I'm going to build a surrounding wall around my area, with one of the hardest material to work with. Obsidian, I don't expect this to be easy, or short and I know that it will be bloodcurdling frustrating. But simply because of my want to join the level of the great builders. I'm going to stick this through.
And with that, let me begin.
Current action: Working on my wall again
Goals to complete:
Obtain more buckets
Build outline of wall: Completed
Build up to unknown heights
Dimensions: No idea.
Day to day Diary of events.
Day 1: Plans made, Buckets gathered, lava collected, and Outline completed.
Screenshot:
End of day one.
Day 2: Layer 2, 3, and 4 completed, screenshot is on the bottom of page 1.
The best way I found, was to place a water stream running down your wall, and then dumping lava buckets directly onto the wall where you want to place them. Casting the wall like you have there Rares works too but it's a lot slower and can be messy.

Our Google which art in cyberspace,
Hallowed be thy domain.
Thy search to come,
Thy results be done..
I meant to have it as 25x25 square but it wouldn't fit over my whole Island. I would think the measurements are either 25 or 26 for each end wall and something like 40? blocks for the long parts, maybe 50.
I'll do the calculations later.

Yeah, that's how I'm going to do it, thought of actually mining the Obsidian by hand, but this way will save time and effort, also diamonds is slightly hard to mass gather.
You can actually just make an obsidian machine by using the lava that is touching he lava spring block and pour water on one of those.
Get a diamond pickaxe, then just start digging away at it.
Takes fifteen seconds per block, but you're better off doing that if you have a diamond pickaxe.
I used sand and wood to make a cast for my fortress, I just fill the cast up with lava and dump water on top. I've stopped working on it, as notch broke the minecarts, and there is no way I'm carrying that much lava by hand. Here's some pics of the fortress itself and my lava mine(right click open image in new tab, to see full picture):

Also, it's hard to make a cast when you're building a vertical wall, also my lava mine isn't really that well made out, since I have to do some jumping to make to the lava springs.

Time to work on layer 3.
I wouldn't cast for a wall either, I mainly do it so I can get a general idea of what it's going to look like, as you know undoing a mistake in obsidian is a pain and finding diamond is almost impossible.
I wonder how Notch is going to bring back cart function, and allow ridable minecarts as well. I can't imagine trying to carry all that lava to one spot in just my inventory and not with a minecart. Can't wait to see how this project fans out.

Day 3: Started on layer 5
Sand = Sand, a wall to almost pour and place the obsidian like concrete
Obsidian = Obsidian.
My only question is how could you do this from the bottom block up?

Working on the second layer as we speak.
Get a diamond pickaxe, then just start digging away at it.

Time to start on a new layer and a new lava spring because I just exhausted the last one.
