I like how you guys still think spawnkilling is a problem. If there were five zombies and five skeletons around your spawn, could you get away? probably. It might take a couple tries, and if you're good at the game maybe only one, but you could get away from that. Imagine a player with a sword. I could probably get away from that.
I for one have never hated spawnkilling. Back when I was a very practiced CoD4 player and one of the best shotgunners around, it was a rare gift when I was spawned with enemies around me. Normally, an enemy would instantly notice you and kill you. If you were smart you'd laugh and try again, if you were an idiot you'd whine and say they are cheating or the game sucks. I normally took advantage of being spawned around enemies, being a shotgunner I knew which fights to pick and how to hide and advance without being shot, and about half the time I did very well when spawning around enemies. The other half I was just slaughtered and that was okay, because it's a game and I would do the same thing in their situation. "Oh, he just spawned and he poses a threat to me, but it'd be unfair if I killed him, so I'll just let him kill me instead". Are you autistic?
Some people even take advantage of where people are spawning from. They get their kills that way, and honestly it's not hard to kill them. If they are bad at the game or less equipped than you are, you should be able to outskill them and spawn death-free. If they are better than you or way better equipped, persistence or teamwork should thwart them easily. This goes for minecraft or any other game. I have never seen an example of spawnkilling actually being unfair, only people whining because they aren't good enough at a game or accepting enough of a negative occurrence to have fun while there's an enemy at the spawn.
-All games have the same spawning
-You spawn with weapons in Minecraft
-You can mine through a cobblestone spawn trap with your hands in the 2 hits it takes a diamond sword to kill you.
You heard it here first folks!

"Survival" is a film/literature/video game genre about survival and self-sufficiency in the wild.
"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase used to paraphrase natural selection.
Unless you can choose when to spawn, there is no way to coordinate an attack against a spawnkiller.
And stop quoting COD4, because it is completely irrelevant and unrelated to this discussion.
AAND you're getting off topic. This isn't a discussion about spawns, it's one about OPs and their ability to enforce what they feel is fair on a server.
...Oh wait, it isn't. This thread was actually about how shitty that argument was. Which is unproductive whining
This is a lame counter-argument to the phrase "SMP has no greifers" which several users think is true. If there are no greifers in SMP, then why do you need OPs? I can't really think of any scenario besides the use of hacks that deserves a ban. After all, they're just playing the game right? I don't know how those third-party programs work, but hasn't Notch found out a way to disable (current) hacks, by adding -hax and -speed to the server txt file? Besides that, OPs would do nothing but ban hackers. Someone building around spawn? It's fine. Someone just starting out and you rape them with your diamond sword? They should of hid better. If everyone agrees there are no "greifers" in SMP, no one (besides the server owner and a few to watch for hackers) should become an op.
This is a mistake in logic that proves why we need ops. It sounds fun to have a truly free world now, but once you die from some guy spamming C4/TNT/Arrows everywhere, I believe you will change your mind. There is a fine line between taking advantages and being an asshole. That's why everyone is so jittery about land-claim flags, because they are afraid they will lose control.
text spams, people not rping in an rp server, people being general asshats and spawnkilling everyone, building gigantic cocks or other possibly offensive things, etc
some servers are going to allow this stuff, others aren't. some servers will ban you for running around destroying bases, others won't
it's all based on what kind of server it is. there's no single set of rules that apply to all servers- it's handled on a server-by server basis, generally by the host of each server
you're never going to thwart griefing in a modular system like this. there isn't even a clear definition of "griefing", it differs from person to person. that's why ops are needed, so people can join the servers that enforce the rules they like. don't want your **** to get blown up? go join an anti-grief server.
want to blow **** up? go join a pvp server
this is just as dumb as arguing about morality, guys.
I'm really tired of these threads. It's like a pack of ravenous wolves devouring a small child (come to think of it, that has no relation whatsoever to what I'm saying, but it sounds cool). We need to go back into our caves where we belong and use what Notch gives us to make our own personalized server types. Let's simma down.
I think Notch already said something about server staff, he said it via current water physics and some in-game limitations, he's simply doing everything to eliminate all ways to grief, thus trying to delete OPs from game forever.
Source, and I hope you don't have one. I'd really dislike having to give up features and let the trolls win...
Alright, the discussion is starting to die down into the part part of it's life. Also the most likely to burn like an ember into a flame post. So I'm locking this and pointing out a thread for this kind of stuff.
Anyway, A lot of people got it right. Burning down a house=Not griefing. And such.
But, I've debated this too many times now.
I don't think theres griefing in SMP.
