I started a new world after downloading the Halloween update. I have been digging as I had in my older world, but there are MUCH fewer natural caves. Most of the time I burrow down to bedrock without a single natural cave, whereas in my old worlds, each each tunnel would yield at least one, if not two or three, natural caves on my way down. Has anyone else noticed a similar change?
You could try this wire-frame texture mod which lets you see through the ground and spot any cave systems in the area, all you do is place this zip file in your minecraft texturepacks directory and then select it from the title screen's Mods and Texture packs option. You can easily switch back to the default textures after checking it out.
The amount of caves varies based on where you are. Some areas have more caves. Some areas have almost none. This was true before the update and still is. You probably didn't notice it because of limited exploration or few saves.
