i know that more than 1`000`000 people will think:what a retard!
but think of it,if lanterns are made out of nether`s material,NO ONE with a new profile can play minecraft, because you need a diamond pick to mine the obsidian to get to the nether, but if torches turn out, theres around no probabilities to get deep enough to get to diamond, and also who the hell with lanterns would use torches?!
it would be the same as changing the torch graphics.
so,this is why i think torches are a misteke, but not a fail, they can be easily repaired, like, meking them out of regular world`s stuff,or making them both infinite,so they would adapt to your resource flow,if you cant find coal,or you are running out of it,you could start using lanterns.
that is right, but lava isn`t very common, tough you can see it in mountains, but it`s not common at all, also, think of it,you need iron,a lot,to colect water and enough lava, iron is found on caves, wich couldn`s be mined easily while going against time.
Torches will still be easy as pie to make. New profiles can't play? OH GOD NO I DON'T HAVE AN INFINITE LIGHT SOURCE RIGHT AS I START OUT!!!! MINECRAFT IS NO LONGER PLAYABLE!!!!!
Just take more torches with you on mining trips. And portals can sometimes pop out of nowhere, Who knows you might spawn next to a portal.

It's not spam, dude, this is just how I talk
Dude! That's totally math! We should hang out sometime and slay evil and junk!
My football team is the Russian bears on unicycles.
Nobody said anything about traveling to Nether to make a lantern. For all we know, it could still use coal.
Last minute edit: Also, Notch said torches could be relit with the flint lighter.

When asked about materials needed to make the lantern on Twitter, Notch replied something like "You may need to go into 'hell'"

Try my mod Sparcs Tweaks Better dungeon loot, bones in dirt, Witch hut loot, ect
The mistake is that it makes no sense for us to have to build a magic portal to some mythical realm of evil and horror and fire and malice just to craft... lanterns.
It's like flying to the Moon for a cup of sugar.

In the beginning, Notch created the Nether and the Earth, and in it he made a man of sand and called him Steve. Notch made Steve strong so that he may punch wood, and lo, Steve was to have dominion over all square things.

A cup of sugar that never runs out, tho.
How amazing :/

I should let this die... walk away... never look back, and let the troll/silly just die away....
****. I can't. I can't leave without throwing in my opinion.
Oh god I am so ashamed.
Torches, right now, are an infinite protection against mobs.
I'm going to pull two cards here:
the "Harder rather than too easy" quote
and the "Oh noes, survival is added to survival? RAGEQUIT!".
Look, people ***** and whine and moan about not having reason to go to hell the Slip Nether, and then, when one is (completley theoretically) posed, they freak out becasue it makes the game more of a challenge.
It's a perfectly valid idea. How many games give you infinite ammo?
I mean, that's your main defence againse the enemies.
In CraftMine, your main defense is light. Combat is there, but it is utilitarian, used for resource gathering and last-resort situations. It's not a main feature, and it's not your main defence. And lets face it, it's far too easy and avoidable.
Having infinite light takes away a lot of the difficulty. Even with the new increased spawns, I can light a trail in the middle of wherever, walk along, and not be troubled by any more than a stray zombie.
Picture that with non-infinite torches:
You're trekking along back home, carrying a loadout of ore. The sun is dropping low in the sky, and soon the only light will be the sparsely-placed torches alongside your path.
You're not far from home base, when to your horror, you discover a section of your torches has gone out. With the sun setting, the only options you have are brave the possibly mob-infested unlit path, or take shelter back at the mine.
No?
It gives you a REASON to progress to the Nether. It adds realism, is going to be OPTIONAL (probably) and it's going to balance the game.
It's amazing how some people think sticking a bunch of coal to a stick will magically make a burning, everlasting torch.
Yeah, because people totally think that's how it works in the real world.
Zombies. Walking skeletons. Portals to alternate dimensions.
Torches that don't burn out are not exactly on the high end of the super magical amazing suspension of disbelief spectrum here.
the "Harder rather than too easy" quote
and the "Oh noes, survival is added to survival? RAGEQUIT!".
There's a difference between a challenge and a chore. There's a reason video games don't make you take out the trash or mow lawns. Challenges are great. Chores are just an irritating waste of time that takes one away from the actual gameplay.
Look, people ***** and whine and moan about not having reason to go to hell the Slip Nether, and then, when one is (completley theoretically) posed, they freak out becasue it makes the game more of a challenge.
I don't have a problem with lanterns being difficult to craft. I just think it's silly to have to build a magic portal to some epic mythical realm just to gather the material to craft something as mundane as lanterns. Will we then have to craft a space ship and travel to Mars to be able to gather the material to craft a bigger backpack? Will we have to perform pagan seances to summon the spirits to materialize us a rocking chair?

