Ok, my client updated and I can't connect. I am guessing we need another server client update?
:smile.gif:
Edit:
Ok, from what I am reading, this update completely broke the ability to play the game SMP. Major bugs, the inability to use anti-grief tools for the mods, people dying as they spawn into the game.
Looks like minecraft may not be an option over Thanksgiving break. :smile.gif:
Elme, I would suggest while we wait for something playable, perhaps we could save the current server map and start a new one while everything is up in the air. Without anti-grief tools it would be like a post nuclear mutant fest would be my thoughts. At least on a fresh map it wouldn't matter so much. Then when this is fixed we could put the current map back on? Just a thought.
Also: Rules for PvP. I like the idea of PvP, but we need some sort of rules about it or else we get insanity on the server. I think no PvP at spawn is a good start. What more should we have? PvP by permission only meaning you have to get the other persons agreement whenever you want to try PvP? Maybe have PvP start at a certain distance from spawn so that it you are out in the wilderness you are exposed, but closer in you are protected by law enforcement? Maybe just wild west style where you are open to PvP everywhere and we ban people who abuse it?
Thoughts all?
By the way - I have 15 vault spaces open at the moment to protect your inventory... :smile.gif:
IIRC corwyn, wasnt PvP something you had to enable in options?
however reading newest tmblr post it seems to be enabled by default...
Yeah, that is what I read as well. :smile.gif: The main issue though is that the new server update doesn't allow to use of the mod anit-grief tools until those tools are updated as well. Meaning - free range for all griefers to go nuts.
Maybe another alternative is to backup the map, let us go nuts on it until the server and Mod tools are updated, then replace the map with the preupdated version if things went too far crazy during the open period?

I like your second idea here better here then your previous one of starting a new map. That way some of us can continue what we're doing, yet if it goes too far and things get out of hand with griefers we can restore it from the backup.
Although.... Didn't the last time something like this happened, Elme waited until the mod tools were updated before bringing the server back up?
Regarding PvP, my idea would be to disable it, and wait until there's a stable, good plugin made that does what we want PvP to do (keep it to a certain area or do some sort of challenge/agreement thing).
If I could just make a suggestion, I think that we should keep the new map. Everyone seems to be having a great time, would suck to have to go back to an older map. I havn't been on this server much (still new to it), but im just hoping for this new map to stay. A new start for this new update would be pretty reasonable.

Theres a few problems with that.
1. The map is all griefed with lava and water everywhere.
2. The map is getting big way too fast, which means, that after a while, it will start lagging.
3. Theres a lot of people who have played way longer on the old map, than you can even do in this map before the next patch is released. It would be too bad for them to start all over again.
I intended to just wait for hey0, but as some suggested I made a new map till hey0 is updated. I want to go back, since this is just a map we got till I get my anti-grief plugins back.
My personal opinion on this is that we should maintain two maps.
One, the 'griefer's map', which is what we currently have up - complete with holes from creepers and trunkless trees everywhere.
Two, the 'main map', which is what we've been building on with the plugins in place.
Whenever the server software is updated, use the griefer's map to start with until the plugins get updated, at which point the server switches to the main map. That way, every time there's a server update there's a brief window when the stuff in the griefer's map can be built up, and we can see if the current update breaks things horribly.
I am amazed at the level of development we are getting even with the bugs an the insane creeper bombardment. Cool job everyone, keep up the good work!
I have found (probably with about a million other people) a cure for the perma bugged can't get hurt, can't pick things up bug. Relog over and over until you die. This bug seems to happen (to me at least) anytime you die with an inventory screen open.
Yes surprisling people are working with each other to get stuff done even pass all the griefers, bugs and ofcorse Creepers... Everyone gets what is needed done.. the Teamwork, Development, and Hospitality is epic
See ya in game...
The creepers are relentless lately. Every time you turn around there are 3 or 20 in the area. If the creepers don't get you, the griefers definitely will.

