Swimming: Hold space bar+a direction (WASD). It makes sense if you consider that all going upwards stuff (currently simply jumping and swimming) is done with the space bar.
Obsidian: Simply decorative, though hanging onto some blocks for safekeeping isn't a bad idea in case of a future update.
Rotating cart tracks: Put a redstone torch upright under the block that the track you want to control (the intersection track), and control that torch with a redstone wire. To two certain other people in this thread: How about you stop being dicks and be helpful. Some people are new to the game and don't know it inside out.

Come to think of it, I'd prefer it if you could use the space bar to climb a ladder. It would be a lot safer that way.

I knew I was missing something. Heh. I actually try to climb ladders with space all the time. Then I fall off and feel rather stupid (or often, rather dead).
