As some of you may have heard, I am definitely going to make a CTF mod for SMP. This is currently not possible, but Notch mentioned on Twitter that he was going to make the server moddable soon. So, I'm trying to come up with ideas--people got bored of classic CTF, so I need to make something new.
Game Structure
For each round, a new map will be generated (this could be done on infinite maps by moving the spawn somewhere new). Op block walls will be built automatically so the total area is 256x256. There will then be a 5-10(?) minute setup period for exploring and building defenses. After the game starts, the first team to get 5 captures wins.
PvP
There is no tagging, instead you have to kill the other person somehow. This can be done by TNT, rigging traps, or simply using some kind of weapon (arrows, swords, flint+steel).
Flags
There is no colored cloth in SMP. I might make a Diamond Team and a Gold Team, and the flags would be solid diamond/gold blocks. Capturing is done by taking the enemy flag back to your own flag, as always.
Inventory
Everyone starts out with diamond tools, and 2 stacks each of cobblestone, planks, and dirt. More resources could be mined as needed.
Good idea. I'd like to see an overall pvp game type where people could build defenses and then kill each other. SO a TDM game type or CTF would be really cool. Or a builders vs griefers siege mode. Where one team builds and the other team assaults their fortress trying to burn it down and destroy it.
What I'm implementing on my server is the following:
A 128x128 map is made with adminium blocks towering to the sky. The layers are as follows: adminium, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, grass. A spawn "temple" is made at each diagonal, and a sand divider is placed in the middle of the map. Trees are spread across the map. Players start with no tools at all and have exactly fifteen minutes to build defenses and gather resources.
The first team to:
- Burn down the opponent's flag.
- Collect 1 diamond, 1 gold block, and 1 iron block.
- Burn down the other team's forst.
wins the match.
As far as ideas to adapt to your mod, I say players don't start with diamond tools and must actually race to get tools to use.
Another idea: Classes! Each class would have a default different inventory.
Warrior - 1 diamond sword, 2 bows, 2 stacks of arrows. 3 flint and steels. Stone building tools.
Builder - Iron building tools and sword. 2 stacks each of cobblestone and planks. 32 coal, 32 logs.
Engineer - Stone building tools and sword. 2 stacks of iron bars. 16 diamonds. 8 crafting tables, 8 furnaces. 2 stacks of redstone dust, 32 redstone torches, 16 switches, 16 pressure plates, and 16 buttons. 16 pieces of TNT.
So if someone needed better tools, they would need to ask an engineer.
Some of the numbers may be a bit generous, I'm not too sure.
Classes might actually be neat. Think about it in a soccer match perspective:
The common style:
2 : 4 : 4
2 is builders, who start off with more building materials (and better ones), but have no weapons.
4 (first one) is for mid-field. they have bows and 2 stacks of arrows, and are like the defends of the base
the final 4 are offensive. they have iron armor, iron swords, 4 TNT, and their goal is to capture the flag.
An idea i had was to have these "bonus" boxes. they would be random blocks in mid-field, and when destroyed they would drop certain bonus items, such as maybe diamond tools, TNT, arrows, armor, etc. they would respawn on occasion, so control over the middle is important.
Perhaps every team would have a mob spawner. The mobs that spawn on each side will attack the enemy(Code:
(not very decent, because i know C# not java)
if block "mob spawner's ID(block ID)" = (on side of diamond team(126,126 - 0,0))
then mob_pathfind (diamond_team) = null
else (same thing for Gold team)
yeah, sorry for my fail attempt. However, if i work hard i can come up with better code(i hope).
I have studied it last year, so jacob_, if you want to i can try and help code the server. but only C#. i dont know java.
however i dont think 256x256 is a good size. maybe coding something like (Not trying this again):"if number of loaded areas(square format)> (the number fit for 256x256(or whatever size you choose)) then loading more squares = null.
idk, i just think it would help out with the lag that might occur.
and btw, this is papajizzme1(aka the guy that bugged you for centuries for getting his maps on the Classic CTF server)
EDIT:
2 things:
one: only fighter would be able to pick up fighter stuff. to prevent idiotism.
two: if premade maps will ever be applied, TNT canons are a must for each fort!
oo heres an idea. now with the haloween update, maybe players could vote on whether they play in a hell or in the, well, so to speak, "real world". that would be interesting!
I got tired of waiting for Notch to implement server modding, so I'm currently writing a CTF plugin for Hey0's mod. There should be a test version up soon after the Halloween update.
Games will run until a team gets 5 points, but I'm thinking about doing something different about map changes: the map will be changed once a week. This should encourage more advanced building, and since it is SMP, people will be less likely to grief or make 1x1 pillars. There will be no TNT, so the map won't be completely destroyed after one round.
I love you.
I think this will be the greatest thing minecraft has ever seen.
Also, about fire.
either make it so that fire can't spread more then X amount of blocks from the source, or make fire completely unavailable, because i can see major damage done with some flint&steel.
One more thing:
If you can get some mods onto the server, it will be even more epic. so like, the gotta ride em' all mod, that will be truly incredible, riding a pig, as you are pillaging the other team's fort. EPIC

4 kills - Care Package - Random Mob
5 kills - Pred Missile - Creeper
6 kills - Precision airstrike - Zombies
7 Kills - attack chopper - skellies
9 kills - pavelow - more skellies :tongue.gif:
11 kills - Ac-130 - Slimes. muahaha

instead of sand and powder, maybe it can be all powder? coz it is VERY powerful.
Then wouldn't be overpowered then? More people would be blowing up then getting flags and building.