Well since it is survival, you immediately start winning when you're not dying. Simple I guess
From these posts I don't know where the server is at. Is the griefer map still up? Are the plugins fixed? Are hostiile mobs gonna' be enabled, making for more survival than building? And finally, are we keeping this 'new map?'

Griefer map is still up, plug-ins are not repaired. Damage is enabled and the creeper onslaught is relentless. It's an easy day if you come up from your mine and only find 5-6 creepers lurking around outside. The map is hit from time to time with griefers, but we stop them when we find them. This is still an amazing and tight knit community, and people are eager to help each other build, mine, explore, repair damage and give needed items. Cities are going up in two or three places right now, with Corwyn's looking really awesome. Even though this is just the griefer map, playing here is just as awesome as always. If you read this before logging on, watch the spawn point. It gets hit pretty much constantly and you'll usually end up in the water.

The Great Walled City - or 1/4 of it. It is big so it doesn't all fit in a ss. :smile.gif: Want to move in? Let me know!

Is that .... is that glowstone?
Someone's been -cheating-!
For shame, Corwyn! :wink.gif:
Lol! You caught me. Although the cheating I took part in was only mining it where other people had placed it on my structures then reconstituting the dust back to blocks. We have been a bit more relaxed in our rules while we wait for things to work again. Given the structures we are able to build and maintain, I am thinking we could probably run the actual map again if we wanted to at this point. The invisibility bug is probably the most annoying thing to deal with when it comes to griefers, but it is manageable with mods on.
What is different though is that the game requires a completely different kind of building than it did when mobs were off. If we put our old map on at this point it would quickly look like a war zone with creeper craters everywhere! Lol. I am not opposed to this, just thinking about it.
I think something we have to consider though at this point is it doesn't look like things are going to get more fixed than they currently are anytime soon. What I am seeing, and maybe I am wrong or missing something, is that our more long term players have stopped dropping by as much. My feeling is that they are waiting on building and playing because they aren't sure what will stick around and what will be discarded in the near future. To get rid of that uncertainty I would suggest we make some sort of choice about maps and go with it as the "unless some new bug breaks the world again" choice.
Options I see:
1) Go back to the old map and just let it ride. Creeper insanity, invisible griefers, etc. We deal with it like we always have. We never had a white list, we always just kicked and banned the naughty folks - we can continue to do so. I have been fairly successful at locating invisible griefers and kicking them when they were being idiots. We also have the logs that log invisible griefing the same way that it logs visible griefers. I would suggest an additional rule for the board of "No invisible play - be visible at all times or kick" to help combat this sort of issue. Since VIP's can kick, and the rejoining after being kicked makes people visible, this should be easy to enforce as well.
2) Keep the new map as the new permanent map. I had a ton structures and some fairly intricate stuff on the old map, but I could live with the new one. I am building a ton of stuff on the new map already, including a huge walled off city with defensive towers, major areas of flat, buildable land, etc. The one thing that worries me as I build is the thought that this might all disappear in the near future.
3) Can we merge maps? I know we want to keep the map below a certain size to minimize lag, but would we lag in a double sized map? I have seen this done on other servers but I don't know what is involved or how much of a hassle it is.
Overall, playing with the update to SMP is making me realize that the game has fundamentally changed. Building like we did on the old map may not be feasible with how the game is now. So, kind of like when SMP appeared and differentiated itself from Creative mode, I think we need to decided if we want to run with the safer older version or the more challenging new version.
Honestly, it doesn't matter to me any way we do it. I am so addicted to this game that I'll play any version we come up to. :smile.gif: And, as always, all of this depends on what our Supreme Commander and MineCraft Server Czar Elme the Great would like to do with the server. :smile.gif: Please don't take anything I wrote as saying that I feel like what you are doing is wrong Elme! I love the server and have really appreciated the chance to play here. :smile.gif:
Thoughts? Ideas? Discuriging remarks? :smile.gif: Can you tell I am a college professor? Why do we like to write so freakin' much!?!

I think the creepers dropped in for a visit. They leveled spawn after I went through all the effort to rebuild it all in grass plains... Pfft.
