This seems like an inelegant solution to non-existent problem. You could spend time and resources building an expensive communication line that's a magnet for thieves, leads people right to your base, and can be broken by deleting one block, or you could just open steam or IRC and chat directly to your friend.

"Survival" is a film/literature/video game genre about survival and self-sufficiency in the wild.
"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase used to paraphrase natural selection.
And then someone can destroy one block and ruin everything
That's part of the fun!

Where is the fun in that? I want to communicate over long distance and not to have to use another program. It's not like you are wasting a lot of resources over something useless, this could save your town. Personally I hope chat is not world wide, and people don't use 3rd party chat programs. I don't want to kill a guy, and he be able to say "Lil_Parker killed me! get him!" that ruins the experience.
we need some kind of computer now i wonder how long it would take to make 1 million transistors well if each one was only one block it would only take 1000 by 1000 square to make the cpu :smile.gif:

Of course that ruins the experience, they're able to tell people to kill you while you're alone and defenseless, counting on someone to be at the communications line, which can only say "HALP"

So you want to get rid of chat so people are forced to use some convoluted, delicate, and unintuitive form of communication that's more of a liability than an asset just for RP value?

nNa: I'm pretty sure it would be really annoying in the middle of the night when you are walking around your courtyard in the castle and an army of skeletons shoots arrows over the wall.
Easy to destroy? You can hide it about 3 blocks underground and it can only be found if people accidentally stumble upon it or know which two houses have the system. Even then, the light could be inverted so the other player knows the wire's been cut then light 5 goes off.
About opening up an IRC or something, this could easily happen, but it wouldn't be as fun, would it?
Place a few extra lines above your normal ones. When they are cut/listened to, they don't do anything. Even better, make the line turn away from your base as it gets close.
Another idea, is having two separate sets of channels. One could be the main one, but the other is used for warnings, rather than the top one. If the enemy stumbles on the top one from digging around, they'll listen to that/tear it up first and save the other line, even if you didn't know it got destroyed.
I'd also like to have a mutual agreement when it comes to servers: No one is to set fire to projects that are flammable (like towns/villages), flood the map, destroy trap mechanisms (only disabling aloud, i.e. removing a few pieces of wire, rather than the whole.
People who abide the rules will have more fun, as they have to use brain power to bypass systems, and use more intellect. Unfortunately, greifers will get a high from breaking the rules (I've watched my brother doing that).

Exactly! Notch is probably going to make limited distance ingame chat and you want to overcome this with an IRC or something, what is the fun or morallity in that? It completely ruins the idea of distanced chat. So us who agrees with the Redstone Telegraph systems found a legitimate way of overcoming the distance.
Now before you go on about the people who use hacks in Creative and agree with this and say something about being a hypocrite please remember that Creative is a SANDBOX, a sandbox with infinite of everything and no fall damage or anything, it also has hacks that are perfectly fine for some people. The anti-hack people stopped arguing about it and let us use it while they forget about it because it didn't matter to them, so if you want to not make long Redstone telegraphs don't use it and we will be fine with that. But don't use IRC or any other kind of messaging because if you get killed and say 'Bob! Get over here and kill this person who killed me!' or something like that it will conflict with us.

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.
Of all the possible alternatives for communication (especially those involving 3rd party programs), IRC is probably the dumbest one imaginable. With the amount of extra effort needed, you might as well use smoke signals (awesome in-game idea btw). If you have to relay a message like "Help, the base will be overrun in a matter of minutes" for example, you don't have the time to open up an IRC client and highlight all your friends warning them of the danger. You won't even know if they get the message or not, unless you sit there and wait for a response, and that's the last thing you would want to do in a situation like that. If you're going to suggest another method of communication (nevermind that it has no place in this thread), at least suggest something that is practical like any number of free VoIP programs.

Fortify and hide your communication lines, it won't be so easy for someone to find and break it.
But that's not the point. Creations like this is what makes Minecraft great, you don't have to participate so keep your negativity out of here.
