I'll start, i made a combination lock, this is what the guts look like when it's closed (right click the img and select View image to see the whole thing)
when it's open
what the player sees
You can switch what levers open the door pretty easily, and im thinking of remaking it because i did it kinda sloppily and i can probably make it a bit smaller, or i could make it bigger and add more levers.
I'm eager to see what other people have come up with.
too bad the tnt would fall into the water when its triggered.
edit: unless the pressure plate disapears when the tnt is triggered too? then that is pretty awsome

Matt, seriously, stop trolling. So can you please shut the **** up and go troll the infdev forums about how much you want to get 10 bucks from your hobo house?
Contraptions do things that you aren't around to do, such as releasing lava when a mob steps on a pressure gate. For that, you don't have to do anything, only set it up.
Logic gates are really just to open doors and stuff IMO.

Logic gates also require a lot of meta gaming whereas contraptions can be made with no knowledge of circuits
Essentially I was playing around with doors and found they block entry when they are opened. So I figured to invert the door so that when it's closed it's actually in the open position. Using the switch it actually turns the first door off and the second door on, creating a path. However, if you flip the "lock switch", the door is always powered and the outside level no longer works, however the inside door will work still. This method also prevents a thief from simply placing a torch in front of your door, because it's already powered. The only way in once locked would be destruction. Have fun with the design.

I'm not exactly sure if that's supposed to keep people from circumventing whatever lock you have, or what. I just put the door on the opposite side of the block it is barricading, go back around, put a block ontop, dig 2 pits on the side of the door and put water on top of the block. You can't put a lever anywhere where it can open the door. I'll post pics later, because it's really useful.

it might be worth noting that if tnt explodes in water, it still damages players but doesn't destroy surrounding blocks, keeping your base and trap in tact

Idea Simplified;
[] [] [] [] --> door placed facing this way and opens to the left
Now when you activate the door, the door closes the space in your wall. If you flip the lever on your side, the external lever wont open the door because the door is already "on". So now a thief could place a torch anywhere he wants and the door doesn't open. The idea can be applied to any door with any kind of external lock mechanism.
We have the same goal of negating torches. You are just denying them the build space. Assuming we build your house out of adminium and destruction is not possible. Couldn't someone just place a block where the water is or the source is and use it to torch your door open? Not trying to say my idea's better. I want to help solve the potential problem.

I use the automatic door one for the entrance to the lower mines. I also use an iron door with a button that can be pressed on both sides. The door opens, you run in, the door shuts behind you. This removes all chance of accidentally leaving a door open behind you.
Best pit trap ever, used in the dungeon I'm designing:
[>>-i>] Switch, Gravel, tnt, Player (duh), Red stuff
Note: Put the switch on top of a piece of stone, and have the ceiling at 2 units so people can't jump nor can they stand on the lever.
Player hits lever, entire floor falls out from under them. Also, place this in a room where they can't get out until they hit the lever, or there's a door that appears attached to the lever. More of an adventure-mode trap than anything, plus you can make the room dark and have to use a path.

Not trying to be a **** here, but... yeah, being a ****.
this is some kind of curprite trap:
1.TH(TNT on a Hole)
[]
2.THUH(TNT on a Hole and Upon a Hole)
[]
3.THUHS(TNT on a Hole and Uon a hole with Sand)
[]
4.TC(TNT at the Ceiling)
[]
5.TRK(Trap that Request Key)(its better to add a decoy at the end)
6.TD(Trap with Decoy)(better to add a sign to talk to players "goods in the chest ahead")(dont let players touch the chest before the trap)
7.TRKRL(Trap that Request Key and Release the Lava)(better to make the trap only one-way)
8.MLC(Many Levers to Choose)
(player's view)
that is all traps i remember.
logic gate =/= contraption
logic gates are toys, contraptions (or atleast my definition of contraption) are useful tools

Logic gates can be a component in contraptions.
"Logic gates can be a COMPONENT in contraptions."
Very interesting.
