Stand still adn they cant hit you. I left the PC for an hour and came back with full health, they always miss. I came back to a destroyed area around me, i had to suicide to get out cause I couldnt build a bridge and kill them at the same time.

definitely not true
what is true, is that ghasts normally aim at a point a bit behind/over you, but, if they are on the same height as you, it results in a square hit. it also makes running away way more dangerous than running towards them.
My tip for building fancy stuff in the nether out in the open: practice hitting the fireballs, thats your best bet for surviving when building a bridge, and theres not many ghast around. If there are more than 3 or so firing at you at any time, wait it out, or do it like i did from time to time and just bring one pickaxe and a stack of stone, to minimize losses, and try to evade. You will die quite often that way though.
It is quite risky but do it. Im making a CITY right now in the Nether.
Just use things Ghasts cant break such as; Diamond, Gold, Iron, Obsidian, Cobblestone, Rock, and there are a few others but i forgot them at the moment.

"More fun than a barrel of monkeys." Has anyone ever stopped to think how cranky, if not downright vicious, a barrelful of monkeys would be, especially once released from the barrel? -Tom Shales
But I'm proving those ghasts wrong. Oooh yes. They are very wrong, for that base is a pride obliterating ***** slap to the face.
