Well, I opened my old save file with the new update, and after mining a ton of gold and iron, I figured I'd smelt it. I headed back to my base, and prepared my forgery.
First, I saved. Then, I threw all of my 64 block chunks of ore in the hole, then lit a fire. The ingots appeared, and acted as if I was acquiring them, but when I checked my inventory, they weren't there.
So, I reloaded, and tried only one ore type, no avail. Then, one ore block at a time, and the same problem persists. Is anyone else getting this?
I hate to tell ya but I tested this after making a new game not from a past version save file. Anything and everything that is tossed into a fire is destroyed in a split second unless picked up before then.

1) Make sure there's an open slot in your inventory
2) Since Notch doesn't proof previous /indev/ versions with the new ones, it's possible your save game is....well, no longer fully-functional.

You get it from mobs now.
Also, Notch just fixed the flint thing today, something was screwed up earlier. Now you can get it from mobs.
