back to the topic.
if you look even closer at the portal screen i think you can see that the dark line under the liquid is a shadow on bloodystone and not
Nope lol, it's clearly and obviously Obsidian UNDER the portal too. Not just a shadow.
Zoom in and brighten the image a little, and you can see the edge of the Obsidian texture.
Definitely not bloody-cobble.
So yeah, you'll need a 4x5 fully surrounded frame of Obsidian, to make a portal
touche! i thought that was the smoke from the fire. i took it into photoshop and tweaked the brightness/contrast and it does appear to be blocks. damn. looks like maybe 4 x 4 x 4. sheesh that's large.
i have to think they will be fairly common in hell. i mean, there's plenty of them in that screenshot so unless there's a way to BAIT them, it seems like they will be attracted to portals.
Am I assuming correctly, that you can change the size and shape of the portal, as long as it is completely encircled?
So you could make portals sized like this:
I believe he will has stated that it doesn't work that way yet, on his twitter (I may be remembering wrong).
But he did say that he liked the idea, so he may implement it.
Honestly, I'm sure the new Ghasts will be fun and challenging, and I'm glad to have a block-destroyer, but I'm kinda disappointed. I thought they'd be a more cerebral weeping angel/boo/scp-173 type enemy, which would make hell insanely creepy. Also thought we'd be able to get into hell earlier in the game: having to dig to obsidian, find diamond, and gather 10 obsidian (or is it 14? do we have to make the bottom of the frame?) in order to get there is a bit of a chore. Still, at least it means a whole new section of gameplay available for "higher levels", which is good.
In other words: Still very excited about the update, but a tiny bit let down.
You can get Obsidian in less than hour right after starting a new game. Seriously, it's not that hard.
I never said it was "hard", I said it was a bit of a chore. Digging obsidian takes forever and isn't particularly entertaining (three and a half full minutes of sitting holding a mouse button down to get 14 obsidian). Finding diamond to carve it with is random, so while easy sometimes, for some it may take days of play. Will be less annoying if Notch was kidding when he said we have to go to Hell for lanterns, or if torches last a very long time. Getting those things is going to be additionally difficult because now, while hunting for lava and diamond, we need even more light to keep spawns down.
Game breaking? No. Update ruining? No. Just not what I hoped for.
My biggest letdown, though, is that I think the ghast is way less interesting than what some of us were picturing. Like I said: still excited, but not as much. It's still going to be awesome.
And Enjay: yep, I feel pretty sheepish. I really thought Notch was indicating a weeping angel kinda monster. /sigh
Looks like MrTorus and I were right about the 16:1 ratio.
The ghast is *terrifying*. I wonder if their fireballs are as potent as a creeper blast in rearranging the environment?
I see a lot of people assuming that the ever-burning hellstone will be used to make lanterns. But I have to wonder - if you've got an everburning block, why not just place it and set it on fire? Where's the value-added to making it into a lantern? Fire is already as bright as sunlight.
I guess you'd be able to walk past it, like a torch, and have no risk of setting yourself on fire. Still. I'd rather see lanterns be craftable with less... strenuous... materials.

And I bet he'll make all the important blocks take forever to mine too lol. Getting those gold blocks or glow blocks while everything is being set on fire around you...

Try pictureing a plate loaded with tacos.
While this may not help you understand, it may help you desire to eat tacos.
I'm pretty sure dungeons will have natural portals in them already, and we might even be able to uncover them naturally as well. The article does mention other "nearby" portals.
As for the brimstone: I'm willing to bet that it breaks up like clay does, and that it is impossible to place an ever-burning unmined version.
The glowing rock in hell is very intriguing. Perhaps that can actually be placed?
I'm really interested to know if Notch made the biome transitions more realistic, with grasslands being able to contain forests, mountains and streams separating different elevations. I don't think he did, though. The hot/dry stuff is disheartening.

pretty sure based on....???
or is this just the conclusion youve reached based off what makes sense to you?
I'm basing it off of the article suggesting that there will already be portals in hell besides the ones you make, that he "isn't telling" what portals and dungeons have to do with eachother, and the fact that Hell is based on the ways. Seems pretty likely that dungeons will at least have a chance to spawn them, making brimstone less hard to come by than people are claiming. Find a dungeon and start making lanterns!
Yeah, what I'm wondering, can any mob go through a portal, either by intent or by being manipulated by the player. If they can just wander through (any type of mob) is it a good idea to have a portal in your main base? Wouldn't be fun to have anything just appear through the portal.
If only you can go through, or a mob can only go through when forced, then that would be more conducive to just building them everywhere.
More thoughts.... if the area of the portal exit is blocked, like the iris in the Stargate TV show, does it just bounce you back? Might be a way to block the portal (doors, or just plain cobble) so no one (or mob) can use it but you.
Multiple portals stacked next to each other, one in your base, two in hell, so close that you step from one to the other, then another in the surface world where you appear someplace else.
Horizontal portals has been mentioned, now that opens a whole slew of possibilites......

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.

Smaller and angrier Ghasts.
MINECRAFT FACTS: BIG LIST OF WHAT NOTCH HAS ACTUALLY SAID ABOUT THE PLANNED FEATURES OF MINECRAFT
Yes, they multiply like Slimes.
I would quit if that was the case...

If it works like this, i'm gonna build a stargate-like portal hehe
I'd like to thank all the cacodemon references for getting Doom sound effects stuck in my head....

I've gotta start planning my portal room
Randomly placed obsidian cave leading up to portal anyone? :biggrin.gif:
How was it that you make an obsidian farm? I gotta look that up
