I -know- my ports are forwarded correctly. People can "connect" I see their names in the server; then they wait and about 60 second later (they they are told they are connecting) they time out with:
This is -just- in survival MP. I downloaded the creative versions and people could connect, through the "external url" just fine. So I know it is the software.
I'm not angry, sure a little frustrated. One friend of mine showed me the joys of mine-craft yesterday. Since then I have influenced 6 other purchases. Simple graphics? No matter, we are ALL looking forward to the -real- Survival MP where we can build massive fortresses and defend against the zombie onslaught. I just hope the server software if fixed soon.
I suppose I will keep my ear to the ground. YES, I have seen others with this issue, but few have "tested" it from all angles. I show up on canyouseeme.org, all relevant ports are punched through; and again friends and strangers allike can connect with the Creative Multiplayer Software. Just have to wait for this to be fixed.
I see this is in Alpha, I have been a Quality Assurance Tester before; just lemme know how I can help out and when it is fixed.
Sorry for the ramblings. I just awoke.
EDIT: Another tidbit I forgot to mention was that this -same- error effects people outside my LAN as well as inside. Yes, I know that insiders need to use my local IP. Same error.
I've set online-mode, and verify-names to "false"; this time just to see if they were getting caught up in the authentication. I -have- had them set to true.
I know the default port has nothing to do with it. My port is punched through from the "CanYouSeeMe", and I used that port when testing Creative mode.
((Another tidbit I forgot to mention was that this -same- error effects people outside my LAN as well as inside. Yes, I know that insiders need to use my local IP. Same error.))
Alright, used the simpler settings. Did an inside and outside test, and got the same results. So, by now, I am betting it's bugs in the software.
From the servers point of view they "Log in" and then... Lose Connection...

So I know they are getting through, hell I see their name in the player list, and in the world I can see them right in front of me. From their machine, they just see a dirt screen that says "Logging In" after about 60-solid seconds they time out.
The obvious strategy to try first is to start with a purely stock server. Make a new Minecraft directory and run a server out of that. Find out if that works. Then and only then should you start changing any settings at all or playing with mods.
I used a Jar server for "Creative Mode" and it worked a few days ago. It also generated an external URL and my friends and I played in the browser. Same port 4815. Too bad none of us care for this game mode.
For Survival mode I -have- been using the .exe, as I was not aware there was a jar server for it.
This fact, that I got one to work, and not the other is why I am sure it is not my router; coupled with the fact that I am used to setting up servers for other games. I am in the DMZ, I have ports forwarded ect...
Yes I am connecting locally. I did during the "Creative" test as well. Additionally, I will reiterate. They are connecting; I see their screen names, thus I see they are validating with the online mode, and are passed to me in which they... time out.
No wireless is involved.
I am going to reinstall the .exe tomorrow and see if that helps. :|
Alright. I nuked my old server folder. DLed the .exe, and set it up. Went into my router, and since so many people are saying to use the default port (though I know that's not the isse); I changed it back.
Had an insider and outsider test it today. Both got the same old error. At this junction there is nothing to reiterate. The issue has not changed. I am in the DMZ, have the port forwarded, and passed a check at "canyouseeme.org".
This has to be a software issue, as I would expect local users to be able to connect with no problem.
I suppose, the test for me would be, to set up a server of something else on the same port and see if people get through. If so, I -know- it's not my hardware. But at this point I am fairly certain it is not anyway.
No tom that thread is an issue with people who have already connected to servers having issues staying connected. This is server runners having issues being able to have people connect at all.
They might be related issues but they aren't the same problem.
I am getting this error as well now.. Only, I get some people who can connect using my external IP, and others who get this error. It only started happening after the latest server update. I am assuming that it is a software problem at this rate, but since it happens to some and not others on my server it could be a problem with the people connecting??

A friend of mine is also having this problem (or very similar sounding), when connecting to my server, but it's ONLY him, everyone else connects just fine.
ONCE in a while, it actually works for him, and he can connect, but most of the time no luck.
From what I see in my log file, he has that Java same error:
"2010-09-23 22:52:56 [INFO] lost connection: Internal exception: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset by peer: socket write error"
And from within the server it looks like he Connects once, then Disconnects TWICE.
But again, it's only him.
So I wonder if this is a Java issue on his end, or something else with his system?

Tell your friend to do this:
Click the following
Start Button -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters
Right Click the Atheros Card -> Properties -> Advanced
Select Transmit Buffers, and change the value from 256 to 512.
***Select Each of the things with "Checksum Offload" and disable them.
Click Okay
Run Minecraft
I am having this same issue as well. I was able to get the server working last night on my XP SP3 box at home, but cannot get it working on my brand new Win 7 pro x64 box at my office. Tried re-installing, re-downloading, also tried connecting from an outside and an inside connection... no luck either way. It has to be a software issue, i've tried everything and nothing solves it. Sigh.
Here is my server log:
