Diamond is kind of worthless as a tool because although it does last long, it's rarity makes it a bit of a waste to use it in tools. I just use stone tools as they're easy to make and the material is easy to find.
What do you plan on using the diamonds for then? Making diamond blocks for your base? Because... That's not a waste...
While I agree that having normally ornamental metals as better than actually practical ones does make sense from a gameplay sense, one must consider the alternative. If these things reflect their real-world analogue, then ornamental materials have no place in a world where utility is key and pretty things are buildings, not items. Not to mention gold and 'diamond' don't look terribly good in block form.
And yeah, I'm for much longer-lasting tools here.
Also, while Diamonds are hard in real life they are too rigid to be of practical use. Sure you can drill and scrape with 'em, but anything beyond scraping with a horizontal force would shatter the material. Hitting rock with a pick would shatter the pick before long. However, we accept it because diamonds hold a cultural image of hardness, and thus such a material in a game would make sense to have such a property.
However, gold is not know for tool working. It is known for being valuable and ornamental. I am not going to like seeing this used as something better than iron if that ever comes in.
Also, I will RAEG out if alloys like bronze is added and somebody questions why bronze is harder than iron.
I think the tool damage is pretty much perfect. You can dig out tons of iron with the lifespan of an iron pickaxe. Just make another one! And wood is renewable, so the sticks should be no problem.
Aside from that:
Using tools as weapons or weapons as tools drastically decreases their lifespan (watch out for that)

"I want to see forum posts saying "how do i kill dragon" with replies reading "lol"."
---> vede claimed Notch said this (and it is awesome).

I think we really need someway to repair tools because, it's really horrible just to have to carry a s*** load of picks just to mine one small cluster of ore.
LIFE METERS FOR RELATIVE ITEMS
Fists: Forever
Wood: Short
Iron/Silver/Steel: Long
Gold: Short
Diamond: Really Long
Rock: Medium
Flint and Tinder: Long
I love how Notch considered the actual strength of the items and not their value when putting in the stamina of each.