STUFF THAT I DON"T WANT TO SORT THROUGH TO QUOTE FROM BUT AT THE SAME TIME I WANT TO ACKNOWLEGE THE FACT THAT I AM RESPONDIND TO HIM
I love the way you picked out two of the things I said, and only two.
I stated why I do not think it is a chore. Firstly, it adds a challenge that is missing.
Second, though I didn't say this before, its not known how long they last. If they last for a in-game week, then we won't have a huge problem. If they're randomized within a day of that, they don't all go out at once, allowing you to casually relight them as you stroll past.
It's a limiter. If you want to build massive structures, play creative, or better yet, turn the option off.
As I said, it's probably going to be optional. Notch isn't blind or deaf, he knows things. And even if he has a silly stroke, then we can mod it. Not really acceptable, but it will be fixable, and thus not worth whining so LOUDLY about.
I wouldn't be happy if he forgot an option button, but it's fixable, and I wouldn't rage.
Also, nothin in the real world burns forever. Call me a reality-quibbler, but going to the nether for infi-light makes perfect sense to me. And if the game is balanced right (timewise), then it's more than okay.
TL;DFR: If there's an optional button, we're okay. If not, we can mod one in.
Also I love your metaphors (though they might be some other linguistic technique) but they're exagerated and not relevant. There's a logical limit, and they pass it. This issue sits on the borderline, giggling and pooping, however.

Yeah, I didn't even read all of it. I just skimmed it and quoted two things that caught my attention, just like I'm about to do here.

Like I said, there's a difference between a challenge and a chore. There's a reason games don't make you take out the trash or mow the lawn. It's because they're boring. Time consuming and arduous is not the same as a fun challenge.

How about we just not add elements to the gameplay that amount to mundane chores that take one away from the actual fun of the game?
Also I love your metaphors (though they might be some other linguistic technique) but they're exagerated and not relevant. There's a logical limit, and they pass it.
Exaggerated, yes. That's how comedy works. That's a device used to amplify a point.
Irrelevant? Well, they're metaphors, so by definition they're relevant to the subjects involved.

In the beginning, Notch created the Nether and the Earth, and in it he made a man of sand and called him Steve. Notch made Steve strong so that he may punch wood, and lo, Steve was to have dominion over all square things.
Why add it? Because it adds an ellement of danger, survival, and risk. And becasuse a lot of people, such as me, do kinda want it, even if only to test and reject it.
Notch could easily please both if it's an already planned update by having an on/off switch.
It's not something I'd cajole him into though.
Simply because some people do want, and some do not want, it should be added as an optional feature. It can get community-tested (or ignored by some) instead of being a theoreticaly-based argument.
I do agree that with huge, huge areas, it WOULD be a chore, but that's what the OFF button is for. It's about suiting as many types of gameplay, not picking sides.
Also I can't shake the feeling that you're really just nudging me off into the Troll River (that's trademarked, you grubby-handed urchins).
It's all just a matter of how long they last before they go out, honestly.
And since none of us don't really know how long that will be, discussing it is pretty pointless don't you think?
Notch knows what he's doing. If something sucks, he'll remove it. The system works!
Hooray!
No, shut it. I hate the whiners as much as everyone else, but for the love of god, stop being so superior.
I'm giving an effort to contribute like a rational person. Please don't post stuff like this, even if it's a poor attempt at humour.

Yes, pretty much. Though as I stated, make it optional so EVERYONE is happy.
We shou;d be making suggestions about how to customize it, nor arguing over whether or not it's a good idea. Enough people like it to make that a moot point, and enough dislike it to warrant making it optional.
Why add it? Because it adds an ellement of danger, survival, and risk.
You know what would also add danger, survival and risk to the game? If your buildings began to fall apart after a couple days and you had to keep rebuilding them so that monsters didn't get in. That would add plenty of danger, survival and risk to the game, and be so much fun to have to deal with.
I do agree that with huge, huge areas, it WOULD be a chore, but that's what the OFF button is for.
Yes. The entirely hypothetical off button.
I'm glad that you see how much of an annoying chore it will be, though, however fleetingly you might admit it.

It's the high end of the temporary magical stuff to make the game playable until a proper method of lighting is in place.

...it's not magic. Torches that don't die are not supposed to be magic. Nor is it particularly amazing that a torch in a video game does not die. Flying monsters, that's magic. Eh, no. The enemies are easily defeated; it adds no such thing to the game. It just adds a new chore.
Because they only spawn where you want them to spawn right now, that's why he's changing it...
Actually, I find that it's very easy to misjudge whether or not an area is lighting secured. Plus, if you did the work necessary to secure your buildings and mines, I don't see any good reason why that should be taken away from you. If you want danger, walk outside.

You make a mold with dirt or whatever, put lava in then water, repeat till you're finished.
Granted, I love the unlimited light torches hand out, but.. If it became a effort to get that.. It will add that much more the the game.
