Most of the names make sense, but... brimstone? Like, sulfur? Why does it glow then? Also, so much for avoiding religious references
Brimstone is just an alternate name for Sulfur. The fact that the term has been used in various religious texts and contexts does not make it religious.

Well, I'm not christian at all and still the name it was given brings that to mind immediately. Don't forget it's found in a place which was originally called Hell. Anyway, I'm more bothered by the fact that sulfur glows than by the biblical reference, every religion is the same to me.
Anyway, something weird happened when I came back from the Nether: I had placed the portal at the end of a 2x3 tunnel to keep ghasts from appearing in the overworld, and when I came back the portal was in a completely different place, I'm lost in an unknown cave system now. Has this happened to anyone else?

Yup, happened to me also. VERY frustrating... I had to dig to the surface at an angle. Ended up a very long distance from my original portal but thankfully within 200+ blocks of surface home.
ps. I cannot argue that certain words cause religious meanings to be inferred, as you said. Same goes for me, honestly. This particular case is due to a combination of history, etymology and culture, however, and has nothing to do with the original name.

I too found myself in a completely unknown place when re-entering the earth world. I did not recognize anything in any direction (was on top of a large hill) and resolved myself to die in the nether world in order to respawn. After respawning, I saw that the portal was still in the original place I had made it. Sounds like a bug to me.
I agree, and a very frustrating one at that. Some people report that they are able to return to the same portal 100% of the time, and it has been suggested that if the portal you attempted to place would lie on lava it is relocated to a "safe" place - and it is here that the "bug" creeps in. Because of the distance you are landed in Nether from where you *should* have landed, your return portal sends you back from where it is currently located - usually quite some distance from where you thought you would be.
While I agree that it is a bug, it is possible Notch intended this. We will have to see.

Whoa, looks like Notch has to clean up things a bit. At least the cave I appeared in has a lot of iron, to replace the pickaxe I'm gonna break while digging to the surface (I busted the stone one while experimenting with bloodstone and brimstone). I won't dig at an angle, I found that digging a spiral stair in a 2x2 hole is more space-efficient, and it'll help me mark the location of the new portal when I get out, so I can compare it to the original one. It does have some of the risk of digging straight up when you're carving it from the inside of the Earth, though. I'll probably emerge at the bottom of a lake.
Random thoughts: with the huge lava lakes in the Nether, I doubt we'll ever run out of obsidian sources. When I get out, I'm making myself an obsidian castle. With a looong entrance carpeted with bloodstone, and brimstone lighting in the ceiling.
I created a portal into the Nether and upon returning to the area have found 3 additional portals in the normal realm. All take me to the same Nether portal. Also I haven't found any pumpkins yet, is there a trick to that?

I haven't found any either. I read somewhere that they spawn on grass, near sand and water.
i grew my map size from 0,0 to 13,7mb and got 13 pumpkins (one got destroyed because near fire [i like to mark my way by setting trees alite]), just go explore

Damn, looks like they're even more rare than clay. I didn't actually look for them anyway, I was busy getting a base set and getting materials for my trip to the Nether.
Edit: talking about materials and rarity, has Notch modified the resource distribution? I've gotten more iron in a single day as a side-effect of my trip to the Nether, than I had in an entire week of my previous world. Or am I just that lucky?
The only thing from this update I like is biomes and fish.
Is it Halloween only or permanent? My game won't update anyways so there is no need to worry for me.
Well, after all the work Notch put into it and how expected it was, probably all of this update's changes will be permanent. Notch did say that if he disliked some feature, he would remove it, so we're at his mercy.
Also, another bug for this update: floating, disconnected leaves don't die anymore.
Grab a shovel and knock em down. 'Swhat I always did when I couldn't wait for the leaves to naturally drop the saplings.
As I always end up with surplus saplings when I go logging, I just leave the leaves (no pun intended) to die on their own. I don't like the idea of wasting my tools' durability on such a trifle, so now I'll just burn them down. After separating them from the rest of the forest, of course.

Interesting... I wonder if you can leave the corners out while preserving the portal shape and still have it work.

Sounds evil-icous! Good point on the spiral stair also.

1. There're now sunsets & sunrise, you can see the sky turning red-ish. It's quite beautiful, really.
2. You can now look at your character from the front, press F5 to go into 3rd person view, and then hold F1 and pan around.
Yes, sunrise/set is a nice addition indeed. However, the F5 thing was already included in previous versions
