I agree that it's better to value your life. I've once lost an entire haul of gear and ores because I walked into lava, and I haven't touched that world since. However, the single spawn point makes my compass all but useless, I want to be able to set my compass point to point to my base and storage boxes, to the entrances of caves, etc. One spawn point kills this utility.
I tried Grid Mining for the first time the other day... Found a diamond, then went back to my base to find an iron pickaxe And on my way back I died from a creeper. Needless to say I havent played that world since
I would like to have a mobile spawn point of some kind, Maybe like the gravestone someone suggested earlier, but with a diamond or two involved. Diamond blocks are going a bit over the top. As for stopping pansies putting them in every mine 1. Just don't be a pansy and do that and 2. Include similar rules to the gravestone idea, like the has to be above ground in the light, cannot be too close to each other ect
If mobile spawn points are added, what's the problem? If you don't want to use them, don't use them. That's like saying "because they were implemented, I must use it" which is ridiculous. I don't like the idea of people trying to tell other people how they should play the game. Play it however you want to play it. I, personally, am FOR movable spawn points at some point in the future. I like putting options in the player's hands rather than cramming it down their throats that "thou shalt play as I command you!" Some people would abuse it, some would not, but again, that's all up to the individual player. What do you care how someone else plays their game if it doesn't affect you? I just don't get why people are so obsessed about how they want other people to play. There is no direct competition between players so no one gets an unfair advantage over someone else by exploiting a game feature. The comparison and competition is all in your head. I'm not trying to be an asshole but I really hate when people post threads about how the game "should be" for everyone when they're really only thinking of themselves. Let each player have the freedom to determine how difficult or easy to make their playing experience instead of telling them how to do it because that's how you play.

Let each player retain the freedom to determine their own playing experience. Realize that not everyone likes to play the same way you do. Keep difficult elements of Minecraft optional!
Which in turn creates spawn point abuse by simply building a small chamber with a bed in any cave system every once in a while, so if you die you lose hardly any progress as you are only a small trip away.
Which has been discussed in great detail in this thread:
There are many ways of preventing beds being used at the first sign of danger and nearly every logistical issue with moving spawn points has been discussed there.
Ok, so instead of beds, make it something involving diamonds, and when you destroy it you don't get all of your diamonds back. Sort of like what happens with boats. So if you want to be a pansy it'll cost you some :Diamond:'s
One spawn point really sucks. It pretty much forces you to make your base at the spawn point, because if you make it too far away you may never find it again. I've experienced this plenty of times when I was first starting out.
Beds make sense. but yes, there is a problem with the possible spamming. im liking the flag idea: above ground, expensive, open sky, produces little to nothing when broken down. i feel however that multiple flags would be rather nice. when a player dies, they are able to then choose their spawn. the flag has to be faaar away from the original spawn as well. i feel the flag selection system should be like that of a checkpoint selection system equivalent to Bad Company 2's spawn select. also, everytime you spawn, the spawner is weakened. this prohibits will of death
Setting everyone an unchangeable spawn point in survival multiplayer has potential to cause serious trouble. Imagine that person A decides to go to an awesome new server, and spawns in front of person B when entering the game. Person B now knows where person A spawns at, and in an act of pranks, encloses it with a huge amount of cobblestone. The next time person A dies, well...
I am for multiple spawn points, But maybe instead of being able to make a bed, making it a random drop from a dungeon chest, or a "dragon den" (an idea form another thread). If ppl could just craft them then they will be abused, but if it was something like a rare drop, that you can only place once would keep people from placing them all over the place.

I don't really think player abuse would be too much of a problem, in single player it doesn't matter, and in smp just make rules like the spawn has to be above ground ect. And you could always just add the option to disallow spawners
