think. While skeleton sounds, zombie, creeper, and spider are on the Sound side.
no, you need sound to warn you of hostiles.
make sure you bring spare tools, armor( if you got any) and some food to heal, a weapon helps too.
make sure the difficulty is not easy if you are getting too many monsters.
