Why not be able to put a lock on your chest so a Thief or greifer Cant get in
To make a lock it would be something simple like
[] [] []

[]
And i allows you to set a code in, maybe a 3-4 digit Code to put in,
Thoughts?
no, no, no.
what we need is a whole new type of chest. lockable chest.
it would be made like a chest, but with iron in the middle.
a digit-based code system would too easily be brute forced.
it would have to be an alphanumeric-type code, such as a password.
No, even better than that. in the menu for the chest, have an option button that allows you to specify names of users who are able to open the chest. by default, your name would be the only one in the list.
that way, if you want multiple people to be able to use the chest, you don't risk the password or code being leaked, and other people finding it out.
This is the most effective and most secure way possible, in my opinion.
Edit: The users list could be similar to the sign input dialog. perhaps have up to 5 users or something who can open said chest?
Why not just have keys? Like a keybelt, if you die you lose the key and someone else can pick it up. If you lose the key you can still open it by breaking it since you made it. If someone else opens the chest then they can break it and make it theirs.

This idea makes sense to me!
I don't want to have to memorize codes is why :tongue.gif:
Though, I think having locks would ruin some of the fun, because there wouldn't be any point me making an awesome defense system for my secret treasures...which would also be true for others, so there'd be no thrill from trying to get past another's defenses...

Just to go further with the key idea, i wrote the first post on my cellphone
I think Keys would be a neat way to do it. you could open the chest if you have the key or the creator of the chest (by destroying the chest)
If you die you drop the key (it might be a good idea to make keys not take up inventory) someone else can pick up the key and figure out what it opens. If they open the chest they become the owner.
If you drop the key but are still the owner, you can break the chest open and make a new chest/key
Im just playing around with the idea and im sure someone else could help expand on the idea.
Using a passcode would just suck every single time you needed to open the chest.
What stops people from breaking the lock or the chest? If they're unbreakable by anyone who didn't place it, they could be abused in the form of walls. :s

You think it's easy to brute force 10,000 combinations? Most people use predictable passwords anyway.

I don't understand why people are smoking out this idea, I'm not that big a fan of WoW, but can you guys at least give reasons as to why you are opposed to this?
10,000 is easy if you use a program, but blocking bots like that isn't really hard. 1 second delay between guesses should work nicely, although I'm no expert at hacking.

There's an obvious fix to locked chests being used abused for walls...
Only allow each player to have one locked chest!
Now I have to put all of my highly valuable items in one slot. Everything else is easily stealable. :|
Although a limit of 5 or 10 might work. I'm unsure of how many chest people 'need'.
I honestly don't see how you could have more than twice the inventory worth of valuable stuff...that's just me though. (Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I mean a double sized chest)
But I guess it can't hurt to go with a higher number, anyways, the point is if you put a limit on the amount people can build they won't be able to abuse the stuff.
How hard would it be to make it simply "You make chest => Only you can open it, but theres a command to add permissions for others to be able to open it."
Then just make chests unbreakable by people who don't have perms, problem solved.
Do you understand the amount of data required to store even a 4 digit code and keep it updated by the server? Each number is generally 64 bits, at 4 digits thatd be 8 bytes o0of data per chest constantly being updated.
HTML signs that are just read and not checked took long enough, do you realize how much work it'd take to create dynamic 4 double arrays that do not ping their values and are not locally cached to prevent hacking? Anything less is pointless as 5 seconds of cache surfing would give any half decent hacker the value, all they would need is the x/y/z pos of the block.
Finally, toss in the fact that chests combine together to form a double chest and become a single unit and suddenly
things get REALLY complicated. You then would need to take into account if the player has already attached a code to a chest and then links it to make it a double chest, does it maintain the password?
If it didn't a person could just stick a second chest beside it and the password would be reset, etc etc. It sounds simple in principle but numeric passwords are much harder to implement and safeguard than you think.
On the other hand, just assigning a "this person can open it" system like a mini whitelist is faaaarrrr easyier. I'm sure theres a few coders who could implement it on server softwares honestly.
If I had any idea how to code in javascript I'd do it myself, sadly however, its one of the few languages I have taken the time to learn >.<

Why? That idea is ****ing ace.
The lock should also make the chest unbreakable to anyone except the owner.

This.
10,000 by hand is not so easy.
