Here is a techinique I found to easily duplicate items in minecraft, yes you could use mine edit, but this technique requires no external programs of any kind.
First, go into your minecraft game, and load up your inventory with everything you want to duplicate. I picked a nice stack of daimonds, some cart tracks, as well as 4 stacks of Iron and my diamond tools.
Save and exit.
Then go to your c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\saves\World1 (world 2,3,4 etc... depending on what world you are playing
Copy level.dat to a folder where you can find it. ex. c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\backup
Run minecraft and load your world.
Put everything you wish to copy into a chest
Save and exit.
copy the level.dat from c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\backup (or where ever you put it)
paste it into your c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\saves\World1 (world 2,3,4 etc... depending on what world you are playing
Run minecraft, (You can do this all without closing minecraft, just be at the title menu)
You will now have all the items you copied both IN your inventory, and in the Chests.
You don't approve of editing your save to exploit, but you approve of duplicating parts of your save to exploit? Aren't those pretty much the same?

<Khusa> the creepers are baby dragons
<Gunmage> Instead of spitting out fire they hold it in until they burst like balloons
<Lisimba> So if you would give a creeper a laxative, would it turn into a real dragon?
Yeah, honestly, if you are gonna do something like this, you may as well just use INVEdit or something else.
Whichever way you choose to do it, its still not legit.
Not that I am against this method or using editors, as I sometimes load up a new world and use INVedit to mess around with things(like minecarts/redstone), just saying its not really much different then using an editor.
