Plain and simple: Zelda 1. IN MINECRAFT. That's right. One key feature of Zelda 1 was that everything was an evenly-sized square, save the monsters. So.. it should be possible to recreate.. all of it. No dungeon in Zelda was more than 10 floors, so even if we makes each floor 3 high, there'll be plenty of room. Any thoughts on this idea?
Seeing as the dungeons are also 1 block before you step inside, it could be a problem. Unless you place them atop the rest, then it could probably work.

Nah, I'd do the dungeons underground; they don't overlap. At least, I don't THINK they do. The big problem is the overworld; it looks to be 80x352 squares, I think. Maybe more, I may have miscounted the number of screens. This, plus multiple heights, would be a total pain in the **** even with hacking.
Nah, though I'd definitely upload the finished version so it could be servified. Hm.. what the hell, might as well get started on it. First bit'll be smoothing.
So I did some screwing around with the dungeon and overworld maps in GIMP, and I have this to say: unless you make the dungeons at different depths underground, there's gonna be a hell of a lot of overlapping.
Best of luck to ya, you'll need it.
I'll be using the magic of map editors for the beginning of this to get started; the basic 'ground' layer will actually be layer 40, giving the maximum amount of room to work with. The ground is an 80x256 layer of sand, which will be supported by rock. Lots. And lots. Of rock. The outside edgewill be water, which flows down over the edge of the world - everything will be erased down to void. So if you hop off to explore... yeah. You might not want to hop off to explore.

This is gonna take forever, but it will be SO worth it.
