Does anyone else have the problem of night time completely incapacitation their building abilities? Not everyone is playing for the mining part of the game and some are playing simply for the construction aspect. When working on superstructures no number of torches can compensate for the dreadful blindness inflicted by the night. I'm really hoping that the day/night cycle becomes toggleable in the future.
I build everything from castles to shift registers at night, so no, it's not impossible. Just turn up your brightness a tad and squint at your monitor.
I have the same problem on my laptop, and my brightness is set to max. Meanwhile, the guy next to me playing on his can see fine at night. There needs to be a brightness/gamma adjustment in the options.
It really depends on your monitor. Until today, anything otuside my torches' range was pitch black (brightness was maxed on my monitor).
I got a new LCD monitor to replace my 12-year old CRT tube monitor, and now I can actually see at night. Caves are extremely less frightening now :smile.gif: (Before, when i opened a new cave, I had to leap into the pitch blackness, drop a torch, and leap back for fear of creepies in teh darkness)
Gamma adjustements would be nice, but you might also consider toughing it out and putting lots of torches. I can accurately say that I am incapable of seeing anything at all at zero lighting, and I still get stuff done all times of the day.
Edit: "going to creative" is pointless advice for a multitude of reasons, the the most important of which being that Creative is not the same as alpha, they have different features.

Nothing beats the contrast ratio of a CRT monitor it sounds like yours might of dimmed though over the years. Did you try adjusting the brightness through the graphics card or only through the monitor buttons?
Well, you aren't really supposed to build at night.....or see.
Anyway, if you want to build, go to creative.
STOP saying go to Creative if people just want to build. Does Creative have doors, new mobs, signs, fences, flowing water, boats, minecarts, redstone, diamond and other stuff!? NO so why do people like you constantly say that?

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.

Wow, I can't believe how aggressive people are. Seriously, instead of crucifying someone who is making logical sense in the form of passive-aggressiveness, try to actually help the person in need of assistance. 'Go on creative' was a gesture, as the OP makes it seem like all he wants to to is build for the sake of building.
Now; try turning up your brightness and/or gamma. Most monitors have a button on then which allows the editing of brightness and gamma. Or better yet, don't build during the night. Night was not meant for building, it was meant for hiding. Place torches if you can't wait until day (for whatever reason).
I find that if I turn the brightness and contrast up to maximum and tilt the screen down a bit, I can see all right. Not well enough to pass a driving test, but good enough.

My monitor is notorious for being too dark in games. I have to adjust the in-game options for brightness in order to see decently even with torchlight. Of course, this is no longer a problem when I turn off the lights in the room. The fluorescent lights give a bad glare on the screen (I'm on a laptop, in the military, so I have little choice about where and how I get to play). Optimally, at home, I love to play games in a dark computer room. Then the graphics are usually just right, and I'm sure Minecraft would be fine as well.

Oh hey Jayther
Yeah, if you have trouble seeing, either increase the brightness of your screen, or do what Jayther said and use torches.
