So I joined the game about maybe three days ago. For becoming an expert faster, I made a list of all of the chunks. Though it seems a sort of small list. So, I want to ask you guys if I got it all.
Dirt - Dig with shovel.
Grass - Dirt exposed to sunlight.
Sand - Dirt that is brighter and effected by gravity. Furnace makes it into glass.
Gravel - Gray sand, sometimes drops flint.
Log - A resource that grows in the middle of trees that is chopped by an axe.
Branch - Grows off of the trunk of the tree. Drops items that let you plant more trees.
Rock - It's low enough below the ground. Dig with pickaxe.
Coal - Rock that drops the best resource to burn it a furnace or to put on torches.
Iron - Drops iron, which is smelted and used for mechanics.
Gold - Gold is also smelted and used for beauty.
Ruby - Used for redstone torches.
Diamond - Used for highest level tools.
Also, this is just for the things that automatically are generated as the level starts. No man made stuff. That would take forever to list.
Also, there's cacti. And water. And lava. And snow. And flowers. And mushrooms.
I don't know why you made this post.
You could just go here and all the objects: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Blocks
IMO the red stuff isn't ruby, at least I don't perceive it as such, since when mined it doesn't drop anything gem-like, but weird magical powder that can power switches and stuff.
You also missed obsidian from your list.
Don't even start on the name.
And this topic is still essentially useless in my eyes. I told him about the wiki just yesterday, he could have just looked there.
Snow - Block made by combining snowballs in a 2x2 block on the crafting grid. You get snowballs by using a shovel on thin layers of snow found on blocks. Winter maps only.
Ice - Frozen water found in only winter maps. When broken, turns into a water source until it freezes again.
Dirt - Dig with shovel.
Grass - Dirt exposed to sunlight.
Sand - Dirt that is brighter and effected by gravity. Furnace makes it into glass.

Cactus - hurts you when you break it or walk on top of it.
That's all of the blocks, I think.
You heard that, green and red.
