Well to help add some griefer-protection on a server, I was thinking maybe a global ban list would be help full..
Like when a griefer comes in your server, you post his/her IP to the public list so other servers can ban them. (Maybe with screenshots of them spawning pig spanwers or tnt)
Little kid who bought admin on the server i play on tells me i hack (In minecraft it would be grief), bans me, posts my IP on such list --> Banned from alot of servers for no reason...

Herobrine does not exist. He is not in the code anywhere, there is not a faintest mention of a mob like this. Herobrine does not exist. All encounters are hoaxed and are clearly hoaxed. Some are good hoaxes, but still fake.
Global Ban lists are NOT allowed, and should be a ban-able offense to make one.
Ban lists are completely unfair. If there were Global Ban lists, I probably would be banned from most servers, because when my brother owned my Minecraft account ( He got bored of the game and gave it to me ) he was a really destructive griefer. There were around 16 servers that I was banned from when I got the account, and I had to go to each one to explain my case to the admin/mods.
If there was a Global Ban list, I would have been banned from much, much more than 16 servers, and it would not have been my fault.

could mod the ban.txt into a url link to a txt, and can also make it so that 3 people have to approve of this ip to the list and make the list optional for protection.
Let's say that I have this player come in my server. OKay so my initial encounter follows up a greif/hack scenario. I would post on this hypothetical poll explaining what this person did, followed by a IP. If 2 more people came in and griped with a matching IP, then this would be added to the list.
JabJabJab's idea sounds pretty cool, like if the same IP get's reported 3 times for griefing from different sources, it gets banned (well that's what I got from it)
SprunkBuster reminds me of PunkBuster in Quake 3 which I guess is pretty much the same idea
as others have said, global ban lists are not allowed. They are nothing but trouble.
The rules state under the "DON'T" section "Post ban lists - This can lead to innocent people being banned from the servers."
Whatever my opinions for the matter are aside, this thread is not a list of people to ban, it's talking about the possibility of implementing a global ban list on servers, I'm guessing uploaded to some central server. The point is, no ban list will be posted in this thread so it's totally legit.
But the thing is, ScarFace, leaving it to anyone but the devs to add/remove names from the list leaves it open to be abused.
And I don't think Notch should be expected to spend time roaming each server to hunt griefers.
Say I run a large, respectable server, and you disagreed with me, and I'm a douchebag.
BOOM you're banned from every server.
That would be me capable of abusing it, just 'cause people think I'm honest.

which is exactly why I didn't lock it? I'm not talking about the thread, I'm talking about ban lists ;\
On my first server, I was banned because someone named PirateBobbbie was griefing. When the mod was asking for his name, everyone said "Bobbie" and I was banned 2 sec later. The griefer left the server before they noticed the griefing. If there was a global ban list, I could never play again, and that just because of a mistake of a mod.
The only way I would -ever- even remotely consider supporting any kind of global ban list is if was temporary in nature.
(Meaning you only got banned for at most a day.) Even then I'd be highly skeptical of it and probably only use it as a reference in case I did have a problem person. (You wouldn't be banned for being on the list, you would be banned for causing problems AND being on the list.)
Anything else is just another tool for griefing.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
Er, Why not just have a thread, where people can post griefers along with evidence, and then other server owners CAN ban them if they wish. A bit like InterPol, But more minecrafty. :biggrin.gif:
From what I understand, that sort of list was exactly why we have a no blacklist rule now. It started out with good intentions and turned into a list that people just copied to their server configs. (Cause lets face it, most folks are too lazy to read the entire thread and make their own judgments. They see "banlist" and a name and that's all the further their brain goes.)

What if some admin, for absolutely no reason, bans you and adds you to the list? And the other 2 admins who must approve are little kids and just ask what they did wrong, and the admin who banned first would say "he was hacking, griefing, crashing the server, and trolling."
And ryansoper, did you even read the first few replies?
Quit getting your panties in a twist about griefing. If its that horrible to you just splay single player (or just ban the person!). if you don't want sand in your ***** don't go to the beach.

Someone's a tad strong in their use of anti-feminine derogatory metaphors today.
Aa-and sigged.
I agree with the general sentiment here though; a global ban list would probably be abused (and not necessarily intentionally either.) I think it would cause more trouble to legit players that got incorrectly banlisted than it would be worth. In my experience, news about griefers spreads fast enough by word-of-mouth (word-of-chat?) to be potentially dangerous to constructive players. I think a global banlist might exacerbate that problem.

Stop. Global ban lists are a bad idea. For every 1 real griefer they defend against ten innocent people are being banned. If you see a griefer on your server ban him. Don't run to the forums and tell everyone just ban him. if he keeps it up eventually everyone will have banned him. Then no innocent people get hurt. Ban lists are just bad idea.

I dunno, it works well on source games.

Actually it happened on your server. Maybe was it you who banned me by mistake?

every other server i go on they are on and griefing cause no admins are on/were there and griefing and admins were on and kicked them
but no, this is a bad idea.
