ok im not making a lantern out of more material than a chest that make 0 sense why not just one material and a hell material that way they are hard to get ie you must go to hell but once you can get to hell you can mass produce them something like this.
The materials need to be rare enough to make torches still very important. Can't cover the whole world in permanent light anymore? Have to actually use some decision making and rationing? Good. Have to relight torches thru passageways, think on your feet a bit more, use a little caution, maybe use an extra bag slot or two for food and weapons? Excellent. Making players a little less safe is a very good idea.
Just think for a second. When you are exploring a new cave network for the first time and establishing torches you don't really feel that scared or at a great risk. You have to be slightly more cautious, listen for enemies and be prepared, but is is not painful or a burden. Now think about how traveling thru that same passageway every time after your initial setup feels. You can't. You don't have a feeling associated with that travel. You have nothing to worry about, no positional decision making, you can just numbly wander thru. That is kinda sad to me.
I welcome the change with open arms. I really hope I never feel like I can craft enough lanterns to cover every inch of my mines. The flint and steel reingighting system is great. I really hope lanterns are not a replacement for infinite torches. Decision making, rationing, caution, being alert at all times, deciding how much bag space you can spare to feel comfortable. These are all brilliant changes that will brighten my world in the ever increasing darkness.
I was watching Tolhe play Minecraft on his LP YouTube thing, and suddenly he came a cross a straight-down drop in a cave system. It got me thinking....
Howz about Torches affected by Gravity? Like you chuck a torch down a dark drop to see how deep it is? Makes sense in my mind...
Possible feedback?
But then the torch would only start burning when it is on the ground. Which still is quite weird because what are the chances a torch would fall straight down and land perfectly on its base?
And being 'on' while it falls won't work for the stated reason that dynamic lighting makes you sick :tongue.gif:
I'm fine with Dynamic Lighting, but I see your point. D=
This man is a genius, you should all listen to him.
It's no coincidence that fishing and lanterns are being added at the same time.
I'm thinking something like....
[] []
Where is the wool you get from sheep (a wick)
and is FISH OIL from FISH, which you get from FISHING.
That's actually a LOT of cobblestone and glass, so maybe that combo will make 4 or 8, but I'm thinking it's going to require fish oil and possibly a wick. Or maybe it'll require more than that, but make 16 or something. Numbers are just a numbers game.
(Actually, you have to build a bucket, dig a hole and fill it with oil which you get from squeezing 16 fish, then push and trap a sheep on top of the oil, and then box it into a box with glass and cobblestone, then set the sheep on fire with flint and steel. And THAT'S your lantern.)
Everyone is assuming Iron, but an explanation like this seems the most likely. He wants constant light to be hard to find, and as such needs something less common than Coal but more common than Iron. Something like fish oil and wool would be a pretty good solution. sheep and wool are certainly more common than iron, while being limited in how often you could harvest it. It would also make mobs more useful than they have been in the past.
Everyone also thinks that it will be some item you can only get in Hell, but from what I've seen hell in Minecraft isn't really a place you want to do a lot of resource harvesting. Making mining in that environment a requirement to set up permanent light sources would be brutal.
needing glass and iron would make exploring Much slower.
suppose your low on iron, or you have an unfortunate spot.
I just don't want to be running down 300 feet of monster infested confusion, so that I can maybe find a few pockets of steel, so that I might be able to add the slightest bit of light.
I'm all for lanterns, but if the lifetime on torches is too short, or the lanterns too expensive, it would be frustrating to no end.
I agree ^ I think that it is really gonna suck having to replace torches all the time. I use them as land marks and stuff so if they dissapear then it will be really hard to find my way around. Plus what about when you first start and you cant get materials like iron? Then you would have to use all your "Valuable" Wood and coal (this is early on remember) to continue replacing torches in your home. I could see this as a possibility for the hardest difficulty but not early on. Also if torches do end up staying the same in lower difficulties I think that laterns need to have a wide area of effect (and possibly later on stain the outside glass for different colors? )
1. We don't know the recipe for torches (despite the 5 dozen proposed in this thread alone)
2. We don't know how long torches will last
Given those unknowns, i find it hard to make any judgement on whether it will be bad, or even see how someone could make a judgement like that. I get that what we have now is a semi-creative mode and i'd like that to stay, but the mode IS named survival and people should, you know, have to work to survive. The current setup should be transferred into a new Creative mode.

What use is an ear that does not hear, or a mouth that does not speak?
Seems to me like everyone's freaking out about torches prematurely. If it means that much to you, use INVedit. I also suspect that the real reason for the panic is everyone thinks they'll last only 10, 15, 20 minutes. I agree, that would be absurd. However, I suspect the actual lifetime will be more like 1hour +/-10 or 5 minutes. That's 2.5 to 3.5 Minecraft days, and you can just refresh torches by taking the old one down and putting a new one up. They would clog inventory space (torches won't relight on being picked up, sillies!), but if you need 2000 torches to light a small house before you have any iron, you may have a bit of a problem anyway.

[Notch] Such a beautiful day! Good thing that I'm not deep underground in a semi-lit cave...

I hope lanterns don't burn out, and that you can turn them off / on with redstone and the accompanying levers and pressure plates. I was hoping of having some sort of way to light a path ahead of me as I go by using pressure plates connected to my lanterns placed on the walls via redstone.
i think one of the new ingredients will be in hell that makes it hard enough to find that it isn't apparent but once you get to hell you can mass produce like this.
[] [] []

yeah I think this is probably likely IF the ingredient actually comes from hell, also you know as well as I do that if its not a 4x4 recipe there will be people on the forums to post their discontent about "so now I have to build a workbench to have unlimited light WTF?" (I am not nor will ever be one of these people), as lame as that sounds it might already be up here somewhere, but its bound to happen.
I've got to say, I'm loving this idea of oil for fuel (:Yellow:) and extracting oil from fish. Finding oil in hell makes sense too, be it drops from monsters there or an uncommon feature of the landscape. Or maybe extract it from a new pyrophoric block...
Where represents a stack 64 stone blocks (heated and processed cobblestone blocks)
and represents a stack of 64 torches, and have this combination produce 1 lantern, than:
any comination having anything to do with , , or for a perminent light source.
Edit:
I bet some smart will come along and say that's too easy, it has to be iron because it's the one resource we know you wont have any to spare. (Not kidding, after having used none of it at all, and having mined more than 25 7*7*6 sections out of my mine I've only found 35 peices of iron.).
For iron-base, think about you mining / creating large castle in new world, how much lantern do you need to keep your epic light up? how many iron do you need? or you will dig your world like an ant nest for massive iron? (add some need-to-lit-again touch during mining too)
Harder difficulty may be good for current survival mode, but I think this is not something harder, but more annoy instead.
Instead of using hell material for just a lantern. I think about using common but harder recipe for lantern like....
[] [] []
[] []
[]
yield 2 or 3 lantern
and use the hell material for the "larger radius" (may be double in light radius) permanent light resource recipe, it may be a new block type (can't walk pass unlike touch).
realistically, wouldn't oil be under the sea , so it would be kwl to have an oil rig
In our reality nowadays, yes, but that's just because when oil became valuable the land-based sources (those reasonably close to surface, anyway) were the first discovered and drained. The land in Minecraft is untouched, though, so you could have deposits of raw oil very close to the surface.
Heck, at the turn of the last century, the primary source of oil was pools of it on the surface. It wasn't until we used those up that we even had to start digging -- obviously the surface pools were a tiny, tiny fraction of total oil that only served because demand was low, but still it would be possible to find in an untouched landscape ala Minecraft. It'd be like Iron: Possible but rare at sea level.
=hell material

Also, if lanterns are heard to make, that would most certainly break the game. Leave challenge to self-limitation; I just want to build things.
Something about blocks.

prehaps make them heavy on plank use.
along the lines of:

I think notch shouldn't have told us that all torches will turn into lanterns after the update.

the iron ore is just iron ingots
this would be expensive and realistic
even better would be inventing oil
