So I figured after doing a bit of searching/trolling I'd just ask to see if I can get an actual answer.
I'd like to know some actual numbers instead of relying on "it's sorta close" or other vague answers.
When mining around you often encounter various sounds and what-not. I'd like to know in an actual programmers approach to how close you are to things.
For example, when you hear running water sound, what is the proximity value that is triggered when the player approaches a block that's got water on it? Eg. 4 blocks up or down? or what?

Roughly around 10 squares or so, go a river and see when you hear it, that's the same distance that'll apply in caves.
