I, for one, believe this has more potential than second life and that once we have been granted multiplayer, we will be one step closer to singularity and will probably be enlightened or some ****.
Hopefully this won't do too much better than Second Life lest it weaken it's magical seals and let forth into our world the furries contained within.

"Survival" is a film/literature/video game genre about survival and self-sufficiency in the wild.
"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase used to paraphrase natural selection.
I intend on hosting a private server with just friends, so I know SMP wont be a disappointment for me because the community building and teamwork WILL happen :biggrin.gif:
Gosh, not at all. Are you being serious? MU*s are text adventures with a multiplayer function! They're the precursor of things like Ultima Online (and, by extension, World of Warcraft) and Second Life, depending on whether it's a combat based or social MU. Minecraft's multiplayer is just Minecraft's multiplayer mode. It's not massive and it's not persistant.
Technically that's not correct, MUD's are traditionally text-based but that doesn't mean that they are all. An MMO is basically a MUD.
Umm, how is an infinite world not massive? How is a world that is saved and kept the same not persistant? By any definition Survival Multiplayer is an MMO.

Potential to do what? Second Life is an entirely customizable online world in which people do whatever the heck they want, primarily with heavy creative and social emphasis. Minecraft is an adventure game about mining, crafting and fighting blocky monsters. Anything they seem to have in common is just scraping the surface of something much, much deeper.
Yeah, this could work out, on an RP server with mature players. Minecraft is a sandbox game about choices, it bends to the players will, which means people are going to find a way to make this work.
- Building communities with thriving economies
Easily possible. Depending on the population/time spent playing the game.
- Advanced defence of fortresses
Also very possible. Plenty of trap ideas, lots of different players.
- Military actions on a grander scale (armies)
If we all meet up, sure. It could happen. Remember Minecraftcon or whatever that was?
- Recruiting people to work for them 24/7
You mean like to guard their buildings? No that wouldn't work, but why would you need that? I suppose if you had a couple friends that could watch your castle. But might as well put a bot. Which I don't recommend. Once/if taming comes out, tame a mob and have it guard. But it won't do much better than a trap.

The "massively" part needs to be said with the "multiplayer" word attached to it.
I might have been way off with the MUD-suggestion, but I'm certain "massively" refers to the amount of players more than the amount of playable area. But I'm also sure I will be corrected on that pretty soon ^^
How about we make up a new genre for minecraft?
-Massively adventuring Multiplayer (MaM)
-Massively Mining and Crafting (MMC)
-Massively Notch World (MNW)
You all do realize that majority of the servers will be run off of someone's home computer, right?
Seeing a server that can handle 30 players consistently will be rare.
Only a handful of servers will have more than 10 players on at a time, and even then, they might not be staying around said server.
Given the amount of players that will likely be around at a time, there will be no epic battles.
And even then, finding a server with people actually interested in working together instead of everyone having their own "Empire" (or being loners) is going to be a challenge
Hehe people will be uber disappointed. Their original intentions will all be shot to **** within a week of SMP.
This.
I really doubt that. Stop being so negative, jeez.
I'm pretty sure people are going to make it work. Look at all the dedicated clans to a SMP server with a good intention or role. I think that's awesome, and it will separate from the normal annoying survival servers. Which will be very few.
Hm, I don't think having a decent community would be particularly difficult. They would just almost always be on private servers. Or be on a very heavily moderated server.
I say its a sandbox, the killjoy teachers at my school scream FPS! FPS! SHUN SHUN! FPS FPS! SHUN SHUN! And assumed that minecraft was all about cutting blocky people up with a blocky sword and arrows :sleep.gif:

How to feel cool on Minecraft forums:
>New Feature is announced
>Begin claiming it ruins the game "MINECRAFT ISN'T A BED/DOG/HAVING FUN SIMULATOR, IT'S ABOUT STANDING IN YOUR HOUSE WITH NOTHING TO DO ALL DAY REMOVE EVERY FEATURE GUH"

There isn't even any dismemberment in this game!
Well....unless....
Foolish mortals. Not all servers will be run off home computers. There are many an obsessive Minecraft player on the internet, willing to buy a (semi-nice) computer to run a dedicated SMP server off of.
Unfortunately for the world, I am not one of those people. :tongue.gif:
People expecting they will be the best at the game. "Oh look another player, WEEL I'LL JUST GO OVER AND KILL THEM." Because clearly, you are a master clicker.
