I would use the preview thing to help me. And to prevent this kind of thing in the future, try laying down a material that has no purpose, like cloth. Don't throw items, as that can dissapear.

I revel in the sensation of being lost because I can go for years without experiencing it.

Make an arrow, or even just a small triangle, out of torches and use cartograph. That way I can easily locate myself on the map, and know which way to go in relation to the arrow.
I got lost before while searching for reeds. *still haven't found any*
I ended up straying REALLY far. I had to use cartographer to get back, but even then it wasn't easy.
What I did was build several large towers of dirt to act as landmarks, using cartographer as a guide, I then slowly made my way back through process of elimination while adding giant dirt towers every mile or so, with dirty big arrows pointing in the direction to my base
I also make towers at any interesting caves or structures I came across. I might want to re-visit them again if I ever get around to making a skyway or minecart track.
And yeah. Still no reeds. I'm going to be really cautious and use 'breadcrumbs" (dirt every 5 steps or so) to mark my way.
Well, I built my home in a mountain and ended up getting pretty high on the mountain and putting a ton of glass in with torches near by so it glows. If I'm lost, I look for the glowing mountain top. However, I hate being out at night so I try not to get too far away.
Sort of curious if I could build a small house next to the spawn point and then build underground tunnels connecting the house to everywhere important. hmmmm....
Don't use dirt. Dirt grows grass and immediately blends into the surroundings.
Grass only grows if there is other grass around, but there are other ways.
How to construct a simple beacon tower anywhere outside:
If starting out, gather 2 stacks of 64 dirt and a about 9 torches. Split the stacks into groups of 16, find a hill or something close to where you can see your base from.
Place 2 dirt immediately below you while jumping.

Place 2 more dirt on the other stack.

Rinse and repeat until you've used up a stack of 16 dirt, or a 2x1 tower that is 8 units tall.
At 8 units tall, place a torch on the top of the other stack, place a dirt on top of the torch.

Then place 2 more dirt below you and keep building up. Following the same pattern until you run though all 8 stacks of 16 dirt or hit the maximum height. Place a torch at the top of the stack.
Now for the mater of getting down... The stack below you should be all dirt, so just dig your way down to the ground. You now have a tower roughly 68 units tall with a torch at the top, that will not only never grow grass, but can probably be seen for quite a distance around. It's not the best solution or the most flashy, but it is the least costly time, resource, and life wise for making a marker post. If it makes you feel better, you can come back later and draw an arrow in sand, gravel, or cobblestone pointing in the direction of your base so you can find it with cartographer, but if you're going that route, you could just use a heightmap render of your world which will show very clearly all your towers.
But really, towers, arrows, and lighthouses are not necessarily the best way to learn how to orient yourself since these things may become less useful when torches become limited duration, and will act as a homing beacon for any grievers in the area on a multi-player game. Being able to orient yourself spatially with the sun and moon when outside, and coming up with your own system for learning where you are below ground is an always useful skill.
When I get lost above ground, I usually pillar myself all the way to the clouds to get a better view and to find my base. If this doesn't help, I look around for familiar places that may be NEAR my base. I would not go so far that I couldn't get back within a few minutes.
If I want to explore a new area, I might leave a torch on an arrow shaped landmark (the arrow is pointing to the base of course), and if I get too far from my base, I simply look for that torch in the night. I would leave a few of these arrow markings here and there. (I make the arrows with a simple material like cobblestone, gravel, or wood. The torch would be on a block too.

PvP is like sex. When both parties are willing, it can be a very enjoyable experience. However, when one party is not, it is bound to ruin someone's day.
When spelunking, I put torches to the left only. So then, when I turn around, or I find a torch, if it's to the right, follow it to the surface! OH and another one. DON'T GET LOST.
Whenever I leave my lighthouse I always take note of which direction I'm going so that if I get lost I just use the sun to find North and then I have no issue finding my way back.
Well I just start building a secondary settlement. I mean I was just gonna go back to my usual house and build more house anyways. I'm currently lost far away from the stuff I made last time I was lost which is really a bummer.
I made medium to large towers to find my base. each stocked with some torches in a chest, lit up and locked via door. i find these can save your life. if your out at night and become pursed by mobs, open the door to the tower, shut it, and climb. then wait, and watch.

On the outer ring, add a second layer of stone, then glass, then stone, then add 3 dirt on one side, and make a roof by
covering the top with stone. then dig up the dirt. for personal touch i always put glass in the middle.
BTW, if you made a tall tower, gather a load of ladders.
If I'm feeling proud, I go back the way I came. If I go the wrong way, I get even more lost (by accident.) Then I start wishing I hadn't made my base out of snow blocks in a snow map.
If I'm not feeling much too proud, I walk up to a creeper and ask for directions. Then I'm at the spwan again!

Zombies in the area will have the skin melt away and only their SKELETONS will remain, and they'll shoot ARROWS from their STERNUMS. Creepers will still explode as usual, but their suicide will also release a LAVA SPRING from their REMAINS.
