So i downloaded the server stuff, opened the correct port for both types, and have my IP ready too.
I can get the server to run, says its all good, and I can connect to it, if I leave the IP field blank in the properties file, however my friend can not join my server using my IP (the one you get from whatismyip.com and stuff).
Not sure why, everything looks good to go. When I try to join using my ip it doesnt work either. only if I leave the server field blank.

But I have forwarded my port. I have it set to my ip, I even tried a range instead of JUST that port, I have it set for BOTH as well.
I have many other ports forwarded for other games like borderlands and such and they work fine, I know how to open my ports. So there must be some other issue here. Is it maybe because the servers are down from notch? I doubt that has any bearing on me running my own server for the game though.

If it has failed to bind to the port it means there's already an application using it. check to make sure there aren't any processes running in the background such as java.exe and javaw.exe before running the server again. If there are, close them. : )
However, if it is not saying "failed to bind to port" you're having a problem external of the application itself! So it's either a portforwarding or firewall issue.
Well i shouldnt say this but I dont use my firewall, lol so thats no issue, and I have DMZ'd my router too. So its not that either.
it only said failed to bind to port when I enter an IP in the config file for the server. If I leave it blank the server runs, but no one outside can connect using my IP.
Ive checked the applications running in the background and no other instance of it is running. I restarted the comp and made sure it wasnt set to run on boot just in case using MSconfig as well just to make sure it wasnt in the background.
Sorry if it was a confusing title. I put "failed to bind to port" originally because I thought you HAD to put your ip in the server_ip field in the config file, and after i made that post I found out you didnt.
So yea, no ip = I can get in my game but anyone else gets "cannot connect" or disconnected or something.

yes, i have the exact same issue. i dont know much about running a server, etc, but i would really like to be able to play with a friend of mine in our own world. i've made the exceptions to windows firewall, and he still cant connect, though now it tells him "java.net no route to host", whereas before he couldnt connect at all
hopefuly somebody has an answer
yes, i've learned that as well, but without it my friend just gets told no route to host. i've forewarded the port through my router and windows firewall, and i have nothing else blocking it. i've tried another port, and that didnt work either. so to sum it up, i have it running port 25565, and have opened it in the router and the firewall. i do not have the ip in the properties(but would love to know why its there if im not supposed to fill it out). my friend put in my wan, with or without ":25565" tacked on the end, and is told "java.net no route to host"
my java should also be up to date since i had to download and install it just to play the game.
I have this problem too! SO all this is is a shameless bump, but still... if removing it doesn't work for external, then no-one can run a vanilla server...
EDIT: I've found it! I'm using the wrong IP! You have to cmd.exe then ipconfig, because the IP you get from 'what's my IP' is WRONG! Use the one your computer dictates instead!

This entire thread just gave me a goddamn headache.
Well, I ceratinly don't seem to have one of those... wait...
FFFFFFFFFFFF
But it's still different than that one, right?
EDIT: Man, I don't know how to find my external IP, but I remember doing all this before to open up a classic server that worked... I think I'll take a look at that.
EDIT 2: I just remembered all I had to do was type in a URL for those , it was the port forwarding that was hard... no luck there...

Setup Sticky: "LEAVE THE IP BLANK, unless you want to put your local IP so it only works in your LAN.
It should work just fine, no idea about the no route in thing.

HOW COULD WE HAVE BEEN SO BLIND?
type "ipconfig"
use your internal to forward your ports.
