Peri;
Thanks, just hope this thread doesn't go off topic.
Here are my thoughts
If we are getting time-limited torches then:
1. Base it on difficulty (only enable on hard mode)
or..
2. Make it a global on/off option to enable the time limit of torches.
Alternately;
Leave torches unlimited, but make placing torch require a flint lighter (Steel or a new one based on Stone), each time you place a torch your lighter durability goes down. Steel > Stone. (Placed torches would auto-use your lighter, if you have no lighter, you can't place a torch.)
The only issue is flint needs to be a bit more readily available to make your first lighter, but that shouldn't be an issue..
I think the best option would be to make it a global on/off option. That way people who don't want the hassle of having to relight torches wouldn't have to, but people who liked the extra challenge could enable it.

If you go by the scientific standard of fun, then you will see that other people don't dictate your enjoyment. You do. D:
realistically, wouldn't oil be under the sea , so it would be kwl to have an oil rig
You are aware that under the sea isn't the only place oil is found - right?
Please tell me you know that - before I lose all my faith in the IQ of the Minecraft community
You're entirely correct! They're also found inside of whales!
The halloween update is going to bring in whaling!
What is with everyone suggesting lantern crafting schematics that require iron? That is just a horrible idea. How many lanterns is it going to take to light a really large home? No how much iron is that going to require. Iron is used for everything important. Why require 1-3 iron just to make a permanent light source? IMO all the lantern should require is stone, coal, and maybe glass.
No no no. That is all wrong. It should be like this:
You are probably saying "but that is too large!" Well Notch will create a new crafting workbench just to increase the requirements for lanterns, which are made by the following way:
IMO lanterns be slightly challenging to build, but they should be fairly easy once you find the needed resources.
Notch should make clay more common in the map-generating process, so the lanterns chould look like this

It's no coincidence that fishing and lanterns are being added at the same time.
I'm thinking something like....

Where is the wool you get from sheep (a wick)
and is FISH OIL from FISH, which you get from FISHING.
That's actually a LOT of cobblestone and glass, so maybe that combo will make 4 or 8, but I'm thinking it's going to require fish oil and possibly a wick. Or maybe it'll require more than that, but make 16 or something. Numbers are just a numbers game.
(Actually, you have to build a bucket, dig a hole and fill it with oil which you get from squeezing 16 fish, then push and trap a sheep on top of the oil, and then box it into a box with glass and cobblestone, then set the sheep on fire with flint and steel. And THAT'S your lantern.)

this has been discussed over and over and the reason it has not been done is notch has trouble in the current version of making a moving light source look right.
It's kind of weird, cause you'd think it'd be as simple as updating the 15 block radius sphere around you with appropriate light values. Maybe he's not satisfied with snapping light values to blocks and wants it to look smooth or something.
Everyone who says wood can make a lantern....have you ever mistakenly made a fireplace and forgot that one block of wood that was above it and set your entire house on fire? wood burns. Who has made a lantern out of wood (shaped it right and made it permanently waterproof) that you know of?
What happens when you need a quick 3 or 4 blocks smelted? I dunno about you, but I use planks or maybe sticks if I'm desperate. Wood is a horrible idea for a lantern. It burns.
Honestly, I like the idea of having a flint and steel to light ANY torch, unless you can strike your torch against a wall (ahh, strike anywhere matches), but that would make the game entirely too difficult for the first night. 10 minutes to find an iron deposit, coal, wood smelt the iron deposits into iron ingots and then craft those into flint and steel? Ugh. bad idea.
Relights, now that would be nifty. 2 seperate ID's, spent torches and new torches. spent torches need to be relit with flint and steel. new torches get the first light for free and could last one (or maybe two nights). I agree that torches should have a longevity depending on the difficulty of the game. Peaceful: Infinite, Easy: 2 nights? Medium: 1 night? Hard: 1/2 a night?
Lanterns should use steel. Different catalysts can be included to give the light directionality or different degrees of brightness (or total surface area brightness increase). Diamond and gold (especially) can be used for this. A hell material can also be used (and should be) for lanterns.
The basic lantern, giving 4 lanterns:

= Hell material
The brighter lantern, covering more surface area:

Again, = Hell Material
The directional lantern. Put it against a wall and it'll shine down a long hallway or something (also to be used as a "flashlight" once Notch is able to fix the lighting issues in Alpha
[] []
[] []
Again, = Hell Material.
I would also like to see coloured glass be introduced at some point after this lantern update. Different coloured glass = different coloured light. This is where fishing could come in. Different coloured fish give different coloured fish oil. Extract the fish oil from your red fish to get red fish oil, combine that with glass to get red glass, put red glass in place of clear glass on a lantern and get red light out of your lantern.
