OP has good points, but as always, anyone who disagrees with any insanity going on gets jumped on. God forbid logic takes hold on the forums! THE TUBES, THEY ARE CLOGGED!
absolutely.
I agree with the OP. There are so many stability issues with the engine on windows based PCs that the game isn't remotely close to what most companies would consider beta.
I've had minecraft brick my computer so many time and had to look into so many work-arounds that it would make any consumer's head spin. Many basic things like monster visibility, basic net-code, etc are severely lacking at the moment.
I've done many beta tests before for both independent and mainstream companies. The sheer number of bugs in the current version of minecraft is worlds away from all the other games I've tested.
That's ok though: the game is still in its alpha stages. Perhaps the next patch will solve the vast number of stability issues.

I highly doubt it bricked your PC that many times, otherwise you'd be on your n+1th PC, where n is the number of times Minecraft has bricked it. It'd get expensive after a while.
Now you go develop a computer assisted cardiovascular application suite for tracking and controlling laser catheters and also to do real time analysis of vessel walls in a human heart as well as live volumetrics....and have it work right the first time. Then you may attempt to infer my lack of ability through not so subtle, useless quips.
I specified which definition of "armchair" I was using, and it's not the one that implies anything about your programming skills or experience, but hey if you want to keep acting butthurt about it to retain the illusion of some kind of moral high-ground in the argument even though you're the one going ad hominem, feel free.
You can also keep on pretending that designing medical software has remarkable similarities to programming an online video game with similar life-threatening consequences of failure.
I'm sure that argument sounds convincing inside your head.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

By bricked, I mean frozen up to the point where the only restart I could do is pull the plug. Not bricked as in my-computer-melted-and-is-now-an-expensive-paper-weight-bricked
MadCow, you lost the argument. At least try and be graceful about it.
Orite.
Notch actually does need the approval of random nobodies on the forum who think they're qualified to be his unpaid and unsolicited project consultants.
You're so right.

Maybe if you suck-up more you'll get a fancy title or volunteer job here. If the OP is a project manager...you are Notches Administrative Assistant.
You can't call someone an armchair {whatever}, and then redefine the term every single time your logic flaws are pointed out.
The OP made a statement about his opinion. Whoop-dee-doo. You're acting like Notches high school girlfriend. So somebody doesn't think its ready for beta. What is the point in you getting so bitchy about it?
Christ you're a crybaby. Just get over it already. The passive aggressive e-alpha male thing is old and boring.

...and anyone who wants to make a post about the current progress of game development needs the approval of you? Are you a total moron or do you not see the hypocrisy?
I didn't say he shouldn't post. I said Notch doesn't need his approval to proceed to Beta, actually in much the same way the OP doesn't need my approval to post.
Are you a total moron or do you just not understand what hypocrisy means?

From what I read here I see that you are trying to tell Markus(Notch) something about the bugs and what you think about it. The last place to try to get a message to him is on the forum here. Soon other posts will come up and will barge ahead of this one, leaving it buried back in the million posts. Also I liked that you used proper language here but that does not mean it can not be shortened into a few twitter posts to notch, or you can email to him if you wish. I am just saying that this is the last place to get a message to him, use a more direct way to contact him and have a nice discussion with him as you just proved in your first post you are clearly able to. Now I have to get away quickly from this post before I turn into a gentleman.
I am terribly sorry to double post but I find it quite odd that this post has sparked quite a commotion with the forum. It seems it has made people start to fight and I can not understand that with me being cynic.
(Yes that is a real word.)
id wanna see a use for eggs, milk, slime, etc before this hits beta. otherwise the whole first year of beta will be fixing that stuff to work right.
This is particularly funny to anyone else who played SWG (Star Wars Galaxies). When it was released, my profession (BE) had recipes requiring milk and eggs and crustacean, but none existed in the game. They weren't added as a drop for almost another year after release. So, for nearly a year after release, those recipes were completely impossible.
The budget of Sony Online Entertainment was enormous at the time, due to the unprecedented success of their previous game -- Everquest. They even had 8-10 staff online 24 hours a day to deal with customer issues. Yet, large portions of the game were incomplete when it released.
What you and the OP are expecting to be completed in alpha is unreasonable. By the end of beta, all the recipes may be changed completely, so making sure that every ingredient is used in a recipe for alpha would just be a waste of time.

Oh man, SWG. STILL good times with that game, even if it was bugged... then again, they proceeded to BREAK the thing completely with "upgrades"...
Anyhoo, I think we should all take a deep breath, a step back, and trust that Notch knows what he's doing. Sure, I'm one of those fortunate people that doesn't crash every 5 minutes... it's maybe every 30 for me. Regardless of what you call the stage of development, the Mojang gang isn't gonna let the game just sit with a bunch of bugs. They're fixing stuff all the time, making improvements, etc. I can't believe that everyone has forgotten about that.
Just because the word is changing from Alpha to Beta, doesn't mean that these crucial bugs aren't going to get squashed. Be patient!!
absolutely.

don't be such a grammar nazi. it's no big deal
notch said he would add cake if it wins the indiedb. those might be ingredients for it

Fail troll is failing.
What's the matter? Can't find any other threads to swoop in on and declare a winner after not participating in the discussion whatsoever?
Or are you just the OP's girlfriend?

Nope. I'm just better at taking my meds than you are apparently. Go listen to some Linkin Park and cry about it.
That's pretty clever. You pick that up from the other kids at lunch?
