I've tried every combination I can think of. If you can't make one, what is the use for the string?

You get string by killing monsters. You then combine the string with wooden rods to make a bow.

If you don't mind spoilers, on the minepedia page there is a full list of what can be crafted.

It can also be reversed.

Actually is uses those stick things.
