"I'm pretty sure the goal he was trying to hit with the new ambient cave sounds was to say that 'YOU ARE IN A CAVE, MOTHER****ER. YOU ARE IN THE DANGER ZONE."
Sigged.
this has put me off playing now... this game is scarier than half life 2's ravenholm
I think you are forgetting the scariest Half-Life chapter, and that is in Opposing Force, Chapter "Foxtrot Uniform" where you have to go into the pitch black sewer and fight those giant aliens with night vision and trip mines. That sir was scary.
Now then, I like the mob sounds fine but 90% of the cave sounds have GOT to go. I'm not whining about realism, i'm on about them not making you feel like you're in a cave, but rather there are ghosts in there or something. I'm going to work on a new cave sound set that pretty much has massive amounts of reverb and echo so that it feels like something is in the darkness before you, howling from deep within, and wind sounds (and dripping water), instead of these random noises that don't have any meaning behind them.

EDIT: I'll also do some creaking and cracking sounds to make it seem like its unstable and ready to cave in >:smile.gif:
I'm pretty sure the goal he was trying to hit with the new ambient cave sounds was to say that 'YOU ARE IN A CAVE, MOTHER****ER. YOU ARE IN THE DANGER ZONE.' In other words, setting a creepy tone for unexplored caves.
I realize the intention and the sounds are well made. I'm not questioning that. I'm saying that most of the cave ambient sounds don't fit at all with the theme of the game, which has always been slightly dimented on a fear scale. I wanted to make (hear) sounds like this for a while now, but I had to wait until they were hardcoded to play before I could make a sound set, so now's my chance.
Since when could signs be placed on walls without poles?
Shortly after signs were put into the game there was demand for wall signs. Actually, I think its a few pages into the blog regarding that very thing :smile.gif:
I was is a cave waiting for it, got distracted, then came back and put my headphones back on at the tail end of one cave noises...I also saw sheep at the edge of a cliff just looking around.
The sounds are cool and all, but I'm getting the cave sound in a small tiny former cave that now serves as a base. Totally lit up and secure. Then I get lost in a massive but pre-explored cave and no music.
I like the ambient sounds though. Makes getting startled by skeles in caves less likely. Though the zombie hit sound sure is loud.
Was I the only one who got scared shitless at the sudden unannounced monsters which would attack me in the caves? At least now they're easy to hear coming, plus, it reveals hidden rooms behind solid walls!
I totally fail at Survival; even on peaceful.
Wanna know why? MY CRAFTING IS BROKEN. It won't craft anything but woodboards.
ON TOPIC:
I was cave-exploring 5 minutes after the update in my DREAM map. I heard a screeching whail (The screamer from L4D, most likely) I haven't gotten on Minecraft since.
I totally have to wait for SMP in order to even look at a cave again.
I made a video of the newer sounds recently added to Minecraft Alpha 1.0.3. This is for the people who want to hear the new sounds, etc.
Here's the link:
OHGODOHGODOHGOD
I need to change pants.
Seriously. I thought minecraft was a childish kids game. Not a full fledged horror game that makes bricks come out of your rear end.
GOD! Add the sounds of faint explosions, wood timbers and rocks cracking/groaning, rats, the sounds of a mine cart squealing and clacking along the rail, and the faint echo of shovels and picks hitting rock, and you have the perfect ambiance for a haunted working mine.
Anyway, My mine is now buried with rubble at the cost of a chest of iron and a diamond vein in the bowls if the ungodly thing. Strip mines for me now!
They aren't that scary. Creepy, yes, but not ****-pants-and-quit scary.
EDIT: Listening to the sounds now, I gotta say; the skeleton needs more of a crunching sound and not a knocking sound. I feel like I'm hitting wood, not bone.
Ar, because the ceiling of my cave is dark I get those creepy ambiance sounds every 3 seconds, and since mob spawning is broken it doesn't matter but I still have quite a steady supply of bricks from the rear end as well. The reason being just as well as we have no monsters we have no pigs, and on this newly generated world I've taken my toll of fall damage and health isn't possible until these crops grow in, so I constantly fear these cave sounds as I know if mobs where around I might as well be running around in my own dark scary windy tomb.
Notch said these were ambient sounds. They're more like screamers.
After hearing the zombies' new, demonic, unpleasant voices, I went into a cave, and I was still a bit stirred from fighting... and then came the cave sound. I've never felt so cold before in my life.
Jesus! I was just mining in my cave and finding an abundance of redstone. Suddenly I started hearing horrible demonic zombie noises and I dug towards the sound hoping for a cave or even dungeon. To no avail I looked directly up and dug. A ZOMBIE FELL ON MY HEAD AND KILLED ME. I yelled like a little girl. After I went back to the location and killed it in an epic fist fight that ended with it getting punched into lava I realized the zombie fell out of SOLID ceiling. It didn't fall out of a cave above, it fell out of a god damned ceiling brick. :l

I just went "Oh god I can't play this anymore."
