Hey! I got one of those myself. I found a lava spring at the bottom, and eventually... when going through a tunnel, I by chance found myself at the bottom. I plugged up most of the lava and found coal and iron. At tbe top, I made a small fence around the pit.

PvP is like sex. When both parties are willing, it can be a very enjoyable experience. However, when one party is not, it is bound to ruin someone's day.
No one seems to have entertained the idea that since he is in the browser and has wooden items... he might not even be on his computer at all...
In response though; the first time I found a cave like that I was immediately creepered... into the cave.... which ended in a lava pit 15 chunks from the bottom of the map... which ate 2 worth of diamond... because I'd never been in a natural cave yet...
Creepers don't spawn in your really really well lit stairwell you dig down yourself...
LOL. Ive accidently dug myself through a layer covering stuff like that. I got almost killed by 2 skeletons and 2 creepers. Not sure how I made it out.
I feel unlucky that I've never gotten any awesome pits like that. I usually have to spelunk for hours just to find diamond... and lava. Which may or may not eat said diamond.
Also, protip for the OP: Download the client AND FIREFOX, GODDAMMIT. Less people raging at you about your cluster****ed browser, and it has the added bonuses of NOT taking about 10 minutes to start, bringing your computer to a crawl, and getting viruses up the **** from almost nowhere.
Augh. Those toolbars. Just because some company wants to put their crap on your browser doesn't mean you should.
The pits are a semi-common cave formation, I like building stairs or ladders into them as a fast route to the bottom. I have found them a lot on ice levels, but it could be coincedence.
Wouldn't it be FUN to fall in there and have almost no way out?

I too find these pits though they are pretty nice to find as they're normally iron/lava down them.

Don't go in that cave. No fun.
God help you if they all decide to go off at the same time...
