On my laptop, with an Intel chipset, it runs at about 15 fps. I also have a desktop with an Nvidia Geforce 8500, but a slower CPU, and even though it runs faster most of the time, it gets an inconsistent framerate due to chunk updates taking longer for the CPU to handle. (Using the Limit Framerate option doesn't help)
So, I play on my laptop, with a crappy framerate, because a consistent framerate is better than a horribly inconsistent one.
In order to get a great framerate on Minecraft, you have to have a decent GPU and a decent CPU. You can't just have one or the other. It's kind of sad though, considering some of the other games I've been able to play at decent speeds, and the fact that Minecraft doesn't exactly have amazing graphics. I wonder if Notch could somehow optimize the chunk updating process, as that would help a lot.
Somewhat off-topic: I really dislike how I can't see the sun or the moon with the view distance set to Short or Tiny. It's impossible to tell what time of day it is. But I guess that's just how Fog works...
Notch has a lot of work atm, you can't blame him that his code is cluttered while the one-man army is busy busting his balls creating online multiplayer.
I've done extensive testing on my pc trying to resolve the lag issues, and I can get the fps up to over 700 with high fog, but even then there is a consistent and calculated progression of hair-thin lag spikes that make playing the alpha a bit annoying.
Don't worry so much about your pc being the problem, because I've found from what I've heard on these forums that everyone is experiencing the issue in some way or the other.
If you feel like you're experiencing it worse than others you should consider how picky you are about the smoothness of your games. Me, I demand perfection, and that is what I get from mainstream games like CoD:MW2, Crysis, SC2, STALKER, etc. It's only the game that I really want to play in perfect fluid motion that won't run exactly how I want it to :tongue.gif:
Others will be fine and may not notice tiny lag spikes because they have adjusted to it; they may not be as picky as you are about this either.
I have Vista 32 with a Core2 duo 2.2, 4G ram & Nv9800GT.
Most of the time it runs fine, but I get random 1 or 2 second freezes.
One thing I noticed while running gpu-z in the background was that the gpu activity drops off to zero during the lags.
I'm suspecting the problem may be occurring more on the cpu end. I'll also note that I have recently been working on a huge tree farm, if that has anything to do with it. (I haven't tried the game with transparency off yet though)
There are just my observations. This problem is a mystery to me also. I just figure the more info we can post about this, the more notch has to go on when he tries to fix this (if he is reading this thread).

With fancy gfx and full view distance I would get anything between 20-40 FPS, turning down view distance just a step made it stabilize at 35-50 FPS, though it will still choke on some occasions, especially when going into unexplored areas (ie areas that don't exist and the game generates on the fly), but all in all it runs great.
Also I'm still using version 1.016_02 because of all the bugs introduced in v1.017.
quick specs: 4 gb of ram, 250 gb hd
gcard: moble intel(r) 4 series express chipset family, tot memory 1.7 gb
You have a laptop with a shitty integrated graphics card. You will lag, a lot.
The 1.7GB 'total memory' is in fact largely shared memory which is practically worthless. You probably have about 128MB of dedicated GPU memory.
The only way a laptop can run MC is if the graphics option is set to 'fast' and the fog distance to the minimum. Even then you will get lag.
It runs perfectly fine on my laptop.
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5870, 1GB of VRAM.

I just did a quick bug fix update for minecraft, fixing a certain item duplication bug, attempted to fix the player-getting-stuck-bug, and quite possibly improved the framerate under certain conditions.
Ok, I too have been having problems...
Downloaded the game today and immediatly had issues. The game is constantly "jerky", there's about 0.5-1 second lag for mouse movements which makes the game virtually unplayable. FPS is about 7. I've tried playing in browser and as a download, no difference between the two. I've changed my firewall settings to allow all Minecraft files to operate without interference. Nothing works. Is my laptop just not good enough?
Laptop Specs:
Processer: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU at 2.00 GHz
RAM: 3.00GB
System: 32-bit Vista.
GPU: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (?) (No idea what the hell any of this means :s)
Btw, I'm a total PC and laptop n00b so I've no idea if any of that is good or not, hopefully you guys can help me out, thanks :smile.gif:
Well, as it has been noted the performance issue is known by Notch and he said himself he considers it a top priority thing, additionally this seem to be affecting specifically people with integrated intel GPUs, which is what you have.
There are some things you can try to see if it helps at all, keep your drivers updated, you can find the latest version at the website of your laptop manufacturer, keep your HD defragmented (you can use the windows built in defrag tool, but there are better options such as defraggler), you said something about messing around with your firewall, but it's anti-virus software that are the problem here, you'll want to disable the real time protection OR add a rule to it so the minecraft folder will be excluded from checking.
Also notebooks have powerplans on windows, there are the default ones, power saver, balanced and high performance, usually they come defaulted on balanced, so you might want to switch it to high performance(you can do that by clicking the battery icon next to the clock) when connected to the mains.
And finally there's another trick you can try, start up the downloadable client and then go to the task manager by hitting ctrl+alt+del, look for a process named javaw.exe, right click it and there should be an option to "set priority", go ahead and set it to above normal or high, it's not recommended to set it to real time tough.
I've also observed this on a laptop i beuit a few weeks ago. Avast on, laggy jumps every half a second. Avast off, everything's fine. To be honest I'm amazed I haven't seen more about this, as I say I've seen it on two different systems.
Not here. That anti virus is running 24/7. I get no lag. NOT EVEN WHEN I KILL THE TREE WITH FIRE!
What is wrong with everyone? Why do people have so much trouble with Minecraft?
Laptop:
2.2GHz Dual Core Intel Pentium CPU
ATI Radeon 4570 w/ 512MB dedicated graphics
4GB RAM
Windows 7 (x64)
I'm running this game at far render distance, fancy graphics, HD textures, and I'm still clicking along at my standard, capped frame-rate of 60fps, with a dip of maybe 10 or 15 if I run so far that a new chunk needs loading, or the sun rises/sets.
Anyone who runs it at more than 60fps is just showing off, you can't see the difference. Even 30fps is good enough.

Yet I get easssy 200fps on Fast, Normal render distance, with the 3d Dot Game heroes texture pack.. Yet recording i can hardly cap 30fps kinda saddens me =/

Cool story bro. Please make a thread somebody cares about next time.
If anyone gets spikes of lag, they might want to completely uninstall and reinstall Java, even if it is fully updated.
I have a Core 2 Duo E8400 overclocked at 3.6 Ghz and a GTX 285. My average framerate on the 'far' rendering distance is around 100 fps, but the game would still bog down to 5 or even 2 fps for a second or two while I was playing. I uninstalled Java and reinstalled it and the game runs much better!
WTF OSHI wait you! slow down show some ID! Ok your clear
repeat 1 million times a second
Update Java and your videocard.
It'll probably work better.
I just got uuuh... BSoD on Touhou. Wat.
