I reckon once he sorts the fog out it will be good. The only problem i have is the 256 height limit, seems a little low when we have all the room go out infinitely in other directions.
I noticed that after about forty-five minutes of walking away from the center, FPS begins to steadily drop until the game eventually crashes (heading off into the infinite void while spacing out to ambient music is incredibly relaxing). I assume because far away chunks aren't unloaded from memory and saved to disk yet.
Cool update, I found this cool moon shaped island, I thought, "This would make a cool base." I'm always hoping to see farther, it would be nice to see some landmarks like towers.
There's a lot more ocean in infinite. Know this makes me want boats. BOATS.
I'd like to see a little more variation in the maps. It was all just the same old thing the entire time I was walking along. I think the only unique thing I saw was a large lake. Anyone see any really large oceans or anything?
I think a 5600 depth would work, Big enough to harbor the floaty islands, have massive mountains, and hell.
But (if I got it right) the whole "column" must be loaded when in it. So it wouldn't work..
So we will see floating islands that touch the ground? That would be more trippy to see than the brick pyramids
By column he means every layer of blocks would have to be loaded at the same time, so if the map was 500 tiles deep you would have to load 128x128x500 all the time
I'm starting to warm to the infinite map idea but massive oceans = need for ships :smile.gif:
Oh yes, I've been thinking about that.
If he ever plans on adding enemies to the water (sharks etc) then at least small boats would be needed to travel around. I'd love to just have a small sail boat and island hop my way across an infinite world.
He should make movement procedural, with an "engine" block. If you press e next to it your commands get redirected to the engine. He should just implement a single hovercraft-esque set of vehicle physics because that is by far the easiest sort. That means to navigate upwards on land, you'll still have to "jump" with spacebar, but in return for being able to ride your own creations around, totally worth it. =P
**Speed should increase with number of engine blocks on the contiguous creation, and decrease with number of blocks total on it.**
My one complaint is definitely the sky limit. I'm a surface dweller, and by the average ground height, my cathedrals will be cramped. My mountaintop castles will be stubby.
One thing i will say. Notch needs to keep the obsidian borders, or add beacons and a GPS so we can find our stuff. I'm building around the boarders so i can find stuff.
huzzah! iv noticede some mountains have a huge sink hole in them. sometimes with entrances and exits to the outside world. what a perfect place to build a castle! :biggrin.gif:

The cake is NOT a lie!
I fell in love with it when I found a HUGE lake in the middle of my map.
Back in my day, sheep dropped brown mushrooms, and by golly we... Hated it, pretty much.
It changes people's minds!
This is truly awesome, and I thank Notch for giving a small morsel of a test.
Now if there are any that oppose, I dare you to walk and walk until you find a mountain. Or ocean. Look for this and weep.
